DescriptionThere are several high knobs on Roaring Plains: Haystack Knob 4,555 Green Knob 4,600+ Noname Knob 4,600+ Mt Porte Crayon 4,770 There are maps on Jonathan Jessup's Photo Page: http://www.jonathanjessup.com/roaring-plains/roaring-plains-map-large.jpg The general plan would be to meet at South Prong trail head on Thursday 9/18. From there it's about 3-4 miles along the South Prong Trail and out to the Long Run Holler(Canyon) Rim Trail. Long Run Holler is about one mile wide and three miles long and 2,000 feet deep. This is one of West Virginia's most remote places and quite something to see. We would follow the Rim Trail a few miles to a site about one mile across the holler from Haystack Knob. The site is at about 4,600 feet at a place where the Roaring Plains Trail comes very close to the edge of the plateau. The first day's hike is about seven miles. We could spend one night at the foot of Haystack Knob and nab all four knobs before heading back either by way of the Rim Trail or the easier and less scenic Roaring Plains Trial.
