“I was listening to sports talk radio on the way home this evening. They said Bobby Gaston had spoken with the ref who made the PF call in the TN-FL game and the ref's explanation was this....

Wade(TN) and Baker(FL) were mouthing off at eat other and he could tell that they were about to get into it so he ran over there and Wade hit Baker, then the ref said "Both of you stop it, right now!!", after which Baker immediately hit Wade. So ref warns them both and Baker threw a punch anyway, so he threw a flag on Baker.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong but that was the explanation. Go Vols!!”

It’s not just the SEC, Dayhiker. You know what really got me steamed? The last regular season game we played last year was FSU. We had ACC officials. All the sportscasters in the country called that the worst officiating of the year. In 30 years of watching college football, I’ve never seen a game that was so poorly called (and obviously one-sided) as that game. I never like to whine about excuses, but there are actions that need to be pointed out (like a neighbor who mows his lawn at 6am). It’s nice (but not necessary) when lots of other people share your view.

For all the neanderthal foot-dragging the big-10 has done about instituting a playoff, at least they’re experimenting with instant replay. And they felt they needed to do that because of poor calls. I salute the big-10!

Every weekend I see at least one bad call in some game. It’s human nature to make mistakes. What I find unconscionable is those games that are so obviously lopsided. Take the Florida/Tennessee game again. When you watch the replay of that final personal foul call (that everyone says should have been offsetting penalties) you’ll notice that the ref didn’t even make a move for his flag when the Tennessee player hit the Florida player. He only reached for his flag after the Florida player hit. After a game of lopsided calls, something smelled very fishy about that.

But like cops shooting civilians. People will grumble for a little while, a cursory investigation will follow, and it will get swept under the rug.



Still, it doesn’t get any better than Tennessee/Florida. Florida had their chances and Tennessee stopped them. That game is a yearly classic.”

“longlost - my only problem with that is that the two slaps happened immediately back to back. Unless that ref is the fastest talker in the world, I doubt he could have said much of anything before the second slap. Sounds like a convenient, "I screwed up" excuse.”

“You're probably right. I wasn't quoting the ref, just the radio show host. For all I know, he just said "Stop it!!" I think we need to get any surviving members of the Warren Commission on this while the evidence is still fresh.

I do know that the interval between slaps was longer than the nanosecond Gaffney had the ball in his game winning phantom catch of '00. Hey, I guess there's football karma after all!!

Operative word being yet! I was starting to feel good about playing yall and AU and LSU until our QB went down. That's not a woe is me comment, just fact. We may yet do well, or we may have gotten spanked by all 3 with Brodie, but I was starting to like our chances.

The Arkansas game will be very telling for the rest of our season.”

I read the recent SI last night and had to laugh reading the article about Auburn. Sorry fellas but come on. They win a game by 1 pt , and accomplish this with a questionable call, and now SI is writing about how Auburn's "west coast offense" is working so well with Jason Campbell at the controls.

Huh!? If they had not gotten that call and the game had been lost, would they be praising that "west coast offense". If anybody on Auburn deserves credit it's their DEFENSE. Talk about dressin up a pig! Until the end, Auburn's Offense was truly offensive.

Now, as WVU fan I know something about offensive offenses. They were pathetic against MD. I admit that they are WAY over-rated at #6.”

“Well, despite pixie's comments implying how easy it would be for USC to dispatch Stanford, it took a HUGE effort and big comeback to beat us. It was a good, exciting game. Hardly any penalties, and no bad calls that I can remember. Stanford held the Trojans on their first drive, so they had to settle for a FG. Then an interception returned to the 1, and it was quickly 10-0. But Stanford put together some very nice drives, and was ahead 14-10, when they had a drive stall, and set up for a FG attempt. Oops! A fake that went for a TD. SC came back with a drive of their own to score with about a minute left in the 1st half to make it 21-17. Stanford tried one play, then was resigned to run out the clock. So they handed it off for a play up the middle. Only problem was the SC forgot to tackle him - 82-yard TD!! The 2nd half was all USC, who outscored the mighty Cardinal 14-0.

I have to say I appreciate the good sportsmanship. With a minute to play and SC on Stanford's 20, they probably could have scored again, but just took a knee. A lot of other coaches would have insisted on piling on the score. Final: USC 31, Stanford 28.”

“I got back from yesterday from Mammoth Cave and turned on Sportscenter as soon as I got home. USC survived Stanford. I heard on the road that my Ala mater (did I spell that right?) survived the fighting Illini and are tied for first in the Big Ten.

Look out Pixie. I smell a Rose Bowl between my Purdue and your USC. Hope your defense improves.”

“Congrats Arky. The TD before the half really hurt. Jones's 50 yard run hurt and us holding on one of the last drives. Seems like we started around midfield and had a screen get down to the 28 or so. Back it up 10. Worked out to a 42 yard penalty. We also goofed big time on a punt. We had facemasking. First time around yall had a 28 yard put, the next time it was mid 40's + the 5 yard penalty. Both teams fought hard and the better team made fewer mistakes.

I wound up listening to the 2nd half on the radio and didn't get to see the 4th. Sounds like it was pretty exciting.

Did I mention that my nephew is a human freak of a football player?”

“So my alumni friends are blaming the bad beginning of the SC/Stanford game on me. You see, I got sort of trashed on Friday night with my friend LeAnn and then was super hungover Saturday. I wasn't going to meet up with my friends at all and watch at home, but I don't have TBS! ARG! So I get dressed and set off to meet them in Seattle. What should normally be a 15 minute drive turned to an hour! Yup! That's Seattle for ya! So to make a long story short the moose and I were late to watching the game. And if my moose isn't watching, SC loses. But we came back! Yay!

There was one bad call or lack of call. Pass interference should have been called at one point and wasn't. That's ok, we won anyhow.”
