Arc and Day. I'm digging it. Must be tough to cheer for teams with winning records and tradition. Kinda' like being a KU basketball fan.

man you just gotta love - or hate - one or t'other - the "Old Ball Coach". i was just reading some espn guy and found this quote from ole Spurrier talking about his succes last Saturday against TN.

Steve Spurrier (26), South Carolina. Nobody has stuck the needle into opponents with greater frequency or more painful precision than the Head Ball Coach, who has run it up and laughed about it afterward. He hasn't had many opportunities to make jokes at the losers' expense with the Gamecocks, but Spurrier got in his shot the day after they whipped Tennessee 27-6 last weekend, kicking Smokey while he was down: "The Tennessee band was there last night, weren't they?" Spurrier asked, according to The (Columbia, S.C.) State. "I'm used to hearing 'Rocky Top' about 10 times. Did they play it at all? I can't remember any of it. Usually you hear that song, maybe they only play it after they score, I don't know. Their crowd was very quiet last night."

I mean, DAM!

What do you mean, Dunadan? It's hard to root for KU basketball?

THAT'S THE SPIRIT, DAYHIKER!

Yeah, damn, Mike. Spurrier has a different type of humor. I know, because I love it!

I've been at Florida Field when the Tennessee band played Rocky Top over and over. It may have been fun for yall. From what I've heard from our fans, and fans from other universities, some folks have thought it was obnoxiously rude. I guess it all depends on perception.

When a sports pundit makes his opinion known, they too often stir the pot. Don't you hate when that happens?

I once read an Atlanta Journal sports guy rant about Spurrier insulting Ray Goff after Spurrier made a comment asking why Georgia couldn't beat Florida when they had all that talent. He was making a jab at the inaccuracy of the media pundits who rank recruiting classes. It's all about perception.

Spurrier messed with the media and they hated him for it.

We had a SPIRITED discussion about "running up the score" a while back. At the time, journalists were printing stories, and talking heads were in full rant mode, about coaches like Spurrier "running up the score."

Now I'm hearing them call high scoring games, "Style Points." Because they know that, in our current system, scoring lots of points usually gets you better rankings.

During the Florida=Georgia game they even acknowledged that it was good practice for the backups as we scored a late touchdown.

I was making those points years ago. But certain people, from certain universities, who shall remain nameless lest this conversation degenerate into a hellish morass, ignored those valid points.

One thing about Spurrier though - he may talk a lot of 'trash' - but generally he only does it after the fact. I guess I gotta respect the wit and the timeliness of it if nothing else. He usually at least has the honesty to admit when his teams get outplayed, he's just much less flambouyant about it when he's on the low end of the scoreboard.

Fulmer's been a great coach but for whatever reason has lost his touch at UT. Sometimes, it's time for a change.”

That's what I've always liked about him, Mike. I find his honesty refreshing in a politically correct profession.

I mean, how many times, during that long run when FSU was great, did we listen to Bobby Bowden drawl, "We'll have to prepare real hard for a great Duke team."

Get me a barf bag.

Spurrier did have a bit of fun with UT, Mike. I think you're a good sport because, when Spurrier beat us in 2005, he made some comments and I really had to bite my tongue before I lightened up and laughed.

I hope my sense of humor would stand the test of time being on the receiving end of Spurrier's wit.

Tennessee's gonna rise again. Hopefully, by then, the all-time Florida Tennessee rivalry won't be 24-19. Hopefully it will be 30-19.

Spurrier had some comments about Fulmer after the firing too.

arc - any comment about Meyer in the UGA game? I've only heard about it, but what I've read is that he called 2 TO's late to prolong the game then brushed off the handshake with Richt. Supposedly they actually shook hands, but Meyer barely slowed down as he strolled past. Any truth to that?

I didn't get a good look at the actual exchange after the game, but many of them are brusque anyway. The pre-game greeting looked very friendly.

I did see a Florida player refuse to help Stafford up off the ground. I didn’t think that was very classy.

And Meyer called two time-outs at the end. He said he was trying to get more plays in specifically to give Emmanuel Moody (running back) more runs. I didn’t understand that comment. Nobody seems to be buying it. The players seemed to enjoy the time outs. But I wonder what message are you sending to your players? I wouldn’t have done it, but I’m not the judge.

How about these two quotes from this week:

"When I wake up in the morning and I turn that film on, it’s like reading a book, and it’s exciting. I don’t read books, but if I read books, it would be like reading a book." - Les Miles, Bama/LSU game week press conference 11/08

He's probably 16, 17 years there, probably long enough. It wasn't working very well, so I think everybody understands when it starts going bad, they've gotta make changes," Spurrier told The State.
"But congratulate him on hitting that lottery ticket. That's a big ticket he got," Spurrier said, adding, "I don't know whether to feel sorry for coach or congratulate him for the biggest buyout in the history of college football. He got the best deal ever, I think."
- Steve Spurrier on Fulmer getting fired.

Trevor has been doing much better but still hasn't been released from St. Jude's yet. We did sneek in two RV campouts the last two weekends I was off though. We camped at Hugh White State Park in Grenada, MS and last week camped on the Pearl River northeast of Jackson, MS. He got to ride his bike, walk his dog, roast hot dogs and smores in the campfire. I'd much rather be camped in the Sipsey or trecking up above treeline but, we are making baby steps to his recovery. I want that boy back that last year could kayak 12 miles in an afternoon and climbed the highest mountain in Colorado. His spirit is incredible, through all his suffering he never looked back. As far as me, I'm tired really tired, we all are. 2008 has been one hell of a year from fighing cancer to hurricanes it hasn't let up. The house is still marginal as a living space post Gustav. I should be mudding sheetrock right now, but needed a diversion. Soon we will be back with you guys.

Dayhiker, I was glad that Bama remains undefeated.

It was cool that the announcers repeated that bit about Bama not being ranked #1 in the regular season for 28 or 29 years. That gives the rest of us a heads-up to support you folks.

Since 1984, Florida has been ranked #1 a number of times during the season. I can give you advice on how to handle the emotions you’re going through. If you need help on how to handle TWO weeks as #1, give me a call, I’m here for ya.

Bama remains undefeated until they meet someone with an offense. Florida should destroy them in the SEC Championship - they're not starting a freshman 3rd-string QB.

It would have been nice to see JOPA go out in style, 1984. Man, he's looking old in those press conferences. It's a shame. He's such a great guy and such good friends with Steve Spurrier.

Toejam, please don't supply any bulletin board material. Many of the media talking heads are acting like Florida is going to roll over Bama on their way to the MNC.

If Saban can't get his players motivated by that, he's no motivator. But he is a motivator. So we don't need to provide motivational motivation to a motivator.

Mrs./Mr. Opie. Why don't we do lunch (or dinner) while we're in Atlanta? It's not a lock yet, but I should be able to get tickets. I don't have my ego tied into my football team so, win or lose, I'll be having fun (although my probability of fun increases related to how well my team plays). It should be a great game between great teams.

Having to take LSU to OT should be enough bulletin board material already! There are 3 teams in the Big 12 that would score more points on Bama than they could possibly match. Florida won't have any problems.

You’ve really got to keep your eyes on Florida because they have such incredible team speed.

There’s a break in the game so I turn to a different channel. I turn back and the score is 7 nothing. I got to see the replay of the Spikes interception return for a touchdown.

Shortly thereafter there’s a break in the game. I turn the channel. I turn back and it’s 14 nothing. I got to watch the replay of Percy Harvin running for a score.

Just a short time later there’s a break in the game so I turn the channel. I turn back and its 20 nothing. Thank God they overruled that touchdown after the fumble recovery so I could see Tebow punch it in to make the score 21-0 in the first quarter.

DANG THESE BOYS ARE FAST!
