trips - Pictured Rocks National ShorelineTrip Info
DescriptionHey All!! Me and some folks are going to Pictured Rocks National Shoreline and doing the entire 42.5 mile long portion of the North Country Trail from Grand Marais to Munising.(See Map link below) I have reserved campsites for 6 people. As of 5/29/2009, there are six of us going fer sure. If yer interested in going you would need to set up campsite reservations and contact the shuttle people, the link's below. We are planning on arriving at the Munising Falls Interpretive center on 6/25/2009 at 9:30 AM Local time and taking the shuttle to Grand Marais (Grand Sable Visitor Center) and then hiking south west back to Munising Falls Interpretive center and our cars on 6/29/2009 or maybe 6/28/2009. I hope to fish some and take a lot of pics. If ya are gonna use MapQuest er sumpin like that, put in Munising, Mi 49862. There is a $5.00 per night fee per person and reservations are recommended. To make the reservations costs an additional $15.00. The shuttle: http://www.altranbus.com/backpack.html will cost 20.00 per person and has to be reserved as well. That makes the total cost per person close to $40.00 (The $15.00 fee for the reservation would be split up by the number of folks going and added to the $40.00 above) Here’s a weather link: http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USMI0582_f.html If weather permits and we are not too worn out we might take the ferry to Grand Island. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hiawatha/ginra.html Here’s some stuff I stole from the website: http://www.munising.org/PDF/guidebook.pdf http://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/backcountry.htm#CP_JUMP_127605 http://www.nps.gov/piro http://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/upload/Backcountry-map-2008.pdf http://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/fishing.htm#CP_JUMP_107780 Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore includes a 42 mile section of the North Country National Scenic Trail, stretching from Grand Marais to Munising. The Lake Superior shoreline provides a spectacular place for backcountry camping, hiking, and relaxation. Hikers are rewarded with exhilarating views and opportunities for personal challenge and introspection. Campers must stay in designated backcountry campgrounds, located at two to five mile intervals along the trail. Each campground has a specific capacity; individual campsites within each backcountry campground are identified by a numbered post. Pets are not permitted. Fires are permitted only in community fire rings at the campgrounds; however, fires are not allowed at the Mosquito River and Chapel Beach campgrounds. Shuttle bus transportation is available for hikers wishing to take a bus to the starting point and hike back to their vehicle. For Altran's schedule, reservations, and fee information, please visit the Public Transportation webpage. Backcountry Permits All hikers and sea kayakers camping overnight in the backcountry must obtain a permit. Permits must be obtained in person; the permit is available the day of your trip or one day prior. Permits are available at the Hiawatha National Forest - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Interagency Visitor Center in Munising year round. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, permits are available at the Grand Sable Visitor Center in Grand Marais. If arriving after business hours, you must wait until the next day to obtain your permit and begin your trip. Only people in the camping party may obtain the permit. The Lakeshore backcountry is very popular, especially in July and August. Advance planning and having an alternate itinerary is important when requesting a permit. A user fee of $5 per person, per night is required when you pick up your permit. There are no refunds. Individual campsites are available for camping parties of 1-6 people (2 tent limit per campsite and each backcountry campground has several sites). See ya later. Randall
