Still - I gotta make hay while the sun shines. Since I was in school (in the day of Earl Campbell), UTx hasn't spent a whole lot of time around the top.

I also have to give props to Notre Dame (even though they did darken the Cotton Bowl way back when). They have more real students and better graduation rates in their varsity programs than the vast majority of top schools.”

“I guess it would be poor form to complain about the all-SEC officiating at the Rutgers-UT game but it was bad enough that our coach broke protocol to point out that he has tape showing the quarterback breaking the plane of the goal line before he was down. He says his back made the initial contact, not his knee. That would have given us a 14 point half-time lead. They also have tape showing that the ball was spiked at one second. One of the officials called it that way before he was overruled. I’m not sure that either of those calls would have made any difference given the way Tennessee dominated the second half but there were controversial calls then too.

I’m glad the Wounded Amoebas were able to provide a show for that huge crowd of orange. It’s really hard to believe that y’all can draw over 100,000 people. I would like the record to show that I was one of the only nuts who thought it would be anything but a one-sided blowout. Anyway, it's time for Uncle Dunadan's Weekly Picks. You know, the kind you can bet on!!!

Let's start off with Miami. (The team that makes the SEC pee their pants.) Well, it seems the Hurricanes are playing another of those super tough schools on their schedule. Dunadan says that Miami will barely win this one 59-0.
Texas will have a fight on their hands, but will win by two touchdowns.
Missouri will pull the upset. Uncle Dunny can't divulge the score.
Ohio State has found a running back that won't be stopped by the likes of Northwestern. Buckeyes dominate.
Mississippi will ALMOST pull this one out. However, Grossman shines and the Gators win.
Roll Tide by ten points. Sorry, Dawgs. Gotta love that Kansas boy at the helm.
Oregon-Ariz. Who cares?
Willingham will have his crew psyched for Stanford and the Fighting Irish will remain undefeated.
Bama softened up the Razorbacks and the Vols finish them off.
Can Clemson pull it off against Daddy? Don't think so.
Cal at Washington. Ho Humm...
Kansas State fights off the altitude and wins by three over Colorado. Dunadan doesn't pick against his home state!
USC wins.
Wisconsin will get the job done against Penn St. Dunny thinks home field will be an advantage in this one.
Tech over A&M in Texas. The Pass Atack will be on target.
Iowa Hawkeyes are feeling pretty good about themselves and Purdue won't give them any reason not to feel that way.

This time last week I felt like we would scrape by Ark and then beat the crap out of Jawja. I'm really nervous about this one. Pat Dye isn't helping. For those of you who don't know Dye, he is a former Georgia All-American player, he coached at Bama under the BEAR, and is a former Auburn head coach. He is on a local sports show from time to time and was quoted with "Georgia isn't man enough to beat Bama" This later made it to the front page of the Atlanta paper. I'm sure it's all over billboards now. I love the way Franchoine understates things. A caller to his weekly radio show called in last night and asked what he thought about Coach Dye's comments. Franchoine responded with "Who's Pat Dye?" Gotta love him.”

I just cannot express that sentiment too much. Day, I almost bet Bama giving 4 until I read Dye's comment. Maybe because he played ball at jawja. Maybe because he coached at Auburn. He sure didn't do the Tide any favors by making a comment that is absolutely guaranteed to fire up those mangy mutts. ROLL TIDE!


Dunadan, the only reason that Miami doesn’t make the twelve stooges pee their pants is because they don’t dare schedule teams like that. How can you win national championships if you actually have to play more than two tough opponents a year?

Let’s check the facts-

Nebraska has played Arizona St., Troy St., Utah St., and Iowa St. The highest ranked team on that list is #18 Iowa St. How pathetic is that schedule? THEY’VE EVEN LOST TWICE AND DROPPED OUT OF THE POLLS! Gee it must be great to be a husker fan and sit through games against opponents like those every year.

Oklahoma has played Tulsa, Alabama, UTEP, and South Florida. Nobody on that schedule is ranked. And if you take away Bama, the other three teams are a combined 3-11. That’s three wins, for three teams, after five games (4 for South Florida). You’ve got to be joking. That schedule is EMBARRASSING. No wonder Oklahoma has 6 national championships with limp wristed schedules like that.

Kansas St. is 4-0 WOW! Yeah against Western Kentucky, Louisiana Munroe, Eastern Illinois and USC. How can you keep a straight face with a schedule like that?

How can those mid-west schools schedule good teams when they play in such a competitive league? From 1950 to 1995, before the big eight became the big twelve, Nebraska or Oklahoma DID NOT at least share the league title a whopping 4 times. What an exciting league. Miami, Dunadan? How could Oklahoma and Nebraska win all those championships if they actually had to play a real schedule.

As long as we don't have a playoff system, teams from non-competitive conferences will always have a better opportunity to play for "national chumpionships." Teams in non-competitive leagues have it much easier than do teams from, say, a league that has had EIGHT different teams produce FIFTEEN “national chumpionships” since 1950. Teams in non-competitive leagues have it much easier than teams from, say, a league who has produced THREE “national chumpionships”, by THREE different teams, during the PAST TEN YEARS. Leagues that have had SEVEN different teams play in their championship game tend to have a tougher time of getting to those “national chumpionship” games than do teams from leagues that only have a couple of strong teams year in and year out. In fact, even after we have a playoff system, it will be easier for the teams from weak leagues. Teams from weak leagues have a better chance of avoiding injury and are usually better able to maintain their focus for only a couple of tough games. Of course this is all just hypothetical unless you believe in… FACTS!


Sorry Dayhiker, you are so right. I was looking at the ESPN poll as I was checking team schedules on the ESPN site. As you know, the coaches poll does not rank teams on probation. Bama is certainly deserving of a ranking the way they almost beat the mighty Oklahoma Sooners (gag...choke).


OK, would somebody please tell me what happened? Being an old gummer, I took a nappy-poo at half time of the Florida/Ol’ Miss. Game. Florida was up 14 to 2 and it looked like it would be a routine win for Florida. Rex Grossman was having trouble throwing the ball accurately but Florida was running and passing well enough to move the ball. Florida’s defense was holding Mississippi well enough to have kept their offense from having scored a single point during the half. I figured I could take a sleep break, then watch the mop-up.

I woke up around 3:20 and sleepily made my way to where I had left the game on. On the way out of the bedroom I could hear what seemed to be a rather loud crowd but didn’t think anything of it considering how rabid visiting Florida fans can be. I got into my comfy chair and started watching the game again. Florida had the ball with a little over three minutes to play. Then I spotted the little rectangle in the corner of the screen that showed the score 17-14. I thought, wow Mississippi is really making it a close game. Then I noticed that the 17 was in front of Mississippi’s name. I’m thinking, how can that be? Although I was in disbelief, Florida was driving and I was sure that their losing situation would soon be rectified. Then Grossman overthrew another of his receivers, Mississippi picked off the ball, and was able to run the clock out.

The stats showed that Grossman threw 4 interceptions? This is against a team whose defense was maligned as being very porous. This is a team that allowed Vanderbilt to score 38 points. Rex Grossman was the Heisman runner-up last year, wasn’t he? Many of the ranking services had Florida as having the best backfield in the nation, didn’t they? Except for Vanderbilt, this is the easiest SEC team Florida will play this year. How could Florida not be up for this game with the meat of their SEC schedule coming up?

Since I was slumbering peacefully during the part where Mississippi was able to score 15 points. Since I was blissfully snoozing as Florida was shut out for an entire half of football and Rex Grossman threw four interceptions against a very weak defensive unit …WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?

Chili, you have reason to be very optimistic about your chances for reaching the SEC title game. Florida holds (by a wide margin) the record for the longest consecutive appearances in the top 25 rankings. Virginia Tech fans have reason to be optimistic that they will soon hold that record. My team is mired in mediocrity.

“i hear ya jgiels. arkansas has now been in the 2 longest games in college history. i can't beleive it, but we came out short this time. listening to the post game show on the radio, they asked coach nutt for his thoughts on the game. after almost a 60 seconds of silence, all he could say, in a quivering voice, was....."i can't do it" . gut wrenching loss. gotta be proud of the way they fought. gotta hand it to the vols for a hard fought victory, and a classy coach fulmer for his tribute to the hogs after the game. we need to use our "long kicker" all the time though. our #1 kicker missed 3, any one of which would have sealed the win. also i thought there were a few bad calls from the officials, but that's football. hope the guys can come back from this one. it's gotta be harder than the loss last week. we got a very tough alburn team, on the road, and will be tired from 6 OT's. Tn will have to facee GA (HAHA BAMA!), and will be tired too. our guy, #88 missed 3 catches for huge gains too! and our fullback, price, missed 2, 1 of which would have been a TD. dam dam dam. oil well.....
