RA, can't you accept the fact that UF has the best program in the history of college football?

Never mind they used to be worse than Kentucky in the SEC, Florida and all THINGS Florida border on god status now.

The Alabama fans must be pissed that their place on the throne has been taken.

“Ok, maybe i made a slight mistake with your semantics…”

With MY semantics, roamaround? Most folks lie about their infallibility or just hope nobody notices their mistakes. So maybe I should be impressed when you make any public admission of fallibility. But you could do better.

“The better is the enemy of the good.”
Voltaire

Do you understand that the statement:

“but I think this may be one of Florida's best defenses... ever.”

Is a personal observation with a disclaimer? You understand that this is not a declarative statement about Florida having the very best defense in the country?

Regarding this quote:

“Which means they're going to be one of the best defenses nationally.”

You do understand that this is not a declarative statement about Florida having THE BEST defense in the nation because it clearly says “ONE OF THE BEST”?

What we are dealing with here is not MY semantics. We are clearly dealing with a semantic misinterpretation of the concept between one of the best and the absolute best.

I have not dealt in absolutes. I have not declared Florida’s defense to be THE BEST.

To find equality between the concepts I state and your interpretation of those concepts is indeed absurd.

But I suppose that’s why the obnoxious sports fan exists. Many folks (especially sports fans) seem to have a wonderful capacity for logical fallacy based on their own emotional viewpoints.

Not that I’m making a declarative statement absolutely saying that’s what you are doing, roamaround. It’s just a possibility for further investigation.

“All the pundits ideas and rankings mean nothing - it's all based on conjecture and speculation”

Not putting much stock in most pundits myself, I understand the concept you’re expressing here. However many of those ideas and rankings ARE based on more than conjecture and speculation. They are based on observed past performances and statistical analysis. It’s important to discriminate the level of expertise and the past statistical performance of sources we quote or criticize.

So I disagree with your statement that “All the pundits ideas and rankings mean nothing…”

I would state that in all likelihood SOME of those ideas probably mean nothing. I would also state that in all likelihood SOME of those ideas are worth examining.

Too many people in the world spend energy dismissing ideas that don’t agree with their preconceived ideas and accepting ideas that agree with their preconceived ideas. It’s a poor thinker who ignores the scientific method of inquiry.

You’ll also notice that none of those pundit statements you reference make the declarative statement that Florida’s defense is the best in the nation. I don’t think that’s an example of semantics either.

AH HA!

Note the sneaky way that chili tries to create tension between Alabama fans and Florida fans with his statement. His is a not so subtle way to deflect his frustration with the performance of his pathetic team and pathologically lying coach.

The fact is:

Florida will be on Tennessee like Michael Jackson on a Cub Scout!

I wonder if Kiffin really likes Crompton or knows he really doesn't have anyone else?

From the press conference:

On quarterback Jonathan Crompton's confidence:

"We need him to play well, and I need to do a better job. I need to help him with better play calls and do a better job of managing the game for him to get him rolling a little bit, to get his confidence back. He played one game that wasn't very good, and he played one game that was almost perfect. We want him to play like the first game. One game will never define a player, and one game will never define us as a team. We'll make an assessment after a number of games, where we are as individuals and where we are as a team.

"Crompton's our quarterback. We have a lot faith in him. Like I said, I need to do a better job and we need to do a better job around him. We had a number of guys injured last week, so it's tough to be in rhythm when a lot of your receivers are banged up or are coming back from injuries after being out a number of weeks, especially your go-to receivers. We'll do a better job this week in practice with our timing and passing game, and I think that will help him Saturday."

Oh...in the "almost perfect game"...against Western Kentucky....he threw two picks.

Yessir, that had me slack jawed. More slack jawed than normal.

Crompton was highly ranked and highly recruited. Tennessee has talent. Neyland is one heck of a home field advantage. UCLA is not that good.

It all added up to a big saaaay what? for me. I bet that game and was only 1-2 against the spread this past week.

The bottom 10
1. Miami (Ohio) 0-2 "Dirty Dancing": The RedHawks haven't registered a point on offense so far this season and have been outscored 90-0. Doubt they are having the time of their lives.
2. Western Kentucky 0-2 "The Outsiders": Darrell, Soda, Ponyboy and the rest of the gang were outsiders. Newbie WKU is getting the same treatment from the FBS establishment.
3. Ball State 0-2 "Red Dawn": After losing to Football Championship Subdivision school New Hampshire, the Cardinals definitely aren't showing the same kind of fight Jed and the Wolverines did.
4. Rice 0-2 "To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar": "Attitude is everything" was the tagline of a title that demanded inclusion. The Owls' D, which is giving up 49.5 points per game, needs a new attitude.
5. Colorado 0-2 "Point Break": Bodhi craved 100 percent pure adrenaline. The Buffs could use some of that after getting drilled in Toledo put them on their backs.
6. Tulane 0-2 "Road House": How did it feel to get bounced from the Double Deuce by Dalton? Ask the Green Wave. They take a beating almost every Saturday.
7. New Mexico 0-2 "Next Of Kin": New Mexico State won its way off the Bottom 10, but no need for revenge in the Land of Disenchantment. The Lobos are ready to step into the Aggies' place.
8. Temple 0-1 "City of Joy": Why was the City of Brotherly Love transformed into the City of Joy last week? Well, the Owls had a bye week.
9. Eastern Michigan 0-2 "Steel Dawn": Nomad was a desert warrior, carving the future with his sword. The Eagles tried to carve a new future at Northwestern, but fell just short and remain in the Bottom 10 desert.
10. Virginia 0-2 "Youngblood": Al Groh appears to be on thin ice in Charlottesville. If the Cavs don't turn things around, a hot new coaching prospect could be skating into town after 2009.

I picked up this gem in the paper today:

“They’re No. 1 in the country, most talented team in the country, probably the most talented team ever to play.”

Lane Kiffin

What kind of fool says that Florida is the best college football team ever to play? Don’t yall think it’s too early in the season to be making declarative statements such as that?

Only a dumbass Tennessee guy thinks in absolutes like that.

It's gonna be an all time low point for the Vols. I can't believe Kiffin said that in the press. IT's one thing to give FL credit - a lot even - they're clearly a good team - but christonacracker - to crown them all time champs the week your gonna play them?

Fire Kiffin - on grounds he's a total moron.
RoamAround
3:53:32 PM
9/17/09

Actually, Roam, that tactic used to work really well for Georgia's Vince Dooley.

Many of the pundits have Florida beating the spread (29.5). Now that's where I agree with your “it's all based on conjecture and speculation” quote.

Who the heck knows?

Tennessee’s defense is pretty good and Florida’s offense took a couple of series to get in sync against Troy. If Florida has trouble getting moving early, it will give the VOLS confidence on defense.

I’m pretty comfortable believing that Tennessee will have trouble moving the ball against Florida’s defense but Kiffin may have a great ball control game plan. Maybe Crompton has a lot of character and comes back with guns blazing for this game.

It is a rivalry game and good players tend to get up for rivalries and for good teams.

Tennessee is building for the future. All the pressure is on Florida to win big. Tennessee really has nothing to lose and can go out and play loose. Those are powerful psych factors in Tennessee’s favor.

Then there’s the fact that Florida is three deep with amazing talent. Florida may be the best conditioned team in college football with Mickey Mariotti working them to death in the offseason. Florida could possibly be the fastest team in the country. And Florida has got the biggest offensive line of all the top ranked teams.

Oh yeah, and then there’s some dude named Tebow. He probably won’t be showing up at chili’s doorstep with a plastic sheet, a can of Crisco, and a smile on his face.. .

…but chili probably wishes he would. Oh well, he'll just have to wait for the family reunion.
