trips - Ice Age Trail - Jerry Lake SegmentTrip Info
DescriptionFall colors hike for 2010... WAAAAY OUT THERE! Yes, I know... but good planning starts early. This is a rip-off of a prior trip plan I pulled together for 2006. I generally hike this segment going from north to south but this time I think I will hike it from south to north. The terrain is fairly easy and flat with a few easy hills. * Friday: Drive to Jerry Lake via Forest Road 571 and park in parking lot at Jerry Lake. If we get a shuttle car we can park it at Forest Road 102 at the hunters parking area. Hike North to camp site at Yellow River. This is a great camp site but you will have to cross the Yellow River to get to it. (3 miles) * Saturday: Hike Jerry Lake segment to Chippewa Lobe camp site. This is an even better camp site. (10.1 miles) * Sunday: Return-hike to car at Jerry Lake. Alternately if we get more than one car we can shuttle back to Jerry Lake after a few miles of hiking. (13.1 miles with no shuttle, 4.3 with shuttle) This is a 5 hour drive from the Chicagoland area to the trailhead. Sunset is at 8:20 PM and twilight ends at 10:06 pm. Full moon on the 13th. Conditions will probably be very muddy on the south branch of the Chippewa Lobe. I recommend gaiters for this section of the trail. Also the Yellow River might be higher than usual, but it's not a difficult ford if we can't cross on the stones. Parts of the trail come to the edge of a marsh. It can be buggy. I generally treat my clothes with permethrin and wear deet. For more details on hike see my photos from my trip in June 2005: http://www.thebackpacker.com/pictures/album/8t5t5vn3.php ![]() ... MAP IS NOT FOR NAVIGATION PURPOSES ... ;)
