trips - Catskills Peakbagging tripTrip Info
DescriptionGoing to bag the trailess peaks of Halcott and Double Top. We will be base (car) camping at a designated legal campsite strategically located between the two mountains. Email me if you need info on how to get there. I am not posting the info on the campsite to the public. The hike to Doubletop will be via the Seager-Big Indian Trail. Where the trail crosses the Flatiron Brook, we will leave the trail and hike due south, climbing the ridge towards the summit. If we get to the Leanto, we went too far. The length of the roundtrip hike looks to be 7 miles with nearly 2000' of climbing. The trailhead is at the end of Dry Brook Road. Halcott is a 4 mile round trip 2000' climb with steep elevation. We will climb it from Rt 42. This is all trailess and pretty much straight up from Deep Notch. Please only the strongest of hikers join us for these climbs. Crazypace and myself are trying to finish the Catskill 3500 peaks and these are the last two peaks we need to finish and we would like to get them done this trip. This is going to be a very long day of rough hiking (13 mostly trailess miles with 4000' of climbing and descending) and we want to get both peaks done on Saturday, so we will need to move fast. Cockadoodle Pennsy we probably be crowing before the sun comes out and we may even return to camp in the dark. Much of the hike is off trail and will require bushwhacking. Crampons maybe necessary for icy areas. It looks like the snow will be mostly melted by then. I only say this because, in the past people have joined our hikes and were not able to finish them and then we had to curtail plans... aka the North Dome and Sherrill. If you are not going on the hikes to DT and Halcott, there are other hikes in the area too. There is nice easy hiking near the campsite and I emailed everyone about that. There is also a more strenuous, but short dayhike to the summit of Giant Ledge. There are several other places nearby that would make for some great hiking. Since we are carcamping, there are many options. Saturday night, we will have a party, especially if Crazypace and I finish the 3500!!! Sunday morning, the plan is to do Rusk with LThiker. He has wanted that peak forever. This is another trailess peak with a steep climb, but it seemed to be not very hard when we did it a few years ago, just very steep and it only took a couple hours. The plan is to start hiking before 7am and to be at the trailhead by 630am, so that means, leaving camp around 6am Saturday morning. WEATHER WATCH FOR PHOENICIA, NY
