trips - A hike to the Waterfall WonderlandTrip Info
DescriptionI will be leading a bushwhack hike to the waterfall wonderland of SGL 13. Saturday, August 8, 2009. Meet at the parking area outside of Jamison City by 9 am. This is a long dayhike, not a backpack. Approx. mileage is 10-13 miles. This is a very difficult hike. You should be fit and experienced. No trail for the most part. Countless stream crossings and walking in the water. Terrain is difficult and possibly dangerous. Very slippery in places. Be prepared for nettle and brush/blowdowns over the plateau. Imagine Ricketts Glen without a trail, bridges, or steps. I generally go up Heberly Run and down Sullivan Branch. Heberly has three main falls; Quinn Run has many smaller falls. The descent of Sullivan Run is taxing. Roughly 10 falls/cascades. We will check out the slot chasm on Ore Run. It is possible to climb down the falls if the water isn't high. The rock has good traction. Impressive Sullivan Falls is the last and marks the end of the bushwhack. Lots of incredible backcountry swimming holes. Take all safety precautions and equipment, including headlamp. Who knows, we might get lost. Hiking poles are strongly recommended. Bring extra footwear and leave in the car. Your feet will get soaked. I don't mean to scare people away, but this is not an easy hike. Come and explore one of PA's best kept secrets.
