Description

NOTE: I will be unable to attend this trip due to my son is running in the Nashville marathon on Saturday.

The Tennessee Gorge segment of the “Cumberland Trail” and the surrounding Prentice Cooper State Forest area is thirty-nine miles of beautiful trail with striking overlooks. We will begin at the Signal Point trailhead, and end at the Prentice Cooper WMA trailhead.

*****
If you can join me Thursday night (4/27): I will get off work that afternoon, and will drive to the entrance of Prentice Cooper SF (off Hwy 27) and overnight at the checkpoint station (because it’s a 3-4 hour drive, and can’t predict my arrival time due to a multitude of factors) just as you enter the WMA.

NOTE: There is a bathroom outbuilding, and a hand water pump, but the quality of water is questionable due to iron (Fe) content.

*****
If you drive in Friday (4/28) morning: Meet at the Prentice Cooper trailhead so we contact the local police for authorization, and we will shuttle everyone to the Signal Mountain trail head. We will hike the “front country” to Poplar Spring CS (approx 9 miles). It is difficult, if not impossible, to hike the entire “front country” segment in one day because the trail crosses several rock fields.

In the “front country” segment, the trail follows bluff tops and ridges 1,800 and 2,000 ft. above sea level, drops into ravines lush with hemlocks towering over tangled growths of laurel and rhododendron, and crosses Middle, Julia, and Suck creeks. The view from Edwards Point covers a long stretch of the "Grand Canyon of the Tennessee," with historic Williams Island below on the left and the city of Chattanooga in the background.

After Edwards Point, the trail follows the tops of the bluffs some 2.5 miles with beautiful views of the Suck Creek gorge, then drops down to a campsite on North Suck Creek. At this point the trail continues across a 225-ft. swinging bridge over North Suck Creek to Tenn. 27.

NOTE: If you do not call the police (423-886-2124) for authorization, your vehicle will be impounded if left after 10pm.

*****
Saturday (4/29): Hike “back country loop” trail (approx 14 miles), and overnight at McNabb Gulf CS. This leg consists of approximately 30 miles of two loops in Prentice Cooper State Forest. Pot Point Loop Trail overlooks the Tennessee River canyon at many points, and Mullins Cove Loop includes spectacular views of Mullins Cove in the canyon.

NOTE: If you drive in Saturday morning: You can meet us at the Indian Rockhouse, or anywhere along our route to McNabb Gulf CS.

*****
Sunday 4/30: Continuing along “back country loop” trail, hike to Prentice Cooper trailhead (approx 9 miles). Once we get back to Prentice Cooper trailhead, one person can shuttle owner of shuttle car back to his/her vehicle.

Contact me (731.415.7315) if you need directions or have any questions regarding the trip.
