RE: The College Football thread
Notre Dame won't join the big 11...the reason? They make way too much money being independent. I mean, c'mon, they have their own contract with NBC for crying out loud. Why put all that hard earned cash into a conference? And, as for the comment about banning Big 11 teams from playing ND--I bet you'd have some seriously pissed off ADs who can penicil in at least one big game a year that'll be sold out (I mean, c'mon, until recently who in their right mind would ever go see Purdue or Northwestern play football? And yet every game again ND for those two were sell outs.)

Plus, if the Big 10 picks up its toys and pouts...I'd bet the big 12 wouldn't mind lending us a few teams to play...hmmm, isn't that happening already?

Like it or not, ND will always be a football powerhouse--if not always on the field, always at the bank.

How about the Idaho Vandal? Sure they are sucking, but it is a cool mascot and there fight song is the best--but then I guess no one has heard it.

203 posts! Hey, the season is only two weeks old. Just wait.

What about Fresno St? Are they for real or has it just been a fluke? Either way they deserve some respect--so far.

Ya, ND has a contract with NBC. But a few more season the way they've been playing and that might come to an end. I remember they used to always play an incredibly tough schedule. Why not lately?

RE: The College Football thread
ooooh Sonrisas, thems fightin' words. Let's see: Nebraska (#5), Purdue (received votes), Michigan St. (rv), Texas A&M (rv), Pitt, West Virginia, USC (rv), BC (rv), Tennessee (#8), Navy, Stanford (rv)--rankings are per this week's poll. Navy is probably the only patsy in the entire schedule, and that is a game with a 50+ year tradition behind it. Nebraska, Purdue, A&M are all away and all in September...that ain't no weak schedule.

and, re: the NBC contract...it'll only go away when the ratings go down. There are enough nut jobs that either love ND or love to watch them lose to keep us on NBC forever...

Notre Dame frickin' sucks!! So what do they do in the Catholic Church??? Tell you to follow Notre Dame when you're in Sunday School at age 5? (Or at First Communion?... Or at CCD?... Or in the confessional booth?... )

I guess no other church or faith can lay claim to a football program of such magnitude. Hail Mary, full of grace...... and give us that touchdown, too!!

RE: The College Football thread
I sorta like Notre Dame. You've got to respect a team that revolutionized football with the forward pass.

Not ALL teams that were great go through cycles, Dunadan. Priceton, Harvard, and Yale have great "tradition" and have all won many "national championships." Army was the best team in the nation for years and has great football "tradition." Minnesota won three "championships" in the early days of the AP poll. That's "tradition." Some teams that weren't lucky enough to have great coaches or lots of money behind their programs in the early years are now busy making their own "traditions" in the BCS years. While some teams have fallen by the wayside and their "tradition" of greatness almost forgotten.

What I'm not crazy about is how Notre Dame gets into a bowl almost every year while teams with better records do not. I understand that it's about the money in the bowl system. I understand that Notre Dame draws big crowds. I don't have to like it. But you've got to feel sorry for the great teams of yore who are still wallowing in past glory. That makes it easier for me to swallow Notre Dame being in a bowl while teams that would like to go to a bowl, but don't have the "tradition", sit at home.

RE: The College Football thread
I've had lots of friends go to school at ND, so I've been on the campus quite a few times. What I love are all the people who pray at the grotto the night before the game - like God's gonna tip the field or something.

Then, I went to mass at that little church on campus before a game. At the end, all the alumni dressed up in their ND outfits sing the alma mater. Sorry, but we don't sing the U of M fight song in Ann Arbor churches.

And, of course, there are masses scheduled for right after the games for departing fans. Personally, I go to the bar.

There are more Catholics in the student body at the University of Michigan than there are in the student body at Notre Dame. If we're both praying, we win.

RE: The College Football thread
Well, as an ND grad, I can assure you arclite that the majority of us agree with you that ND shouldn't waltz into bowl games it has no reason being in. Actually, the school has turned down bowl games in the past--though I am sure it is more for financial reasons than football ones. Nothing is worse than watching your team get its ass handed to it (like against Colorado a couple years back). Although, I still think that last year we should have been in the Fiesta bowl...that was purely bad coaching that kept us from being competative....

As for the coach, Davie has one more year, if they aren't in contention this year, I'll bet he's gone...too many rich alumni are pissed that we aren't doing well...

Next point, it's probably not entirely Davie's fault ND is slipping in the rankings. The university has made a concerted effort to only admit football players who can make it at ND academically--which is scaring away some big time recruits (randy moss was supposed to be an ND player, but got rejected by admissions when they saw that 4 different hands wrote his application).

Finally, the Catholic thing--what's with the bashing Lisz? Plenty of my friends at ND were not Catholic and loved the football team much more than I did. And I am sure the Mormons at BYU would beg to differ about us Catholics having the better football bragging rights.

RE: The College Football thread
Hey bongofreek, usually students at a school are gonna love their football team, no?

I just don't see football teams being the path to follow to the holy land. "Praise the Lord, go kill the opponents." Seems kind contradictory. And Notre Dame does it on the biggest scale.

I don't know how to quite accurately describe my feelings about Notre Dame football. Disgusted? That's not quite right.........

I didn't know the Big 10 was again considering Notre Dame. For God's sake, keep'em OUT! And go Hawks!

oh man, duck and cover time...looks like a long season for the Irish...

Hey lizs--Not sure you've ever been to Notre Dame, if you have, I am surprised that you came away with the opinion you did. The university, though proud of its football heritage, certainly does not mix religion and football (now the alumni and those who hate ND may be a different story). I never heard an official of the university pray to "kill the opponents" in fact, I've never heard an official from the university pray for victory...

In fact, the only time I have seen religion enter into the picture is when people who dislike ND say something nasty about the university's Catholic nature. So, you tell me who's bringing "the path to the holy land" into the debate...

I am really gonna take a lickin' when Florida drops a game. But like a gopher, at least I'll stick my head up outta my hole.

Yeah, I know kleetn, I've never been overly fond of Miami. We used to play them first game of the year, every year. That was before the SEC expanded. We play them again in 2002(home) and 2003(away). We were the only team to beat them when they won their first championship in 1983. But you (with whiny voice) knooooow I've got to root for Florida teams. And I honestly beleive that Miami may be the best team in the country this year. Good luck, compadre'!

RE: The College Football thread
Ya, Mich could have put WA away. When either team was clicking they looked unstoppable. The difference was that WA hadn't plyed before and had to test things and get the kinks out against Mich. I think that they were in the game says a lot about them. It could have gone either way. Their QB is the weak link. He did a great job for his first start, but I think he held them back some.

Miami will probably beat WA this year. Hey 1 out of 4 aint bad. I guess it is their turn.

I'm rooting for Fresno St now. If they don't get full of themselves they could coast through the WAC and be undefeated.

Now that the season is back off hold?

I can?t believe those darn dogs of Washington won the game a few weeks ago! Fiddle Stix!

Michigan won handily against Western Michigan. I don?t know what emotion I?m feeling more; joy they won, or shame because they have WM on their schedule. One of the things that has always been a trademark of Michigan football has been their tough schedule but this year it is fairly soft. Oh well, a national championship is out but they can focus on the big 10 championship, which with the strength of the conference this year it will be tough.

I saw the FS Criminals were getting spanked. 8)

Normally I would have lambasted you for talking pro sports here, Nigal. But there's something so sweetly pathetic about your post (LOL).

There just doesn't seem to be any loyalty anywhere in sports these days, baume66. But I can't beleive anybody is talking that way about JoPa. My friend, who's a Rutgers fan, told me about the rumor. He has a less enthusiatic opinion of Joe. He backed it up by talking about times he felt that Joe ran up the score on a weaker opponent. Something Steve Spurrrier has been accused of in the past. Steve has the philosophy that we're going to run the offense (even with third stringers) and it's your job to stop us, not whine about it. That's a good way to give experience to your back-ups. I guess Joe feels the same way. I've always thought he was a class act.

I haven't watched a Notre Dame football game in years, so maybe the stadium's changed, but back in my bachelor days, my friends and I used to get a hoot out of the "Touchdown Jesus" that was painted over the entrance to the ND stadium! A huge painting of Jesus stood over the main entrance, with both arms extended straight up over his head, exactly like the referee signal for "touchdown." Is it still there?

Disclaimer: This is NOT intended as a flame against Notre Dame, Jesus, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, or what have you. I just always thought it was funny that the artist would choose -that- particular posture for a painting of Jesus on a footbal stadium!

Forrest-

That mural is on the library, facing the stadium. It's harder to see on TV since they added seats to the stadium (in '97, I believe). It is still there.

It's actually a beloved icon on campus--where it is also called Touchdown Jesus.

That was horrible, BobK. I have a friendly wager with a friend of mine up north. Every week, we each pick three games and try to beat the spread. Syracuse was favored by 2 points so I bet on Auburn. No brainer, right? Yep that's right, I got no brains. I also bet Oregon to cover 6 1/2 against Southern Cal. Those northwest teams always disappoint me. At least the GATORS covered 31 1/2 against a lousy Kentucky team.

I'm going kayaking this weekend. I just can't get into college football yet. The rivalries seem so meaningless.

Hey Nigal. Would you please stop talking pro ball. That's just a bunch of spoiled egotists who play a very emotionless brand of football. The crowd noise and rivalries pale in comparison to the college game, and the emotion and momentum swings are almost non-existant. Plus, it isn't worth the money to take the family to a pro game. No contest there.
