Man, now my stomach seriously hurts. Pink, haven’t you been around here a while? I do my best obnoxious butthead shtick here every year. It’s sort of an id response to the obnoxiousness I see in the media and many sports fans. I keep telling myself I’ll tone it down this year, but I keep finding reasons to dial up and go waaaaay over the top. This year it’s Buddha Bear’s turn. The guy is such a poor sport I can’t help pounding him. Chili, snap out of that funk, son. UCLA looked pretty good. We know that they have great coaches. I’m just surprised at how quickly they’ve been able to improve on an already decent UCLA team. And how about Craft? I never would have thought he’d look so good in the second half. Nothing before the game, or during the first half, prepared us for what he did in the second half.

There is truth to what longlosthiker said last year. It’s tough to travel all the way across country and play a decent team in their home. I remember when we pounded USC here. We were stronger the next year but we traveled to LALA land and had to settle for a tie with them.

You knew Tennessee was picked to finish behind Jawja and Florida in the east this year. That’s what the pundits said last year and look who played in the SEC Championship Game for the right to pound those suck-butt losers from The Ohio State.

You seem to think that winning equates to "history" and "tradition.". Rutgers and Princeton fans would disagree that they have no “history.” Lehigh and Lafayette fans would disagree that they have no “history.”

Much like the dink 10, we all know that the SEC did not play everyone in the conference and did not have a playoff before 1992. SEC championships can always be questioned before 1992 when the championship made sure the SEC title was decided on the field. No sporting title is ever truly decided by popularity contest.

You seem to think that popularity polls are an important part of life. You’re a sad, sad man, if you live your life according to the opinions of others. Even Hollywood doesn’t get it right at the Oscars and they’re in the popularity poll business.

The fact is that if by “history” you mean winning championships, then Bama doesn’t have much honest history. Most of those so-called championships weren’t won on the field they were won in the press room.

Many football fans discount championships won before when the AP started voting for their favorites. There is just as much reason to dismiss the AP polls as there is to dismiss the popularity contest before them. But that’s how folks from Notre Dame and Bama can discount the fact that Yale has won more championships than either of those schools. It’s a nice justification for liars.

Every year since the BCS, and its playoff progenitors, we see the accuracy of the AP polls. The preseason polls don’t look a thing like the end-of-year polls. And you trust their popularity poll judgment? We saw that same level of accuracy in 2006 at the end of the year. And you trust their popularity poll judgment? We saw that same level of accuracy in 2007 at the end of the year. And you trust their popularity poll judgment? Shall we go back to the beginning of time to see how wrong one of the world’s least respected professions judges football champions? But you take past AP polls as gospel. Well of course you do. Because you think it makes your granddaddy’s team look good. Apparently you have a tradition of being self-serving.

Much of Alabama’s “tradition” was created in the 70’s. It went hand in hand with our great “tradition” of disco. Since 1980, Florida has been in the top 20 popularity polls more often than Bama. Florida has won two mythical championships to Bama’s one. Florida set an SEC record by winning at least 10 games every year for 8 years. Florida has had two Heisman winners to Bama’s….? Florida has had two Maxwell winners to Bama’s….? Florida has had two Walter Camp winners to Bama’s….? Florida has had one Sammy Baugh winner to Bama’s….? Florida has had three Davey O’Brian winners to Bama’s….? Florida has had one Jim Thorpe winner to Bama’s….? Florida has had one Johnny Unitas winner to Bama’s….? Florida has had one Johnny Lou Groza winner to Bama’s….? Florida has had one Draddy winner to Bama’s….? Florida is 2-1 against Alabama in SEC championship games. Florida has won the SEC 9 times to Bama’s 4.




History has to start somewhere. It started at Rutgers. It continued with Yale and Harvard. It continued with Army. It continued with Notre Dame. It continued with Michigan, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Miami. Some colleges got lucky and got good coaches, some didn’t. Some used what are now banned recruiting practices, some didn’t. Some lowered their academic standards, some didn’t. If winning under those circumstances is what you refer to as “tradition”, you are a sad excuse.

Florida Football began in 1906.

One of the nation’s oldest continuous rivalries, the Florida/Georgia game, started in 1914. Bama started their biggest rivalry with Auburn in 1893, suspended it in 1907, and then resumed play in 1948, You call that “tradition”?

Since 1920, the singing of the Florida Alma Mater after the end of the third quarter is one of the oldest continuous traditions in all of college football.

Did Florida get a later start at becoming a game-winning national football power than some? Who cares? Everyone has that distinction compared to Yale and Harvard. You don’t hear Yale and Harvard whining about their football “tradition” now. So why do Bama fans whine so loudly? Could it be that football is the only distinguishing thing about that school? You certainly don’t hear Bama fans proudly laud their great history of academics. Graduating with a degree in sports management, while having played football, may be the most respected thing a Bama grad can achieve.

Bama has a proud “tradition” of low graduation rates for its athletes. THAT is Alabama’s legacy to college football.

Florida has erased and surpassed many of Alabama’s “traditions” and made them our own. We fired The Zooker because he was a terrible game day coach. It appears as if there will be more grumbling from Tennessee and Rutgers if this sort of thing continues.

The talent is certainly there at Tennessee.

Not only have I been unimpressed with Schiano's game plans, but Rutgers looks slow. That's a death sentence in today's game.

Another good point was made by Lou Holtz and Mark May while discussing South Carolina. Spurrier just hasn't been able to convince his players that they should expect to win. It shows in their play.

As bad as Notre Dame has been, they probably pulled off another last-minute win largely because anyone who plays for Notre Dame just expects to win. They did it against us one year when we probably had the better team.

Even though my Jersey/Floridian friend is a little confused between South Florida and South Carolina, it still should be a game worth watching. Keep an eye on our little quarterback. He's a real hoot to watch. Also, number 10, our second string QB works as a receiver, and has been very effective at that position.
I don't know how Vegas sees this game, but it will be a big one for either team to win.
