Description

Hey all!!

Me and Attila are gonna do a Backpacking Trip on the Adena Trace Trail the first weekend on May!!

The basic plan would be to start out on Friday around 4:00 PM or so Eastern time at the parking lot that is located on the on the south west corner of the lake at the Dam.

Here are the GPS coordinates for this parking lot:

N 39 Degrees 26.265 Minutes
W 85 Degrees 063 Minutes.

Here are directions if ya don’t have a GPS:

From Indianapolis take I 70 East to State Road one (Indiana 1). Take State Road one (Indiana 1) South to Brookville. In. The dam is just east of the State Road one (Indiana 1) and 101 intersection. (Ya can’t miss this one. If you do stop and ask anyone they all know where this is at) Park by the Picnic Shelter restrooms (there’s only one shelter)
If you want to use any of the online mapping softwares (Mapquest or something like it) to find the dam and trailhead you should type in Brookville, In. and that will get ya your Dam directions, LOL.

The trailhead is at the west corner, just 1/4 mile north of the top of the dam, just where the woods start!!

Here are the GPS coordinates for this trailhead:

N 39 Degrees 26.581 Minutes
W 85 Degrees .333 Minutes

We would then hike north along the west side until dark, making camp at Battle Point on the trail near lakeshore.

Here are the GPS coordinates for this Camp:

N 39 Degrees 27.696 Minutes
W 84 Degrees 59.691 Minutes

On Saturday we would continue north to Fairfield Causeway and cross to the east side and then continue south until dark making camp somewhere along the trail, hopefully near a good water source.

On Sunday we would continue on to the Dam and head home.

That right were gonna do the whole thing, 26 miles in all!!

If ya wanna come in on Saturday AM there are a lot of places you can catch us. Post your request and I can provide directions and GPS coordinates. We will take you back to your car if you need to do that as well.

Here’s some trail info for those who need it:

The Adena Trail is single use 24-mile loop hiking trail located at Brookville Reservoir, 30 miles south of Richmond, Indiana and 30 miles north of Cincinnati. The Hoosier Hiking (HHC) Council was invited to design and build the Adena Trail. However, it should be noted that the majority of the west side of this trail existed in the form of pioneer roads and deer paths. I hiked the west route many times in the early and late eighties. The HHC has done a wonderful job with the improvements. They cut switchbacks and laid out a much more enjoyable route than the original. They deserve a lot of credit here!!! This is a very good trail and one you should check out. Many features of the trail make it one of Indiana's greatest trails. The exposed rock strata are among the oldest in the state: 600-million year old Ordovician fossils are exposed at every tiny draw the trail crosses. Contours are severe and the soil is poor, so the trail winds and changes grades frequently to avoid impassably steep slopes. This results in some magnificent views of the reservoir from on high as well as some memorable dips to the shoreline.

The west part of the loop consists of 11 miles of challenging trail in the roadless, backcountry area of Brookville Lake. This area has a lot of blow downs on the trail and can be weedy down by the creeks in mid summer. Large mature hardwoods are found in quantity and cedars dot the hillsides where ever they can find a hold. Expect Deer flies, ticks and chiggers May through mid July, but hardly any misquotes ever!!

Ok here’s a link to the weather, if your interested.

The last thing I want to have happen is someone saying that I misrepresented important information. So here goes my CYA!!!

1.) BACKPACKING CAN BE DANGEROUS (Ya might get big blister!): This trip is inherently dangerous and the risk of death or serious injury can never be completely eliminated. It is up to each individual to make his or her own choices regarding acceptable risk. By signing up for this trip you acknowledge that you recognize these risks and are prepared to be responsible for your own safety.

2.) Officially, camping is not allowed on the Adeana Trace Trail!!! That’s right, not allowed!!! I have camped on this trail many times and boaters camp on the shores all the time as well. But, the official stance is that it is illegal. Consider yourself warned!

See ya later.
