I love the talk about how Utah should be considered for a National Championship. And why not? They are undefeated and we do not have a playoff.

At least the current system beats the heck out of the “traditional” AP poll system. This is the same “traditional” system that some college football programs point to with pride. How weak is that? How pathetic!


Because there was no SEC Championship Game, here’s how the current season would have played out under that system before 1966:

Alabama is the National Champion!

National Champions were determined by who was ranked #1 in the AP before the bowls.




Here’s a look at how the current season would have played out under that system after 1966 but before the BCS:

Alabama would have won the SEC. Alabama wouldn’t have played Florida because there was no SEC Championship Game. Alabama would have gone to the Sugar Bowl because they had the better SEC record.

Oklahoma would have won the Big-8 because there was no Big-12 (nor a Big-12 playoff). Oklahoma would have gone to the Orange Bowl.

Texas Tech would have won the Southwest Conference and gone to the Cotton Bowl.

Ohio St. would have won the Big-10 because Penn. St. had not joined the Big-10. Ohio St. would have gone to the Rose Bowl.

USC won the Pac-10 and would have gone to the Rose Bowl.


It may have depended on which bowls Texas, Florida, and Penn. St. ended up in as to determining the champion.

It would not have mattered at all if Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, USC, or Penn. St. had won their bowl games. If Alabama won their game against Utah, Alabama would have won another Mythical National Championship by virtue of their undefeated record.

There would still have been absolutely no way to accurately determine a National Champion since all the top ranked teams would have been split up.


The BCS may be bad, and has been bad every year, but thank God we’re not still dealing with the AP polls picking a champion. That was always a “traditional” joke.


Florida/Oklahoma is still not the definitive answer. We need a playoff.

I think there is less chance for one game bowl upsets when teams know they have a chance to advance in a playoff.”

One day the BCS will realize just how overrated the Big 10 and 12 conferences are..

Shudda been USC and Florida last night..

It's easy to run up 60 points against a bunch of porous defenses, Stoopes found out how hard it is to do it against a real defense....

Not that it really matters, I spent most of 'bowl season' on the trail...

Nope, I’m too busy basking in the glory of our Mythical National Championship to bloviate or pontificate.

As you may imagine, I was up way past my bedtime last night. I watched every glorious post-game show they had. I may even buy the DVD like I did for the 2006 game. I haven’t got tired of watching Ohio State get squashed on that game replay. I probably never will.

But let me just make a few kind comments for the little people out there:


Thanks, Nigal. Maybe someday your team will play in a bowl. Granted, it will probably be a second-tier bowl, but your little team needs to start somewhere.

I’m hoping Florida finally gets to meet USC in the title game next year. If USC can avoid those ridiculous letdowns, it’s a distinct possibility. I think that game would generate a lot of interest.

Rutgers may very well be favored to win the Big East next year.

Dunadan, I hope you put your money where your mouth is and contribute to the Utah legal fund that may be needed to prosecute the BCS for an anti-trust action. We all know we need a playoff.

I hope NC State is even better next year.

I hope to see Alabama in the SEC Game next year for their annual whipping. Thanks for not cooking ribs last night, dayhiker.

Sorry folks, but Florida’s defense should be MUCH better next year. We’ve been recruiting some great D-linemen over the past few years. Florida is loaded with young 4 and 5 star tackles and ends. This year’s recruiting class is no different. We’ve also been recruiting some great d-backs. Ahmad Black, the guy who made that spectacular interception, was our second-string safety and only got the job after our starter got injured. We’ll lose Spikes and that may be all. Our defense was still very young this year although not as young as last year.

I’ll bet every Alabama fan is glad they didn’t have to play Florida with a healthy Percy Harvin. He was only about 90 percent last night and he got 171 total yards while averaging 13.5 yards per rush. It’ll be hard to replace Harvin (if he leaves early) but both Demps and Rainey are faster than Harvin and were only freshmen this year. We’ve also got a couple of big backs who are fast.

Florida’s loaded with receivers. So what else is new? Aaron Hernandez returns as tight end. That’s huge.

We’ve been recruiting highly-rated O-linemen for the past few top-10 classes. If they gel early in the year, Florida will be very good, very big, and very deep on the O-line next year.

Tebow? I expect Tim Tebow to return. He loves the college experience and he loves being a Gator. Well, who wouldn’t want to be a Gator? Florida is the best program in the nation.


Some of the announcers mentioned that Florida would be the 2009 preseason #1 if Tebow returns. They also said that Florida should be better in 2009. We shall see.

I thought that Florida would challenge for the MNC in 2009. The hard part now will be maintaining that mental intensity. Florida’s the toughest team in the nation. I’m hoping Meyer can motivate them for back-to-back wins.

I think Utah is the only other team besides Florida with a legit claim on #1. The fact that they had a slightly better margin over Alabama than Florida even though Florida had a home game v. Alabama is interesting.

I'm a partisan of UT, but they needed a more decisive win over Ohio State to make the claim.

I don't see a legit case for USC as #1. Compare who they played vs. who Utah played and Utah's bowl win over Alabama vs. USC's bowl win over Penn State and there is no reason to discount the fact Utah went undefeated, while USC lost to a team Utah beat (though Utah had home field and USC didn't).

If you are going to write off USC's loss, you still have to put them head to head with Florida and the schedules just don't compare.

And I'll join Mike in ranting against the doofus who voted USC #1 - its probably what pushed UT back to #4 in the AP.”

Their offenses were exposed as not being able to score against anything other then the seives that they call defenses in the Big 12. BEFORE the OK-FLA game thay had scores on average almost 10 fewer ppg then they had in the regular season... That number is now even higher...

I will reserve judgement on UTAH as I'm still not sure were they should be ranked, but USC - Fla would have been the game..

TX barely beat an overrated OSU team.. Scoring only 24 points, the least that they scored all year..

TT Lost to Ol MIss scoring 34 points, the only time they scored less was in their loss to OK (21). In contrast Ol Miss scored more points in a game only once.

Kansas won their bowl agianst Minn (Big 10)
Missourri Beat N.W. (Big 10.. notice a pattern?).

Ok.S.U lost to Oregon, scoring 31 points well below their average...

Nebraska beat clemson scoring 26 points, their second lowest point total all year..

and OK only got 14 against Fla, 21 POINTS LOWER THEN THEIR PREVIOUS LOW..

In looking at the Big 12 opponnents in the the bowl games, while Fla did score below its average, most of the other teams scored above their season averages.

So pretty much the Big 12 Offensives and all of their huge numbers got exposed as the shams that they really were..

Reminds me of watching Loyala Marymount play basketball when they had Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble...

Come to think of it, i'm beginning to think Tim Tebow got screwed in the Heisman Balloting.. Imagine his numbers had he played against tha Patsies that the Big 12 QB's got to play against...

While these don't represent the greatest collection of teams in the country, the Big East went 4-1 not including Pitt and the MWC went 3-1 in bowl games...

Go down the list of Bowl Teams and ask yourself, if given a neutral site,you had to bet on USC against all of them who would you bet..

I would take USC in every game except possibly FLA... and if you gave me USC and 3 I would take SC for sure.. Their defense is just too good..
