The are thinking of playing a nation-wide schedule, whatever that means. Navy made really fast strides under Paul Johnson, who is in his second season and headed to a bowl. It's good to see the Squids doing well (don't tell my swabbie friends I said that!). It will be better when Army is too. Some years back, Army and Navy both went to bowls. Navy won theirs; Army lost. But Army won the only game that counts that year. The West Point motto: Duty, Honor, Country, Beat Navy!” 12:49:23 PM 12/10/03 “shep, you've made some good posts. you're not...not...not a...not a...not a jawja fan... are you? I'd hate to think that I may have to re-examine my hatred for their fans, their team, their mascot, their smell...” 3:42:35 PM 12/10/03 “It could be worse, arclite. He could be an LSU fan.” 3:47:33 PM 12/10/03 “playing a nation-wide schedule means finding opponents who need an easy homecoming game. They’ll join a conference when they have something to bring to the table.” 3:53:17 PM 12/10/03 “Army can always count on Tomato U to be there for them. Army was in Conference USA. Weak as that conference is, they couldn't win much with Coach "Dingle" Berry at the helm.” 4:10:37 PM 12/10/03 “Here are a listing of the 28 bowls as listed on espn.com Memphis at North Texas Miami (OHIO) at Louisville N.C. Please list winners only so that they can be cut and pasted into a spreadsheet so that 2nd place can be determined. Tennessee Georgia Florida Michigan State Georgia Tech Memphis Virginia Tech Bowling Green Texas Tech Texas Pitt Miami of Ohio Boise State Miami Southern Miss West Virginia Boston College Missouri USC Ole Miss Wisconsin UCLA NC State Oregon State Oklahoma Kansas State Oregon Houston” 5:16:19 PM 12/10/03 “Ok, dayhiker, are we associating points with these? Team at the top with the greatest number. Between arclite's spreadsheet and your post, I feel like a lost ball in high weeds when it comes to understanding the format.” 8:18:25 AM 12/11/03 “Oh, and regardless of the format, I see you have finally come to your senses and have Tennessee on the top of your list.” 8:22:24 AM 12/11/03 Here's how it's done, boys and girls. “Leave it to old Uncle Dunny to tell you kids how to participate in the annual "Trail Talk Win One To Become God" football contest. You pick the winner of each bowl game. The game you feel most confident about is listed as your number one game. If you predict it correctly, you get 28 points. You get zero points for an incorrect prediction. Number two game gets you 27 points if you are correct, and so on..... I will step up to the plate on my next post. Good luck, suckers!” 9:56:42 PM 12/11/03 “1. Ft Worth Bowl, TCU wins 2. Sun Bowl, Minnesota 3. Tangerine, NC State (Heck, maybe this will work like the beer bet with Violin. Hope so.) 4. Bygod, don't they look good up there?” 8:48:08 AM 12/12/03 “Y'all missed one: Toilet Bowl: Army loses even though other team fails to show up” 9:01:11 AM 12/12/03 “chili, I had to put UT at the top. The big unknown will be if the disappointment of going to a crappy bowl with a 10-2 record will take the fire out of them.” 10:27:01 AM 12/12/03 “No, I tend to think just the opposite dayhiker. I think they will play with the pissed off factor.” 10:28:23 AM 12/12/03 “Probably so. I did tend to pick SEC heavy upfront.” 10:53:22 AM 12/12/03 “If Memphis was sure to have their number one back in the game, I would have gone a little stronger there. But he is "iffy" at best. Late in the season, he was leading the nation in all purpose yards.” 10:55:33 AM 12/12/03 “Dayhiker is living the SEC fantasy with his first three picks. Hey, Geo, did you know that Army's interim coach and defensive coach is from Lawrence, Kansas?” 11:28:22 PM 12/12/03 Don't be a football wienie! “Hey, chumps, Your Old Uncle Dunadan wants to see your feeble attempts at predicting the bowl games! How about the Michigan and Ohio State fans that we have on this forum? How about that Purdue fan who lives in southern California? What about that chick from Iowa who is a pretend backpacker? Then there's the Scarlet Knight fan who had bettter use his last days on TT wisely. Any Army fans out there? There are so many TT'ers who could make this a real hoot. Let's get it on......” 6:45:32 PM 12/15/03 “Umm,,and just what place did you finish in last years contest?” 8:18:12 AM 12/16/03 “Tennessee Georgia N.C. State Hawaii Pittsburgh Texas Tech Texas Fresno State Minnesota Southern Miss North Texas Miami (OH) Bowling Green California Florida New Mexico West Virginia Boise State Nebraska Mississippi Florida State Michigan Colorado State Auburn Ohio State Tulsa LSU Arkansas Read 'em & weep boys. UA & UT as my bookends. Ain't it purty?” 10:04:34 AM 12/16/03 “cocoa hasn't listed his because he's embarassed about having to list Wisconsin in first place.” 10:13:17 AM 12/16/03 “ROFFLMDAO @ dayhiker.” 10:17:52 AM 12/16/03 “I concur with Chili. I think I can hear Cocoa cursing from here. Probably saying something about Bama not playing in a bowl game.” 10:38:26 AM 12/16/03 “As tempting as it was to view the order of your picks, I have refrained in true sportsmanlike fashion. That means I'm like a sportsman... sort of. Instead, I spent the last few days pouring over power ratings, injury reports, offenses, defenses, rushing leaders, passing leaders, receiving leaders... Finally I thought, THIS IS NUTS! And I ended up throwing darts at a board. Best guess folks. If I were the current football god I could afford to be cocky. But I got my butt kicked last year. One thing I know fur shur. I can't possibly do any worse than DUMBADAN! Man, if he don't make it to Sipsey, let's burn his effigy and make up horrible stories about his character that we can post here. Dayhiker (Sir Football god), prepair to be boarded! AAARRH meee barfys! 28 Miami of Ohio 27 Boise State 26 NC State 25 Texas 24 Hawaii 23 Bowling Green 22 Tennessee 21 Kansas State 20 USC 19 Ole Miss 18 Pittsburgh 17 West Virginia 16 Texas Tech 15 Florida 14 Virginia Tech 13 North Texas 12 Georgia Tech 11 Georgia 10 Auburn 9 Minnesota 8 Utah 7 Miami 6 Arkansas 5 Oklahoma 4 UCLA 3 New Mexico 2 Boston College 1 Nebraska” 3:39:17 PM 12/16/03 “arc, I would prefer not to be boarded. What is this, prison? I know you've spent your career around artsy types, but no boarding for me, thank you very much.” 3:49:31 PM 12/16/03 well well well........... “if anyone is to try to knock the SEC from now on just lookee how many SEC teams are picked to win their bowl...right on....i like people who support the SEC .... GO DAWGS!” 5:25:21 PM 12/16/03 “Arky, you don't put too much confidence in your team when they only give you one point for a win. Well, at least you picked your team to win, unlike the old KU fan. Arc, I'll bet your fiance gets tired of answering all of your questions during the games. You really should check out a book, and read up on the rules. Chili, I think Tennessee is a unanimous pick. Hope they don't let us down.” 9:48:45 PM 12/16/03 “Well at least we found out who the fans are. Those folks who are willing to stick their necks out and make mistakes in public, that's who. Cowards are the rest of ya. Cowards I say. Notice how there are no tiny-ten fans who picked. No big-east fans. No ACC fans. No pac10 fans. What league's fans are most represented here? Hmmmmmmm... Could it be the league that leads the nation in game attendance every year?” 5:50:04 AM 12/17/03 “And no Auburn fans arc, don't forget the Aubies. All Cocoa can ever say is 28-23. That's typical of an Aubie. Their whole self-image rises and falls with respect to how they do against Bama. Bama measures itself against it own standards. Yes, we sucked this year, but it's not because we were beaten by Auburn.” 6:34:11 AM 12/17/03 “I would say it's too late now for any more entries. How 'bout them Tigers. A very hungry Memphis team showed up in New Orleans to capture the victory. After 31 years of waiting for a bowl game, we get a win!” 8:18:11 AM 12/17/03 “Cocoa said he'll post his today, but will put North Texas at the bottom. I think Dunadan found himself in the same situation last year and we let him in. How do you all feel? I don't mind throwing an Aubie a bone, it's what they're used to!” 8:20:58 AM 12/17/03 “What does the average Alabama player get on his SATs? Drool. What do you get when you put 32 Arkansas cheerleaders in one room? A full set of teeth. How do you get a South Carolina cheerleader into your dorm room? Grease her hips and push. How do you get a Georgia graduate off your porch? Pay him for the pizza. How do you know if a Mississippi State football player has a girlfriend ? There is tobacco spit on both sides of his pickup. Why is the Kentucky football team like a possum? Because they play dead at home and get killed on the road. What are the longest three years of an Auburn football player's life? His freshman year. How many Florida freshmen does it take to change a light bulb? None. That's a sophomore course. Where was O. J. headed in the white Bronco? Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He knew that the police would never look at LSU for a Heisman Trophy winner. Why did Tennessee choose orange as their team color? You can wear it to the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday, and picking up trash along the highways the rest of the week.” 10:17:50 AM 12/17/03 “Not too far from the mark. Did you know that Bama has 12 NC's and 0 Heismans?” 10:38:37 AM 12/17/03 “Fine with me. Just like an Auburn fan to be late.” 10:53:52 AM 12/17/03 “Fine with me but next time we go backpacking Cocoa carries the beer.” 12:36:04 PM 12/17/03 “That'll work. In March at Sipsey he gets to carry the 30 pack. Arky, are you and Parker/30pack thinking of coming to Sipsey in March.” 1:31:48 PM 12/17/03 “arky can stay home, just make sure you send 30pack, with a 30 pack. ;-) (about staying home)” 1:34:40 PM 12/17/03 Dayhiker “It's not looking good. I was scheduled to have surgery last Monday but it got postponed until sometime in January. It will be at least 3 months before I can hike. I'll be there in spirit though.” 3:55:12 PM 12/17/03 “Sorry to hear that. Is this the hip replacement? You need to come and just hike to 1.5 miles into camp and just hangout for the weekend. You can be the "Keeper of the Cooler"” 4:02:54 PM 12/17/03 “Do you know what the difference between a plumber and a pipefitter is? The stuff under a plumber's fingernails ain't dirt..."” 4:15:01 PM 12/17/03 “You'll need more than a 30 pack if I am to be keeper of the cooler.” 5:08:11 PM 12/17/03 “That can be accomadated.” 5:17:30 PM 12/17/03 Cocoa “Get your friggin' picks in here, man. Don't pass up a chance to LORD it over us. We will wait for you. I have to admit, it's the SEC fans who have the cajones on this site, and stepped up to make their picks. I'm real surprised the Little Eleven fans whimped out. I would expect it from most conferences, but not them. I guess when you live that far north, you have to blow a lot of hot air. You have to excuse the Big Twelve fans. There aren't enough people living in the Midwest to even populate Miami, let alone find a website like this. Carry on, you football fanatics!” 6:58:38 PM 12/17/03 To Chili: “City Braces for Peach Bowl By CHIP TOWERS Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer December 9, 2003 ATLANTA (UP)- Mayor Shirley Franklin and the Atlanta City Police commented late Sunday night on Clemson University and the University of Tennessee being paired in the annual Chik-Fil-A Peach Bowl. This year the Peach Bowl will be played on January 2nd. Speaking at a youth rally, Mayor Franklin expressed concern over the schools that were chosen to be in the Peach Bowl. "Since I have been in office we have worked very closely with the City Police to handle volatile situations such as FreakNic, flag protests, and numerous civil rights marches, but that may pale in comparison to what will happen at New Years this year." Traditionally Clemson University and the University of Tennessee are well represented at bowl games in which they play. Terry Don Phillips, the Director of Athletics for Clemson, says they expect more than 30,000 fans to go to Atlanta for the game. Mike Hamilton, the Director of Athletics for Tennessee, says he guesses that about 30,000 UT fans will make the trip also. What concerns Mayor Franklin and Chief of Police Richard Pennington is 60,000+ fans that are generally perceived as "Red Necks" in one place. Chief Pennington says that they have already heard that Skoal Smokeless Tobacco, Old Crow Whiskey, Marlboro, Swisher Sweet Cigars, Dodge Ram Pickups, Pedigree Dog Food, Wrangler Blue Jeans, Utz Pork Rinds, Clear Blue Easy Home Pregnancy, and many others are sending marketing representatives for the Bowl Game. Charles Goodwin, President of the Atlanta Area Hotel Association, says that his association is concerned by the picks also. "Every Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, and Howard Johnson has been booked within 50 miles of the city. However the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, and every Hilton and Marriot have less than 20% occupancy for the same time." Thomas Gunding of KOA Camping in Georgia says that they are excited about the Clemson-UT matchup. "Everyone in the campground industry knows that Clemson and UT fans love to sleep outdoors, so we are really excited about this game." When asked if rates would increase with demand, Gunding replied "We find that the normal Clemson and UT fan will not pay more than $8 a night for a site, so we will try to keep it in that range -- oh, and pets including sheep are allowed." When asked what specific precautions Atlanta would take for the swarming orange clad fans from both schools, Chief Pennington replied "On I-75 and I-85, we will be setting up gun rack removal road blocks and marriage license inspection points leading into the city". When asked about the marriage license inspection, Pennington said "Atlanta City Statute 413-A states that no one is permitted into the City who is unlawfully married to their Sister, Brother, Mother, Father, Grandmother, Grandfather, Aunt, Uncle, or first cousin of either sex by birth." Pennington also stated that no farm animals will be allowed to stay overnight in Atlanta City Hotels, nor will overnight sleeping in pickup truck beds be permitted anywhere within the city limits. When told of these restrictions, Clemson's Terry Don Phillips and UT's Mike Hamilton said that the number of fans may very well be cut in half. Terry Don Phillips said that he was in negotiations with numerous farms in the Gwinnett County area to try to accommodate those Clemson fans traveling with animals. UT's Hamilton said that he will be in touch with Mayor Franklin to try and relax the marriage inspections. Stay tuned for further developments. ###” 9:22:45 PM 12/17/03 Here we go again “Hmmm, a Bammer calling Tennessee rednecks. That's nice.” 1:10:27 PM 12/18/03 “Lordy, I forgot that Memphis was your team, chili. That could have played the pivotal raole in my decision for that game. Although Memphis was all banged up with their #1 running back and #1 receiver out. Auburn fans can write? Oh heck yes, you got to give the handicapped a chance, but after two bowl games? I think not!” 6:02:03 AM 12/19/03 Christmas Eve, Las Vegas Bowl “Lobos headed to Las Vegas yesterday. I think they are ready to kick Oregon State's butt. 5 weeks off. The #18 defense in the country is gonna be swarming like yellowjackets and Dontrell Moore will be strutting his stuff while the massive offensive line punishes their counterparts.” 7:11:51 AM 12/19/03 “ ”7:27:38 AM 12/19/03 Jump to Page << prev
