They are several shades darker than you football unis. I then see your football unis from the 60's when SOS was your savior the first time and I connect the dots. I'll write it very simple so that an architect can understand. 1. Old footage showing your orange and blue uni's being much darker than they are now. Note I say orange and blue. I've never called them anything but orange and blue, just that they are darker. 2. Modern footage showing the band in uni's that are basically the same color. Conclusion: Maybe the football uniforms have changed over time!” 4:31:55 PM 8/26/04 “Dayhiker, I beleive it more likely that your vision has changed over time, you old fart. Your rapidly advancing dementia has caused you to be WRONG AGAIN! Bama's uniforms are still ugly, and NOTHING will make up for that. ESPN doesn't want them on TV. Your "tradition" is the only thing you have now that you, and your team, are becoming incontinent. Pixie, compared to Princeton (17 championships), Yale (18 championships), Harvard (9 championships), and Army, USC IS a Johnny-come-lately. Any idea which two teams played the first college football game? Violin? At least Michigan won a mythical national championship in 1901 (tied with Harvard). That’s still 30 years after Princeton captured the first title. Alabama won its first title in 1926. It tied with Dartmouth. USC won in 1931, long after Penn, Chicago, Cornell, Pittsburgh, Ga Tech, Illinois, California, and Stanford had all won championships. Doesn’t it just give you goose bumps thinking about all the football “tradition” at those schools? Notre Dame didn’t win until 1924. That pretty much sums up the ridiculous idea of “tradition is best.” Who cares about Princeton’s, Yale’s, Harvard’s, or Rutger’s “tradition” except for people who live in the past. Gosh, let’s bring back steam powered cars for “traditional” environmental reasons. Check out these rankings. Here’s some “tradition” for you: Most appearances in a January Bowl since 1993 1. Florida 2. Florida St. 3. Tennessee 4. Michigan 5. Ohio St. Most top 15 finishes in final polls since 1990: 1. Florida St. 2. Florida 3. Miami 4. Tennessee 5. Michigan Most wins since 1990: 1. Nebraska 2. Florida St. 3. Florida 4. Miami 5. Tennessee Consecutive weeks in AP or coaches polls (ALL TIME) 1. Nebraska 2. Florida 3. Florida St. 4. Alabama 5. Michigan ALL-TIME consecutive seasons ranked in the top 15 of the final polls 1. Nebraska 2. Florida St. 3. Oklahoma 4. Florida 5. Alabama Consecutive 9-win seasons (ALL-TIME): 1. Nebraska 2. Florida St. 3. Florida 4. Alabama 5. Miami Consecutive 10-win seasons (ALL TIME): 1. Florida St. 2. Miami 3. Florida ALL-TIME bayyyybeee means since they started keeping records. Yessir let’s all pay homage to Yale’s great football “tradition.” BOOLA-BOOLAH, BOOLA-BOOLAH, …” 6:46:41 AM 8/27/04 “arc - you've already regurgitated those stats. Thank you, thank you very much. Here's a tidbit for yall. Georgia Tech has either more or the same amount of SEC titles as Auburn. GT hasn't been a member of the SEC in probably 30 years.” 6:50:05 AM 8/27/04 “First game for the Lobos is a week from tonight. Washington State. That'll be a hoot. Record year for season ticket sales, expectations are high.” 6:55:12 AM 8/27/04 “4 and freaking 9 my friend 17-7 and 28-23 ring a bell?” 10:23:14 AM 8/27/04 “Speaking of Auburn and GT, does 17-3 ring a bell? Your radio guy got a new phrase at the start of last season, "FIELD GOAL, AUBURN!!!"” 10:38:33 AM 8/27/04 ““arc - you've already regurgitated those stats.” Dayhiker WRONG AGAIN! Oh clueless fan of probationary has-beens. Those are new stats. Bama must be one of the few schools you can graduate from without being able to read. Bama motto: When cousins marry, it just makes us a closer family. The Greeks had a “tradition” of winning battles. The Turks had a “tradition” of winning battles. The Romans had a “tradition” of winning battles. Do you think the USA fears, or cares, about those historical footnotes? Good lord some of you folks sound like a destitute native, living in the slums of Peru, and dreaming about the glory years of the Inca empire. If you folks really feel that “tradition” so important, then don’t live your lives as hypocrites. Y’all should be grinding cornmeal with stones, beating your cloths against rocks in the river to clean them, and riding horses to work because of the long and honorable “tradition” of these ways of living. PATHETIC!!!” 12:27:28 PM 8/27/04 arclite “"Pixie, compared to Princeton (17 championships), Yale (18 championships), Harvard (9 championships), and Army, USC IS a Johnny-come-lately. Any idea which two teams played the first college football game? Violin?" Ok, let's compare. USC has 10 national championships. Harvard has 9. Do the math!” 12:30:01 PM 8/27/04 “You caught me. I didn't actually read your propaganda. I saw the crap, a la Violink, and just kept moving the scroll bar.” 12:35:52 PM 8/27/04 Mike Williams denied! “No more Mikey. He screwed himself by dropping out of NCAA early and then trying to get back in. I am sad, he was my favorite player.” 12:43:17 PM 8/27/04 ““Ok, let's compare. USC has 10 national championships. Harvard has 9. Do the math!" pixie Not very good at staying on subject are you? Welllll what can you expect from a USC person? They still makin’ good LSD out there are they? USC IS a Johnny-come-lately and didn’t win a championship until 59 years after Princeton. Unless you don’t think 59 years is a long time. You must be pretty old. Speaking of not staying on subject. Yale held the record for most games won at least until 2000. NOT, as some fools claim, Michigan. Michigan may have surpassed them by now. Sorry my almanac is old. BUT APPARENTLY NOT NEARLY AS OLD AS PIXIE!!! Ahhhhh dayhiker. I caught a pig by the tail didn’t I? That’s OK, I made a mistake once. Wait until I post the league stats. Bama played the most important role in the SEC as far as making us all look good. OH GOD! I can’t believe I said that.” 4:07:08 PM 8/27/04 arclite “Why are you so abusive? Can't you play nice with the other children? The insults sound pretty immature. Guess that must mean I AM older than you.” 4:22:13 PM 8/27/04 “I love it when Cocoa gets on here. Hey Cocoa! Auburn Blows!” 5:14:48 PM 8/27/04 “Chili you will like this. There was a truck in here today with a giant power "T" on the back glass. It also had orange and white flames down the side of the truck. It made me want to retch.” 5:34:08 PM 8/27/04 “OOOOOOOH, pixie that's cute: "You are a meany and I am sooooo mature." Older maybe, however, mature people know when to take someone seriously and when not. My obnoxiousness is my own weirdness, it has nothing to do with you, and you should know better than to let it bother you. Every year I do my obnoxious sports fan shtick. You shouldn't take things so personally. You are more than welcome to nail me to the cross at any time. I'm secure enough to take a good (and if you prefer, obnoxious) ribbing. My obnoxious shtick is my way of not taking the angry insanity, that I see in some fans and sports pundits, so seriously. The sports pundits (writers and TV) especially, stir the emotional pot just to sell their product. And many people buy it. So take this, you humorless USC theater major: As a SEC fan, I am SO embarrassed. The VT/USC officiating wasn’t as absolutely pathetic as what the ACC officials did to Florida against FSU last year, but it was bad. I started to wonder whether the SEC pays their officials enough that they feel a need to moonlight by taking extra cash to fix games. One call in particular was pathetically obvious. That phantom pass interference penalty against VT. The announcers talked about it the rest of the game, and with good reason. What a pathetic call!!! That penalty changed the whole momentum of the game. If USC is the best team in college football, we’re in for a mediocre season. Granted it was a first game, but they were not dominant against an unranked team that came to play. Maybe USC will make the chumpionship game this year because of a weak schedule. They may win with speed but USC won’t overpower anyone. The announcers kept talking about one 270lb lineman for USC. 270LBS!!! You’re not going to overpower anyone with anorexic midgets on your O-line. Let’s hope they’re not in the Rose Bowl against Michigan. Sure they can beat Michigan, that’s easy, but watching that game Saturday reminded me why I hardly ever watch the Rose Bowl, especially when it’s USC against Michigan. It turns into a bad concert. First we get the USC band: Duh Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh Duh Duh Duh… Duh-Duh Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh Duh Duh Duh…. Then we get the Michigan band: Duh Duh-Duh Duh-Duh Duh-Duh Duh Duh-Duh Duh-Duh Duh-Duh…. ...over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over… add-infinitum I want to watch a football game, and instead get a battle of the bands. It’s so annoying to me that I usually have to turn the game off and watch reruns of Three’s Company instead. It was absolutely wonderful to kick off the college football season. I may have to tone down my act as the season gets going and Florida starts to lose some games. Hey, I may have to tone down even further if Florida manages to win a few.” 6:44:58 AM 8/30/04 “The American Heritage® Dictionary defines shtick as a characteristic attribute, talent, or trait that is helpful in securing recognition or attention. Those of us who know him realize that arclite is natural obnoxious and starved for attention.” 7:31:26 AM 8/30/04 “The attention thing is because Florida was a second tier school for about 90% of it's existance. It's a "won't any one come and play with me" sort of thing.” 8:07:19 AM 8/30/04 “Let me explain something to Pixie. Arc has his "orange" side, which is an annoying day-glo or neon kind of attitude. He blinds us with his long rants and questionable "statistics". Then there is his "blue" side, which comes out when Florida has another disappointing season. You must understand that he is driven by jealousy of us fans whose teams have a long and storied tradition, like the Kansas Jayhawks.” 8:54:31 AM 8/30/04 “"Why are you so abusive? Can't you play nice with the other children? The insults sound pretty immature. Guess that must mean I AM older than you." Pixie: Arc's always an a-hole about football. He'll tell you things like..."My obnoxious shtick is my way of not taking the angry insanity, that I see in some fans and sports pundits, so seriously.", but by doing so he actually BECOMES the obnoxious sports dick he says he doesn't like to take seriously. I have no problem with showing school pride and being very loyal to your team and/or school but when you have to make others out to be stupid because they support their own team well... It's a guy thing I think.” 9:19:30 AM 8/30/04 “Listen to Jim Rome and you'll better be able to understand "Gator Fan".” 9:21:21 AM 8/30/04 Thanks for the tips all. “Yeah, I was actually in the moutains during the game, but I agree, SC should have been more of a presence. It's cause my Mikey is gone.” 1:37:56 PM 8/30/04 “I agree with arclite. If USC is the number one team, this season will be a yawner. Had it not been for that really #&%!$ty call, number one would have been in real trouble.” 3:33:20 PM 8/30/04 “Pixie - Don't let mean ol' arclite get to you. He's a rough and tumble SEC guy and one of the nicest guys to hike and camp with. ;-)” 3:45:58 PM 8/30/04 Well they are not #1 “They are #3 now. (Thanks Stovie, for the kind words. : )” 4:20:18 PM 8/30/04 “Merriam Webster’s defines shtick as a show business routine, gimmick, or gag. Those of us who know him realize that violin is an obnoxious prevaricator and starved for brains. Truer words were never said Dunadan… Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!! Nigal, I may be bragging, but I think I’ve out-obnoxioused many sports fans/writers that I’ve ever seen or read. I run reeeeeelly close to the edge of not even being worthy of responding to some times. It’s an Internet thing, and a northeastern humor thing. Being from the Midwest, you have no sense of humor other than slapstick or cow tipping. WHY DO I NEED TO EXPLAIN THIS EVERY YEAR? I have read so much bilious trash about Steve Spurrier over the years that I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. And many of you seemed to buy into it without ever having a shred of first hand knowledge. NOW THAT’S OBNOXIOUS. Every year I hear pundits confidently making statements about their perception of reality that rarely, if ever, are true. NOW THAT’S OBNOXIOUS. Every year I read (and have experienced) fan violence between people who don’t know the difference between a game and real life. NOW THAT’S DANGEROUSLY OBNOXIOUS. Then I hear many of y’all espousing football passion and ignoring our annual football contest. I understand violin doing that because he’s so afraid to lose at anything that his butt whistles when he walks. But for some of you others, IT'S JUST OBNOXIOUS. Nigal, I don’t even come close to some folks, even in my most obnoxious posts. BUDDHA!!! I thought we’d lost ya, son. Good to see the second half of what I consider to be the best national rivalry game in college football. Pixie, in my opinion, Mikey, and USC, got ripped off. He didn’t even decide to go pro until the courts gave hope to one of those thugs from Ohio St (I forget his name). He would have stayed if not for the initial court decision. I think he got a bum deal. Kudos to Tennessee fans. They organized charity drives to help the folks caught in Hurricane Charlie. Very classy!!! Thanks Stove. I promise I’ll bring my sleeping bag next time we hike. Although sharing was nice.” 4:22:49 PM 8/30/04 arclite “LOL. You gonna make the next Ocala HPM hike?” 4:29:05 PM 8/30/04 “I'm afraid to lose? I'm a life long Rutgers fan for cryin' out loud! No one but no one on this thread is a bigger loser than me! Oh wait... isn't Geobeet an Army fan?” 4:29:10 PM 8/30/04 “Crap, my poor team is 'rebuilding' again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a 4-7 year. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!” 4:32:32 PM 8/30/04 “I had some hot wings on Friday. They gave me heartburn which reminded me of arclites propoganda here on TT. Speaking of arc and wings, have you been able to eat any hot wings since your pepper spray incident a few years back? Just curious. My guess is that Yellowstone cured you of hot wings. What a pity. I be luvin me some hot wings.” 5:14:30 PM 8/30/04 “You betchya Stove!!! I'm looking forward to seeing evryone again. Their have been some fine comedians in the past, and that crowd sure likes to laugh around the campfire. Violin, you were born a LOOOOOOOSER. Every year, you have had a chance to redeem youself, and every year you run and hide. Day, you do remember that it was Wall-Man who took the hit don't you? And that we were in Glacier NP? But you were CLOSE! Sorta like your team with the ugly uniforms huh? Close but no cigar.” 6:34:03 AM 8/31/04 “Ahh Glacier, that's right. I do like the way you tried to blame the incident on someone else though. Nice touch.” 6:52:23 AM 8/31/04 “Well I'll be at the game this weekend whem my Awbuhn Tigers face the highly touted Louisiana Monroe school for the deaf and handicapped. I was backpacking soI didn't get to see the game... but could it be possible VT is actually good too? Beamer is a great coach and puts together some great teams from time to time.” 8:23:10 AM 8/31/04 “Michigan's opening against Miami of Ohio. Could be a good game as MofO can be a spoiler. Then it's off to Notre Dame for the big game.” 8:35:01 AM 8/31/04 I HATE POLITICS! “I wish people would just STFU and vote. Thank GOD CFB is here!” 8:47:47 AM 8/31/04 “I'll be rooting for Rutgers this weekend. They weren't quite good enough to take out Mich. St. last year, but they looked pretty good. The spread is six, Rutgers may be a program on the rise. I'm not sure which three teams I'll be betting (just for fun) on this week. My thought is that teams generally do not cover large spreads early in the season. I doubt that Florida will cover this week. I'm looking at taking La. Munroe and 38.5. I believe that Auburn will look to establish its running game. That will burn time and keep the score lower. What do you think cocoa? I'd love to bet Bowling Green to cover 32.5 but Oklahoma (and Nebraska) always seem to run up the score on their chump-of-the-week opponents. White looked awful in his last two games. So they may come out trying to establish the pass this year. Texas A&M getting 10 from Utah? Anyone have any thoughts on that one? Central Florida getting 23.5 from Wisconsin looks like a possibility. Anyone know how Wisconsin will look this year? Kent St. getting 29 from Iowa scares me. Iowa looked very good, and very balanced, against the GATORS last year. Anyone have any ideas about Iowa? Pitt getting 1.5 from S. Florida and Washington giving 3.5 to Fresno St. look interesting. Any feedback?” 4:19:25 PM 8/31/04 “I hope Utah blasts A&M. I'm pulling against A&M more than any other school out there. Actually, I'm pulling against fRAN more than anything. I hope the Utes shell'em. Last year Auburn had to do all sorts of crazy things not to run up the score on La. Monroe and that's with their lame duck OC. The new OC will probably be out to tweak his offense. Bama's a big favorite in their game. I just hope we don't have any injuries. The Thin Red Line isn't just a movie anymore.” 4:31:10 PM 8/31/04 “Wisconsin looks to be tough again this year arclite. I do not believe they lost many players and I want to say they have a strong class coming in. Iowa was a real surprise last year. I don't think anyone picked them going to a bowl game. It all depends if the QB that started last year is still with them. I think he was a senior, but not sure.” 4:39:08 PM 8/31/04 “Thanks, Day & WK. Its fun to start discussing teams from around the country this early. For those from the frozen Michigan tundra, whose brain cells haven’t thawed yet, I’ll provide examples, throughout the year, for exactly why I make an issue of obnoxious behavior with regards to college football. I’m sure that there will be many examples. Coral Gables Aug. 31, 2004 AP- Miami cornerback (one of the best in the nation) Antrel Rolle described how it felt to be arrested in July for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, and be in handcuffs in front of his father- “There’s not a single day that goes by that I don’t think about it.” …”Rolle called the ordeal “heartbreaking” but also said it made him stronger. Now he plans to use it as motivation. “Someone’s going to pay for it, and I know it’s going to be the opponents on the other side of the field,” he said. “They’re going to pay for what I felt every single day. Someone’s going to feel my hurt, someone’s going to feel my pain.” Imagine that, a star athlete who is unable to accept personal responsibility and then motivates himself by taking out his displaced anger on others. Now, THAT’S obnoxious.” 6:36:10 AM 9/01/04 “How about Miami football player Willie Williams and his 11 arrests. When his arrest record most folks backed off recruiting him, but not the 'Canes. How's that for obnoxious.” 7:18:45 AM 9/01/04 “UT still doesn't know who will start at QB. However the last time this happened the choice was between Peyton Manning and that other kid. The one that went back to A&M for a mediocre career. I wonder how many UT fans can even remember who Brandon Stewart was? The excitement from last season has carried over in Memphis. Virtually the entire offensive team is back at the U of Memphis and the opener against Old GrandMiss should be the tale of the tape. In any event, I will be hiking this weekend so I guess I will get the scores when I get out of the woods. Hmmm, I wonder if I can sneak a radio in cottonsocks pack?” 9:58:55 AM 9/01/04 “Let's go Noles.” 10:33:41 AM 9/01/04 “I remember Brandon Stewart. Didn't he start the first half of the year over Peyton?” 10:41:15 AM 9/01/04 “How true about Willie Williams. Randy Moss was the same thing. Some schools seem to have a win at all cost attitude. In the last four years, I remember two highly publicized recruits that Florida backed off of because of questionable behavior. One went to Tennessee, the other to Ohio St. Sorry boys, as much as I respect (and like) Tennessee, I'm not kidding this time. Too bad that the Leak brothers won't be duking it out at Neyland this year. But I really don't think it would have helped the vols anyway. Here's this week's picks: Pitt getting 1.5 La Munroe getting 38.5 Texas A&M getting 8.5 Let's see how I start out the year. Got to practice for the main event: TT FOOTBALL GOD!!!” 4:05:28 PM 9/01/04 “THE FIRST MAJOR WEEKEND OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!! Am I the only person here who's excited? Three more picks just for good measure: Akron getting 15 Huston giving 3 Vanderbilt getting 4 I need to clear the cobwebs and start to understand how the teams stck up. Does anyone else wish to share some picks?” 6:26:05 AM 9/02/04 Hey arc, love to talk spreads “Any game is a good one when you throw the spread in there. After watching auburn lay 72 on La monroe last year Id have a tough time picking them. However, their reciever was playing QB that day and Auburn blocked three punts. I think AU will put up 50 pts, but a backdoor cover isn't out of the question. Other games: I like T A&M getting 9.5. I really like utah and don't like Fran, but i think it should be a good game. Watch out for Utah RB Marty Johnson, roller coaster career w/ the Utes, but he's big and good. Was leading the NCAA in rushing 2 years ago before he blew his knee. UTEP has lots of returning players this year and a good coach (Insert favorite joke here). I think they cover 25.5 Cincy should hang w/ Ohio st. I'll take the 17 points. I think the Oregon ST/LSU game will be similar to the USC/VT game except LSU will not have to come back to win. I think OSU will score some points We'll see what the scarlett knights have, getting 6.5 at home sounds good to me. Fresno St should be pretty good this year and Washington is on the slide, wrong team favored. Fresno +3.5 Purdue has no defense, Syracuse should score enough to cover 12.5 Ahh, Mia/FSU what a way to start the season. This should be the seminoles year to beat Mia, as long as the weather isn't as bad as last year. Vandy may go bowling this year, could win this one outright, but too +4 is too close for me in this one. I don't have any money to play around w/ so I do it for fun, I use wagerline.com. Can pick all games against the spread and it keeps up w/ it for you. Check it out if you like playing the spread. Now it's time to sit back and watch some football, I'll also be playing along on NCAA 2005 for Xbox. My wife is in for a football overdose this weekend, but I deserve it damn it. I've had to watch all her reality shows and MTV garbage for 9 mos. It's a celebration b!tches.” 10:08:59 AM 9/02/04 “What does the Magin 8ball foretell for Ole Miss/Memphis.” 10:12:59 AM 9/02/04 Oh yeah, one more “UNLV Will cover 20 pts at TENN. They have a pretty decent defense. One of the best DB's in the country Jamal Brimmer. Tenn will win by grinding it out, but won't cover 20. Chili, what's the word?” 10:13:00 AM 9/02/04 “I heard James Banks of UT is out for this game.” 10:23:09 AM 9/02/04 “Hey, did you hear Ohio state's coach is only dressing 20 players for the game against Cinn?
