trips - Shenandoah National ParkTrip Info
DescriptionJuly 19th 2008 TRIP PLAN I'll be in Reston the previous week. I'll be driving to the park Friday night (the 18th) and arriving in the evening. The trip plan is TBD. MAY 31st 2008 TRIP PLAN I did a figure 8 hike made out of the Rose River Loop and the Lewis Falls Trail loop. I connected them with some hiking on the AT. It was an outstanding hike! APRIL 11-12th 2008 TRIP PLAN I went rock climbing on the cliffs in Great Falls Park... on the banks of the Potomac River. Outstanding climbing! On Sunday I hiked the loop up Old Rag, back down, and returned to my car. It was cold but a great day of hiking. JANUARY 18-20th 2008 TRIP ARCHIVE Winter exploring in the park. As a good friend of mine once said that while winter camping there is a thin line between survival and a good time. If you don't understand this you probably should not come on this trip. The plan will take shape as we move into December and I have an idea what the weather will look like and whether I'll actually be in Reston for work again. Right now here is what I am thinking. I will consider bringing my cross country skis if there is snow, but right now I am afraid there might not be any given the warming trend. The weight of the skis and boots will be terrible! Friday Night: After I get off work spend the night in a local hotel close to the park. Saturday: Park at Old Rag parking area. Hike along 600 to Ridge Trail. Hike/scramble Ridge Trail to Saddle Trail. TAKE MY TIME AND ENJOY MYSELF. This is winter hiking, not a fall death-march. Take Saddle Trail to Berry Hollow Fire Road/Weakley Hollow Fire Road/Old Rag Fire Road junction. Hike/Ski down Old Rag Fire Road perhaps. Locate a place to camp... not sure where yet but it would be nice to find a place with a shelter where we could have a fire to keep warm. Shelters on Old Rag are day-use only so it would have to be another shelter or camping area below 2800 feet. Sunday: Hike/Ski out to Old Rag parking area. OCTOBER 12-14, 2007 TRIP ARCHIVE The southern portion of the park really resonates with me. It is a very cool area. Here is a map.: http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/riprap_area.pdf I am like a kid in a candy shop in this place... Friday: I will be forced to overnight in a Reston hotel because of my job. Saturday: Hike Paine Tun Rrail/Trayfoot Mountain Trail/AT Loop. Hike to Blackrock Hut to spend the night. (~10 miles) Sunday: Drive to Riprap parking area. Hike loop made up of Riprap Trail/Wildcat Ridge Trail/AT back to Riprap Trail Parking. (~10 miles)
