RE: The College Football thread
My thoughts exactly, reformed lurker. Teams that play in weak conferences have an advantage over teams like Florida. Can you imagine playing in the SEC and then playing Florida State as a non-conference game? Then having to play in a conference championship game?

As if that isn't tough enough, next year Florida plays both Florida State and Miami. We're not going to rack up a long winning streak with a schedule like that.

"which team holds the second longest Division 1A winning streak in modern history?"

I believe the answer to that one is Arclite and anyone who doesn't root for Flooreedaw. LOL!

Actually that would be Michigan and OSU, correct? While we're at it, can ya break me off some stats on who leads that rivalry with the most wins...ya know, just for the Buckeyes in the room.

Ol' Woody does have ONE great distiction though...he's the only coach to ever have a facemask penalty called on him on the sidelines. LOL!

Michigan looked pretty good yestarday but it was against Penn State. Sorry Baume66. I hated to see PapaJoe go 0-4 but I'm still glad it wasn't the other way around.

Northwestern realy let me down yestarday. Peckers!

Well, three more teams ahead of Michigan lost yesterday. Bummer Washington wasn't the 4th. Maybe there is still hope for the Rose Bowl.

BTW, Toledo has the 2nd longest winning streak in Division 1A history.

Advice for Mr. Bin Laden:

Rather than throwing long bombs down field, Taliban U needs more balanced attack: More running plays and short passes. I'd recommend West Coast offense.

Nigal,
I remember Woody's tantrum. Saw it live those many years ago. It was against Clemson around 1980-82. Seems like Woody and OSU were having that same kind of year that Penn State is having this year. I guess he had to vent. Let's at least give JoePa some credit for maintaining
his cool. Do you think that Tide fans are secretly hoping he never wins another game?

RE: The College Football thread
Gosh that ol' Bobby Bowden is one swell, folksy kinda guy, dunadan. You should hear the man bubble over with praise for Wake Forest the week before they play them. Bobby has just a might-bit too much sugar coating for my taste. Steve would just tell it like he sees it and say that we should beat the tar out of a team like the Demon Deacons. Not ol' Bobby. Gee he's a swell guy. A lot of people seem to love that false humility mush-mouth nonsense.

Did he mention that Florida and Miami are like relatives when it comes to wanting to beat FSU? Or that Florida and FSU are like relatives when it comes to wanting to beat Miami? We've got quite a State rivalry here. I respect both of those teams. They both play some exciting ball.

A friend of mine says he saw an interview with Bobby B. where he says that he doesn't have anything against Steve S., but hanging around with him for any length of time drives him crazy (don't know if that was the same one you watched, dunadan). LOL- I'm sure Steve feels the same way about Bobby. Spurrier is wrapped pretty tight but thank God he's not a mush-mouth.

RE: The College Football thread
Texas was a huge disappointment, ped. I picked 'em to cover the three point spread. Ya gotta figure that Oklahoma is for real again this year.

Yeah, dunadan, it's hard not to like Bobby. It's just that false humility rubs me the wrong way. The best I ever saw at that was Vince Dooley, from jawja. My God, he was the best po' mouth that ever was. He also was a great coach. I just prefer a little more honesty in my coaches.

I don't know if I'd use the term dork, in a description of Steve, Nigal. But he sure does look funny as hell with that screwed up sour-puss expression he often wears. He actually smiled a couple of times during Saturday's game. He even complemented Rex Grossman, the quaterback, after the game. That's a big step for Steve. I've actually taked with him a couple of times. He's a real nice guy, but have you ever had a friend who was just a little too competitive? Steve is a classic perfectionist. You won't find a better quaterback coach in the country and the players love him for bringing out their best.

Gojo, you can't be a bullfrawg! Tell me it ain't so gojo.

Hey, Arc. While everyone will agree that Steve Spurrier won't win any awards for Miss Personality, he will always have a place in my heart as a 49'er.

Gonna be at the game, dunadan... cool. Great way to spend a fall Saturday. My suggestion would be to drink a lot of beer BEFORE that game.

This week's picks. Can anyone help me out here? This is a list of picks I'm looking at. Each team has to beat or cover the spread. The capitalized team is the home team. The first team listed is my pick.

Illinois giving 4 to INDIANA
MICHIGAN giving 11 to Purdue (sorry Phil)
Washington getting 11 from UCLA (kleetn's team?)
Texas A&M getting 7.5 from COLORADO
Oregon giving 13 to CALIFORNIA
South Carolina giving 8.5 to ARKANSAS (no apology bacpac)
Florida giving 21 to AUBURN

arclite, I'd take
Purdue -Michigan rarely blows anybody out and for them, two touchdowns is a blowout (Penn State excepted). Purdue's passing attack, even without Brees, will give the poor Michigan secondary trouble. Other than that I'd keep what you've got. Is this a parlay?

Buddha Bear - Nice wins this weekend. Toledo just barely hung on though. Wouldn't it be nice if the UM v. OSU matchup at the end of the season was for the Big Ten championship? I may start rooting for OSU just for that reason.

RE: The College Football thread
Parlay, Max? No entiendo. I'm not betting for money if that's what you mean. It's a fun bet with a friend.

I'm just soliciting information from folks who know more about these teams than I do. I know the SEC pretty well but even that doesn't help me sometimes. College football can be mighty unpredictable. It's so much about emotion. Maybe some of you folks have good insights as to why you think these are good or bad picks.

Thanks for the insight, Max.

Buddah, I can't find the Toledo game in my paper. They've got Akron getting 7.5 from Miami-Ohio but no Toledo game.

Dunadan, my thinking is that Colorado looked good in their last game and Texas A&M did not. But A&M has looked good this year and Colorado has not been impressive. That may have skewed the line. But I believe I may leave that one alone.

I'm seriously looking at South Carolina, Washington, Illinois, and Florida.

RE: The College Football thread
Deanoman, a few years back, a friend of mine was rubbing in the fact that we didn't get Chris Simms to come to Florida. That was the same year that Rex Grossman came down from Illinois (Indiana?). Grossman...Simms...Grossman...Simms? Hmmm, I'll take Grossman thankyouverymuch. Spurrier is the best quarterback coach in the country, so a lot of kids want to come here. Brock Berlin (Louisiana) was the top rated high school quarterback in the country. Spurrier has addmitted that he made a big mistake by not redshirting him. Now he's our second string quarterback and he probably has a better arm than Rex. But he's had one less year to learn the offense. We won't loose much if Rex gets hurt. Ingle Martin comes here next year. Another top rated HS quarterback.

I don't know, I think Miami is awfully good. They beat Florida pretty easily in last year's bowl game. This year Florida has returned some guys who were injured last year, and Rex has had one more year to learn a pretty complicated offense. Miami/Florida would be a good game.

I'm not counting out either Oklahoma (sorry dunadan) or Nebraska. Those are both two really good teams. There are a few teams that could make it to the BCS game. Florida's route is probably the toughest. South Carolina (at SC), Tennessee, Florida St., and possibly the SEC Championship game stand in their way. If they get through that, watch out! 'Course that's what I thought back in '95 when Nebraska absolutely destroyed a very good Florida team.

Thanks for helping me with my picks, Max.

How about them Auburn Tigers? Sorry, Arc. I was going to tell you that Oklahoma looked very vulnerable to me. Had Kansas scored early, (besides the field goal), I think things could have been interesting. Oklahoma's defense is for real, but their offense has some gaps in it.
However, I don't see any Big 12 team beating Oklahoma, so Florida maight not get the chance to play them. Could have been a good match up.
Congrats, Nigal. Ohio St. looked dominant early, but Wisconsin wore them down.

Haha! I never said that. They won the game but both teams l;ooked a bit ugly. Michigan does have the #3 defense vs. the run but they have a secondary that might as well be called "the sieve." Purdue was picking them apart offen and early with the pass. A W is a W.

Nigal! I think Michigan runs the table this year in the Big Ten. Michigan State might, surprisingly, be the toughest game.

And I just keep watching the higher ranked schools get picked off. I think Michigan makes a BCS bowl, but that sucks unless it's Rose. How could we win the Big Ten and not go to the Rose Bowl? What are we going to throw when we beat Ohio State? Other than marshmallows and pizza boxtops.

Anyway, good luck to all the teams out there, except Fresno State. If they are that good then Toledo should be ranked #11.

Woohoo! Congratualations BobK. Jordan-Hare was rockin' and Auburn came to play. They made Florida look like a junior college team. Auburn got it done on offense when they needed to. The Gators blew it on offense. Auburn got it done on defense when they needed to. The Gators blew it on defense.

I'm going to miss the yearly rivalry with Auburn. After next year, we rotate teams from the west except for LSU. Auburn leads Florida 40-37-2 overall. There have been some absolutely fantastic nail-biters in the series. Saturday night was no exception. Congratulations Auburn!
