DescriptionFYAO!!! This year falls on Valentine's Day weekend...it is also FRIDAY the 13th!! mooohahahaaaaaaa! *UPDATE* The plan that has been laid out is to hike into Slide Brook, via Elk Lake Trail. This is Trail #119 in the ADK Guide; Map F12-10 The Winter trailhead access is at the Ranger station and the total miles into basecamp would be about 3.5-4 miles. Regular trailhead to the SLIDE BROOK leanto is 2.3 miles, but the Winter access adds another mile or 2. Lillian Brook leanto is another option, if the 1st is occupied. This is 1.4 miles further in from Slide Brook. (for a total of 3.7 miles from the trailhead, plus the additional "winter trailhead" distance) Pros: *mostly-level, wide trails with markers, make it very sled-friendly and decrease the chance of anybody getting lost. *campfires are permitted *slide brook is an excellent jump-off for peaking Macomb, Hough, etc Cons: *the beginning section is on PRIVATE LAND (there is an easement for hikers to pass through) and camping anywhere prior to arrival at the lean-to is not permitted...meaning, you will need to get to the trailhead with plenty of time allowed for hiking in! As always, hike your own hike! Please be prepared and consult your guidebooks and maps for this trip!!! This is gonna be a good one! :)
