When Florida had it's HUGE cheating scandal back in the 80's, where Galen Hall was forced to resign (and was unabashedly scooped up by Penn. St. and the dink-10), the MAJOR violations mostly concerned the coaches buying cheeseburgers for the players on road trip games.

I'm torn on Bama this year. We have one, unexpected great year and the loonies come out of the woodwork like we've been doing this for the last decade. Uhh, we've sucked for much of the last decade. We lose 3 on the OL, 2 TE's, TB, and QB on O. We have a tough schedule, but the LSU, Ole Miss, and VT games should be huge. We're opening in the Georgia Dome again against VT. The last time we played them was about 97 in the Music City Bowl. They spanked us big time.

All that said and looking at our schedule, I see at least 10 wins.”

Get used to it boys. I don’t expect our defense to fold like Ohio State’s “stellar” defenses did.

Everyone seems to be excited about Tebow returning.

Me? I’m excited that all 22 first and second string defenders are returning along with some of the past recruits looking to take their jobs. You know, the same young defense that held an Oklahoma team that hadn’t scored less than 45 points in a game all year, and averaged over 51 points per game, to 14 points. A young defense that held Oklahoma, a team that set the NCAA season scoring record of 702 points, to 14 points. A young defense that held Oklahoma, a team that averaged over 198 rushing yards per game, to 107 yards rushing. A young defense that held Oklahoma, a team that averaged over 349 yards per game, to 256 yards.

A "traditionally" tough Florida defense that Dayhiker was foolish enough to question before they held Alabama to a total of 1 yard in the fourth quarter of the SEC Championship Game.

A defense that was still mostly underclassmen last year. That’s what I’m waiting to see.




Are you coming down for the game this year, chili? I can carry your sorry ass out of the stadium after you faint when your sorry team gets their sorry asses kicked.

If you had a poll vote, Dayhiker, I’d think you the most intelligent gentleman in the world. But even without a poll vote you’re absolutely correct. Tebow wins the Heisman again and Florida wins the Mythical National Championship again. It’s a foregone conclusion.

Tebow is quite the class act theXL. Danny Wuerffel is too. Emmitt Smith is too. Between the three of them, it makes up for some of the less savory characters we’ve had like those who seem to find their way to every institution. And then there are those institutions that are famous for the unsavory behavior of their players, especially those thugs at Michigan who are always fighting with their hockey players.

You’ve always got to feel good when a role model like Tebow comes to your school. He’s a hell of a football player but an even better human being.

And as far as your other post, it really surprised me to read the Oklahoma fan sites where they said they hated to root for the other teams in their conference. I root for EVERY SEC team against ANY non-conference opponent. I don’t understand those fans that say they like competition but don’t feel some measure of respect and brotherhood for the other teams in their own conference. Heck, Radagast was teasing me because I was wearing Georgia colors while riding around New England during Laconia. What can I say? I like red and black.

It doesn’t make sense not to root for the other teams in your own conference on a lot of levels. I even root for FSU to go undefeated before we play them. It doesn’t do my team any good in the polls to beat a team with a mediocre record. Some of those Florida/FSU games in the 90s brought big national attention to both schools. Beating an undefeated team only helps my team. And winning all those bowl games only helps my conference, which helps my team with bowl money and recruiting. I really don’t get how some folks think.

A good fan has respect for his opponent.

In my previous post I was going to say something about you having been reamed so often by big beefy OSU linemen that boinking you is like sticking my pinky finger in a 50 gallon drum but that would have been totally uncalled for. By gosh! Could you actually imagine me saying something like that?

Bama loosing to Utah was sad. There was no glee in my house. Bama played good ball last year and I hated to see them go down like that. Some of my favorite SEC Championship memories are of Florida/Bama. And the game announcers were all talking about how the SEC Championship game was one of the great games of 2008. Those are the battles I relish no matter how much nonsense I spew before and afterwords.

Dayhiker, has it been hard to root for UT because of the alleged tattling, or what? I used to despise Georgia but have overcome that because we spank them like drunken monkeys every year now. Winning heals a lot of pain.

This year, Florida will will finally have an all-time winning record against Tennessee. I miss those ferocious UT battles but I'm looking forward to that stat.

My prediction: It's gonna get ugly for the Florida/UT game in The Swamp this year, real ugly. Kiffin has no fans in Gainesville.

I have been reading some of the preseason magazines. I have read Lindy’s, Sporting News, Athlon, and the most accurate magazine over the past 10 years (I know that because he keeps saying so over and over throughout his magazine), Phil Steele’s. I hope some of you folks have read Street and Smith’s, Game Plan, Preview Sports, and Jim Fiest’s, to fill in the gaps. I don’t think Sports Illustrated and ESPN Magazine come out until later.


After 2006 & 2007 I would have expected better truth in journalism. Old habits die hard and, with journalists, stuck-on-stupid is the habit.

Now, I like Kirk Herbstreit. He’s usually very knowledgeable and insightful. He usually does his homework and is well informed. So how can I explain this:

“Herbstreit insists the Big Ten is just as fast at the skill positions as any other conference. The difference comes on the defensive line, where elite teams in the South tend to produce faster linemen than the Midwest. “When you look at the defensive line and linebackers in the SEC, they’re trimmer and faster,” Herbstreit said.”

For years we’ve heard journalists pontificate about the slower, bigger, Big Ten power vs. the speedy, smaller, SEC finesse. Am I wrong to believe that 2006 & 2007 should have put that myth to rest once and for all?

According to Terrance Cody (Alabama’s nose guard) himself, he has wasted away from last year’s weight of 365lbs to around 350lbs. That still seems pretty big to me. Those Big Ten guys must be monsters. Wait… According to the preseason magazine projected lineups:


Florida has 5 defensive tackles, in their three-deep rotation, that weigh over 300 lbs.

Ohio St. has one guy at exactly 300 lbs in their two-deep.
Penn St. has three guys over 300 lbs in their two-deep.
Michigan has two guys over 300 lbs in their two-deep.

Florida has a 290lb defensive end. Carlos Dunlap was MVP of the BCS Championship last year. This year he may be a backup. Alabama has a 315lb DE.

Florida’s middle backer, Brandon Spikes, is 6’-3”, 258lbs.

Ohio St.’s biggest linebacker is 234lbs
Penn. St.’s biggest linebacker is 236lbs
Michigan’s biggest linebacker is 240lbs

Former Vols backup QB Cooter arrested for burglary

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Former Tennessee backup quarterback Jim "Bob" Cooter was arrested on June 27 for a burglary in the Fort Sanders neighborhood.

Cooter, 24, of Indianapolis, Indiana, is charged with aggravated burglary.

He was arrested at 2:40 a.m. that Saturday at an apartment complex at 2201 Franklin Station Way.

A woman called 911 to report that someone had broken into her home. When police arrived, they heard the woman scream for someone to get out of her room.

As officers broke through the door, the woman ran from the bedroom.

Officers found Cooter lying in the bed. That's where he was arrested.

The woman said Cooter had broken in through a bedroom window. Officers found the screens of both windows had been removed.

While he played for Tennessee, Cooter was arrested and charged with DUI in June 2006, earning him a team suspension.

In 2007, Cooter was a graduate assistant on the Tennessee staff.”
