trips - Red River Gorge Suicide Run III (ROCK CLIMBING)Trip Info
DescriptionPLEASE READ!!!!! BECAUSE OF THE COLD WEATHER AND THE BURN BAN WE WILL BE MEETING AT THE KOOMER RIDGE CAMPGROUND AND CAMPING THERE OVER THE WEEKEND. PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY AND DISREGARD INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS PAGE TO THE PIONEER CAMP. AGAIN, WE ARE CAMPING AT KOOMER RIDGE CAMPGROUND. YOU CAN FIND IT IN GOOGLE. DATES ARE TENATIVE AND COULD CHANGE BASED ON INTEREST CLIMBING IS DANGEROUS: Climbing is inherently dangerous and the risk of death or serious injury can never be completely eliminated. It is up to each individual to make his or her own choices regarding acceptable risk. By signing up for this trip you acknowledge that you recognize these risks and are prepared to be responsible for your own safety SUMMARY This trip is specifically to spend time climbing in Red River Gorge. We'll be sticking to the lesser used trad areas so we should have peace, quiet, and a great time. The more advanced climbers will trad climb and fix anchors for top-ropes. New climbers will be able to climb on top-rope. The routes will be fairly easy and hence a LOT of fun. Friday night: Converge at Tunnel Ridge Road just off the "Pioneer" parking lot (see map below). Stage shuttle. Camp. No easy water so make sure to have a few jugs of H2O in your cars... but cars will be close at hand. Saturday: Travel to crag. We may have to drive but we almost certainly will have to hike depending on the crag I select. Climb, climb, climb! Saturday night: Camp somewhere. If we have a small enough group and enough daylight I would be open to fixing ropes at Courthouse Rock and camping on the top. It's a tricky class-4 climb but I am confident it can be done with a reasonable margin of safety. The added bonus if we can swing this is a rappel down the next morning! Sunday morning: Break camp, grab breakfast at the Hemlock Lodge. Depart for home. GEAR Standard lightweight backpacking gear for a weekend trip. The first night will be car camping. The second night will be backcountry camping. Plan accordingly based on your preference and experience. You will need a harness and climbing shoes. If you don't have these ask and people might have something you can borrow. CLIMBS I'll be working out the crag we will hang out in as we get closer to the date. I have the guidebook and will make a selection based on how easy it is to reach and the number of appropriate climbs. I am looking for stuff in the 5.3-5.5 range. This is stuff most kids can climb but don't think it will be easy if you have never climbed before. You will be whipped by the end of the day! Map Map of the Red River Gorge Area including Clifty Wilderness and Natural Bridge State Wilderness Area Camp Location and Parking Don't forget to stop and get an overnight camping permit at the Slade Shell Station. It closes at midnight. The parking lot for the first nights camp site is the "Pioneer" parking lot... the last parking lot on the right before you get to Auxier Ridge trailhead parking on Tunnel Ridge Road. If you reach the dead-end turn-around on Tunnel Ridge Road (by Auxier Ridge Trailhead) you went too far... turn around and try again! ![]() Pioneer Parking Lot on Tunnel Ridge Road View Larger Map Approximate Location of Camp View Larger Map Permits If you will be overnight camping and are parking a car you will require a parking pass. You can pick up a pass good for 3 days at the Shell Station in Slade. Note the station closes at midnight. The fee is $5 for three days or $30 for an annual hangtag. You can also order your pass via mail for a $2 fee.
