trips - Hiking into Damascus for Trail DaysTrip Info
DescriptionHere's the basic plan. Subject to change somewhat depending on who wants to go. We will hike North into Damascus. More to come. UPDATED 4/4/09 I talked with Bob Peoples from the Kincora Hostel. He charges $4 per night (but will take any donations above that offered) and will charge us $30 per car load to get to Hwy 91 on Tuesday. He did say that this time of year is busy for him and he doesn't take reservations. It's a first come basis. If he doesn't have any beds we can set up our tents. I am planning on leaving my vehicle at his place and getting a ride back there after the hike. UPDATED 2/1/09 Sunday Night- meet up at Kincora hostel (423-725-4409) I am hoping to have Bob follow me back to Damascus and leave my car there. Mon - Have hostel owner, Bob, drive us to trailhead near Laural Fork Falls. Spend the day checking out the falls. ~8 miles Great hike for daypacks. Nasty climb at the beginning, great views of Watuaga Lake on the way up. Nice place for lunch at the top (Pond Mt). Steep downhill after the top. Careful if the trail is wet...NEED POLES. Once down will see dayhikers near river. Don't go left (High water trail to Laural falls shelter), stay right to Laurel Falls. Neat bridges. Steps after Falls are cool. Will walk back to Kincora Hostel and stay the night. Tues - Have Bob drop us off where AT crosses Hwy 91. Hike to Low Gap. ~7 miles Campsite is less than 1/4 from road (421). Water source at road is excellent (piped). Wed - Low Gap to Abingdon shelter ~5 1/4 miles. Good water at Abingdon. Thurs - Abingdon shelter onward about ~7.5 miles down the trail. Longest day with pack. Up and down for 4 miles and then a steady drop to camp. State line is at the 6-mile point. Camp near water. Fri - ~2 miles into Damascus. Steady downhill to Trail Days. This is still a draft. We are not doing killer kind of miles because we want to enjoy the area around us. We might go ahead and hike into Damascus on Thursday, depending on what the group wants to do. We want to be able to get into Damascus early enough to get a good spot, clean up and maybe take a nap before the night time fun begins.
