trips - White Mountains in Summer 2010Trip Info
DescriptionDates are approximate and tentative. I plan on taking approximately 25 days to hike all of the AT In New Hampshire and a little over 100 miles in Maine. In my opinion, this is the best chunk of the entire trail. Typical days will be about 8-12 miles, with a "zero" day in Gorham. The emphasis of the trip will be taking my time and soaking in all the scenic views, so to that end I intend to take lots of sidetrips, especially in the "Prezzies". I'm not staying in any of the AMC Huts. If anyone wants to go with me, contact me so we can work out shuttle details. tentative plan for new hampshire section: sunday, 7-4 im going to start in west hartford, vt and hike into hanover and hang out there for awhile, then on to velvet rocks shelter about a mile or so northbound of town. we can make arrangements to meet in either west hartford, hanover, or just find each other at the shelter thursday, 7-8 i will hike into glencliff and hitch a ride into warren to re-supply. then i will either stay at the hostel in glencliff, or hike into jeffers brook shelter about a mile outside of town friday, 7-9 i will be at beaver brook shelter about a mile and a half from kinsman notch. if this is where you are ending your hike with me, you can stay here friday night and hike out saturday morn, or finish friday night. from hanover to here is 5 days. that would make a nice hike. youd get nice views from mt cube and mt moosilauke sunday, 7-11 i will be at liberty spring tentsite, about 2 and a half miles northbound of franconia notch. however, i will probably hike the flume side trail to camp. its a little longer, but a little more gradual, plus it goes over liberty mt summit. this is the start of the really spectacular scenery, once you get up on franconia ridge tuesday, 7-13 the plan is to camp just southbound of crawford notch, somewhere in the vicinity of ripley falls. however, i might be further back, at ethan pond campsite. wednesday, 7-14 hitch a ride at crawford notch and get re-supply, then hike on to lake of the crowds and find a place to camp somewhere below treeline thursday, 7-15 by now, i should be to osgood tent site, 5 miles from pinkham notch friday, 7-16 i should be passing thru pinkham notch in the late morn/early afternoon, and will probably stop for lunch. this is the end of the really spectacular section. franconia notch to pinkham notch is about 4 days and a wake-up. i will end the day in or near carter notch saturday, 7-17 hike into gorham and relax! sunday, 7-18 well deserved zero day. will probably re-supply this day monday, 7-19 exit gorham and hike on to gentian pond shelter and campsite again, this is just tentative and therefore subject to change. i can be flexible with the dates to meet the needs of anyone who wants to join me. i just ask that you are flexible, too, so that everyone who wants to do a section, can. i didnt feel it necessary to write out the maine section, since not much interest has been shown towards it, and it is much easier to plan for, with more options. if someone wants me to, i can write out the tentative plan for maine, too.
