trips - SW Black Hills and PlainsTrip Info
DescriptionPeople need to be prepared for HOT weather on this trip. The canyon willl NOT have water, so you'll need to backpack it in. Other sites may or may not have water. Also, boots and gaiters are recommended due to both potential for walking through grasses and, more importantly, running into prairie rattlers. >8-O Seriously. Hey, it is the "West," after all. ;-) Still formulating the itinerary... but will include: --Canyon north of Edgemont, SD that features rock art and rock scrambling. Backpack into canyon and stay there at least one night. Possibilities beyond that: * A trip into Thunder Basin National Grasslands in eastern Wyoming. * A stop at the former Igloo munitions depot (a quick stop and a right crazy area!) * A trip south to Fort Robinson (Crawford, NE) to enjoy the park and its many options AND/OR Soldier Creek Wilderness there. (of course with a stop at Warbonnet battle site at Montrose enroute) * Wind Cave National Park - Hot Springs SD * Custer State Park - Custer, SD * Fairburn Agate Beds and adjoining French Creek campground (not much of a creek there) - in the boonies. * Something in the Badlands National Park or adjoining lands (some under consideration as wilderness areas) - Wall/Interior, SD (and some greaty Indian fry bread tacos!) Expect at least one night in the "wild" - perhaps more! Otherwise base camping and day hikes. I would like to keep travel from becoming just crazy (aka, a more "relaxing" trip once in general area), so look for itinerary to get whittled down further. :-) Let me know if interested! There are two people on this so far and a third interested, who would be carpooling with me if attending. I would want to limit number to around six or so.
