trips - Sipsey Spring '09 - Big Tree, Big WaterTrip Info
Description3/26 Update Unlikely that I'll be able to easily reschedule this trip in the foreseeable future so with the weather forecast clearing sometime Saturday morning, I'm heading on up then for at least that night and perhaps Sunday if there are others who might be able to take Monday off as well and are interested. Let me hear from you if so. ************************************************ ************************************************ 3/20 Update I was just made aware that turkey season will be in full swing next weekend and the hunters will be out in force. Probably be a good idea to bring a bit of orange to have on you while we're out hiking. ************************************************ ************************************************ 3/18 Update Just a few notes: -Weekend itinerary below has been modified a bit. What I had first put together was overkill. -Campsites at Brushy Lake are $5 per night...cash only. There are approximately 12 total sites and if the weather is nice, I can almost guarantee that the campground will be full by Saturday afternoon, if not Friday night. Not sure what the tent/person limit is per site but I would think at least 2/6. Factor in the standard 70% Sipsey Trip Attrition Rate, we shouldn't be concerned :) -There is potable water on site. Not sure if the hot water and showers at the day use Area have been turned on yet however. -Alcoholic beverages are not allowed at Brushy Lake. I've never had a problem but then again I've rarely seen a ranger there either...just be aware and behave accordingly :) -Quiet hours start at 10:00 PM. -With the warm temps we've had recently, I am sure the copperheads, rattlers and cottonmouths are already warming up. Watch where you are putting your hands and feet, especially on the Friday bushwhack. -Ticks are already active...pulled one 2 weeks ago. -I should be there late afternoon on Thursday. -Email me or post to the trip thread if you have any questions. Lookin forward to it! ************************************************ ************************************************ Plan is to car camp and spend the weekend taking various dayhikes while the waterfalls are in peak season. According to the tentative plan below, we could see in the vicinity of 20 falls in the 2.5 days. Plan for multiple ankle to knee deep creek crossings on Friday and Saturday P.M. Other highlight of the trip is a hike to Bee Branch Canyon and the Big Tree for those who have never had an opportunity to go on previous trips. Itinerary: Thursday P.M. Meet at Brushy Lake Campground that evening to secure enough sites for the weekend. Friday - "The Hidden Gems" Arnold Motorway - Quillan Creek - Riddle Creek loop (5 Miles - Bushwhack - 13+ waterfalls). Strenuous. Game time substitute for Parker Falls/Cascades or Eagle Creek/Little Ugly possible. Saturday - "Standard Sipsey" A.M. Thompson Creek - White Oak Hollow - Bee Branch to Big Tree and back (4.5 Miles - Unmaintained Trail). Moderate. P.M. Kinlock Falls - Easy, Fall Creek Falls - Easy Sunday A.M. Some combination of the following "quick" options: Turkey Foot Falls, Holmes Chapel Falls, Parker Falls (Bushwhack & trails but short hikes). Easy to moderate. Friday and Saturday agendas could easily be swapped if we wanted.
