Oh yeah, just write off the fact that Alabama has been on probation 4 times in the past 14 years, Alabama is one of only two teams considered for the NCAA "Death Penalty," Alabama boosters keep getting into trouble with the law, and Alabama keeps hiring dishonest coaches.

THAT'S DISGUSTING!

I've been reading that the Big Ten wants to expand to 14 or 16 teams and are targeting Rutgers among others.

It would mean a lot more money to RU because there is no Big East Network. The Big Ten would be able to have a championship game which would raise more money for the league.

I'd be supportive of the move because it will be a long time if ever before Rutgers will be competitive in Big East basketball while the football program would have immediate benefits.

The best part would be the chance to stomp on Nigal's team on an annual basis.

Southeastern Conference commissioner says that if the Big Ten expands, the SEC probably will as well, with the end result probably being the Big East isn't nearly as big as it used to be

It may work.

It's about time the Dink-10 and PAC-10 finally decided to build indoor plumbing.

I'm still waiting to see how this all might feasibly generate a playoff.

On another note:

I was at the Orange and Blue Spring game along with 51,000 other fans.

Then you read about Alabama having 91,000 fans for A-Day. You've got to admire that level of fan support.

The University of Memphis hired a consultant to get them in position to be absorbed by one of the expanding conferences.

I don't think the SEC would even stop to look at them, but the Big 10 might give them a look.

Considering Florida had 3, Oklahoma had 3, and Alabama had 2, Rutgers had quite an accomplishment this year.

Schiano has been doing a GREAT job of trying to build the Rutgers football program in a hostile environment.

The Big East got demolished when BC left. Virginia Tech and Miami could make a good case for the ACC, but BC had no business bailing.

And the Big East should have kicked ND out of their basketball conference long ago.

But I digress.

The SEC may look to expand if the dink-10 decides to go to 16 teams. The ACC may have to worry about getting raided. Georgia Tech used to be in the SEC. FSU would have been an obvious addition had they not been scared. A case could be made for Miami and USF. Lesser football programs would just dilute quality.

But I don't know enough about the monetary consequences to get out my crystal ball. I'll just have to wait and see. Speculating is a waste of my time.

Meanwhile... I'm already stocking up on chips, dip, ribs, and tea, in anticipation of October 2. That should be one of the great TV events of the season... be there or be square!

We've chatted about realignment in the office. The interesting thing if you put say GT and FSU in the conference, how do you balance the divisions? Do Vandy and UK slide over to the West? If you add Texas and A&M, do Auburn and Alabama slide to the east?

Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Kentucky and South Carolina in the East.

Auburn, Alabama, Vandy, Arkansas, LSU and Ole Miss and Miss State in the West.

Cherokee! Ahha! I wondered where your dark complexion came from. You've mentioned that before but I'm absent-minded. What was my name?

When we did the Tail of the Dragon, I saw a family that looked as if they could be related to you. Despite the obvious dig here, it makes sense that many people from that area would be part Cherokee.

Report: Rutgers offered a spot in Big 10

... along with Notre Dame, Missouri, and Nebraska.

I've read that RU will have to pay a $5 million bailout fee to the Big East. Still, we'd be foolish not to accept.

Jeez Dunadan - If this comes to pass, what becomes of the Big 12?
Rev Truth V Wicked

According to sports radio here in Jackson, the "buy out" might be $5M, but the payoff is $10M per year.

Even the Rutgers grads can work out that math.

If the Big 12 becomes the Big 16, I think the SEC and PAC 10 have to follow suite.

The Big East, the Big 10 and the Mountain West could be in trouble.

I don't expect that the other conferences are sitting around doing nothing. There could well have already been discussions between a few of the larger conferences.

A handful of super-conferences, each with their own championship could well become a national playoff.

I wish I could care more about whether the Big 12 morphs into anything else. Since the trend towards super-conferences began it is so obviously about nothing more than $$$$$$$$$$! The SEC is way too big. The Big Ten is the Big Eleven and will probably retain the name no matter how many teams they bring into their conference because they did a market study that says that people will like it better that way. KU gets a better shot at a bowl game for two years and then they have to play Texas and Oklahoma the other two years. Who thought that one up? Anytime you have conference teams that don't play each other each season, that is a conference that was created solely for the almighty dollar.
It has nothing at all to do with sports.

Looks like OU, OSU, Texas and Texas A&M are poised to go the the Pac 10 as well.

I am sure Mizzo will bolt to the Big 10.

So, the Big 12 is about to fold and the SEC now has to figure out if they can find any turf to expand to.

If the Big 10 and the Pac 10 go to 16 team leagues, I think the SEC has to follow suite.

If you want to expand your market, where would you look?

Louisville? Missouri (if the Big 10 passes them up?). Va Tech? West Virginia?

I don't see Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech or Clemson doing much to expand the media market.
chili36

Because the new markets picked up by the Pac 10 and Big 10 may make it alot harder to continue to be the big dog when the SEC has to re-up their existing contract.

Right now, they are golden. The problem comes from what may, or may not be, over the horizon.

The University of Southern California has received a two-year bowl ban and a sharp loss of football scholarships in a report on the NCAA's four-year investigation of the school.

The NCAA cited USC for a lack of institutional control Thursday in its long-awaited report, which detailed numerous violations primarily involving Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush and men's basketball player O.J. Mayo.

NCAA report
The NCAA released a 67-page report detailing its findings in an investigation of the USC athletic program. Read it here. Report.

The violations, which span almost four years, primarily involved "agent and amateurism issues for a former football student-athlete and a former men's basketball student-athlete," the NCAA wrote in its report.

The NCAA found that Bush was ineligible beginning at least by December 2004, a ruling that could open discussion on the revocation of his Heisman Trophy. Members of the Heisman Trophy Trust have said they might review Bush's award if he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

"The Heisman Trophy Trust will have a comment at the appropriate time," the group said in a statement. "Until that time, it will have no comment."

The NCAA also ordered USC to vacate every victory in which Bush participated while ineligible. USC beat Oklahoma in the BCS championship game on Jan. 4, 2005, and won 12 games during Bush's Heisman-winning 2005 season, which ended with a loss to Texas in the Rose Bowl.
