I'm reversing my opinion and now support some sort of playoff system. With the current system, a team is nuts to schedule any tough out of conference opponents. That's not good for the sport.

Arclite, please explain to me which BCS bowl eligible team is more worthy than Illinois to play in the Rose Bowl?

If you want to find fault with the BCS system, fine. I personally prefer a playoff. But you can't blame the Rose Bowl for selecting Illinois in this case. Whenever the Rose Bowl has had a matchup other than Pac-10/Big-10, their TV ratings faulter.

Just keep living in your fantasy world and believing only old dudes in a smoke-filled back room want to see a PAC-10/Big-10 Rose Bowl. The reality is that the people have spoken and they do indeed value the TRADITION.

Do the numbers - compare the number of alumni from the Big 10 schools of alum from all other conferences. The Big 10 has tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of alum -- those schools are huge.

ergo - people = ratings = CASH.

not sure, but I'd guess the SEC and PAC 10 schools come in second/third.

Violin, the honest explanation is your team got SCREWED!

4+1 is awful and here’s why:

These are the five major bowls:

Rose: USC/Illinois
Sugar: Georgia/Hawaii
Fiesta: West Va./Oklahoma
Orange: Kansas/VT
BCS: LSU/Ohio St.

1. Michigan had a better conference record than Illinois.

2. Tennessee finished second in the SEC.

3. Kansas finished at least third in the big-twelve.

So just this year alone, under that 4+1 formula, it would be an unfair representation of what happened on the field. Why is Missouri not represented? Why is Tennessee not in the Sugar Bowl?

What we need is 16 team a playoff. And here’s how you pick the teams:

1. The first and second place finishers of each conference, as determined by a conference championship, are automatically in the playoffs. That way LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Missouri, Virginia Tech, and BC all make the playoffs. It is not fair to penalize teams that finish second in a conference by losing the championship game.

2. The Pac-10 could be allowed two teams because each team in the Pac-10 plays each other and a first and second place team can be decided on the field.

3. All other conferences are guaranteed only one team in the playoff.

The big-ten cannot properly determine a first and second place team without a playoff because the teams don’t all play each other. They would be guaranteed one slot.

The big east only has eight teams and should only be guaranteed one slot because of size.

Other conferences without playoffs would be guaranteed one team.

If we use the bowls this year, it’s easy to see how the 4+1 system isn’t a good way to determine a champion as it relates to games won on the field. The 4+1 is lousy because it penalizes teams that finish second in their conference by losing a championship game.

A 16 team playoff is what we've been discussing up here. You can do this by keeping the current bowl names and sponsors, adjusting the dates somewhat, and start the playoff on Thanksgiving weekend with 8 games, then 4 games after that, 2 games, 1. Nat. Championship Game on New Year's Day.

It will never happen, due to a bunch of old dolts and the corporate greed involved in collegiate football.

Also, the only reason the SEC, PAC-10, ACC & Big East have Conf. Championship games is for MONEY. The games have greedy corp. sponsors, and bring "bowl" type revenue to the conf.

Pull your stupid head out of your arse arclite.

It would be nice to see a couple of bowl games here up north, where football was meant to be played. The SEC teams wouldn't fare so well in football weather.

32. New Orleans Bowl, Dec. 21, Florida Atlantic vs. Memphis.
We'd rather spend time with our mother-in-law than watch this.

31. New Mexico Bowl, Dec. 22, Nevada at New Mexico.
We'd rather shop for our mother-in-law than watch this.

30. Independence Bowl, Dec. 30, Alabama vs. Colorado.
For the second season in a row, this bowl matches two 6-6 teams. The Tide will be traveling to Shreveport, La., for the second season in a row.

29. International Bowl, Jan. 5, Ball State vs. Rutgers.
Ball State has a good quarterback (Nate Davis). Rutgers has a good tailback (Ray Rice). Other than that …

28. Humanitarian Bowl, Dec. 31, Fresno State vs. Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets are looking for a new coach, and we're sure the players will be real psyched to play in Boise on New Year's Eve on that blue field.

27. Papajohns.com Bowl, Dec. 22, Cincinnati vs. Southern Miss.
Cincy had a really nice season. The reward? A trip to Birmingham, Ala., to play in a stadium that should be destroyed.

26. Emerald Bowl, Dec. 28, Maryland vs. Oregon State.
Poor Oregon State. The Beavers finish 8-4, yet still get sent to this bowl.

25. Motor City Bowl, Dec. 26, Central Michigan vs. Purdue.
These teams played Sept. 15, and the Boilermakers won by 23. Why the rematch?

24. Armed Forces, Dec. 31, Air Force vs. California.
Air Force is fun to watch. Cal was, too, until it … well … hmm, how do we say this nicely? Bottom line: The Golden Bears come in having lost six of their past seven.

23. Texas Bowl, Dec. 28, Houston vs. TCU.
If we lived in Texas, we'd care. We don't live in Texas.

22. Las Vegas Bowl, Dec. 22, BYU vs. UCLA.
Another rematch. (Arrrggghhh.) The Bruins won by 10 on Sept. 8. But BYU has improved tremendously during the season. The Bruins have not.

21. Sun Bowl, Dec. 31, Oregon vs. USF.
Oregon enters with a three-game losing streak, and its coaches have to be worried about how the Bulls' quick, aggressive defense is going to treat the Ducks' quarterbacks.

20. Alamo Bowl, Dec. 29, Penn State vs. Texas A&M.
Hey, we can't wait to see how the Aggies play for Gary Darnell. And we're looking forward to the news conferences with Joe Paterno now that his salary is public record.

19. GMAC Bowl, Jan. 6, Bowling Green vs. Tulsa.
Our rule of thumb: As long as there is the possibility of a ton of offense, it's worth watching. These teams average a combined 959.4 yards of offense per game.

18. Hawaii Bowl, Dec. 23, Boise State vs. East Carolina.
See above. These teams average a combined 853.6 yards of offense per games. Plus, Boise State is a top-25 team. And what else is there to do two days before Christmas – spend time with the family?

17. Music City Bowl, Dec. 31, Florida State vs. Kentucky.
Two veteran coaches (FSU's Bobby Bowden and Kentucky's Rich Brooks) match wits. Plus, can Wildcats QB Andre' Woodson have success against Florida State's defense?

16. Champs Sports Bowl, Dec. 28, Boston College vs. Michigan State.
It jumps a few spots because it'll be the final game for BC QB Matt Ryan, who played at an extremely high level for most of the season.

15. Poinsettia Bowl, Dec. 20, Navy vs. Utah.
It gets bonus points for being the first bowl of the season. Plus, it'll be interesting to see whether Navy's powerful rushing attack can make much headway against the Utes' stout defense.

14. Meineke Car Care Bowl, Dec. 29, Connecticut vs. Wake Forest.
A nice game-within-a-game between UConn's defense and Wake's motion-happy offense. Plus, it matches two good coaches (UConn's Randy Edsall and Wake's Jim Grobe), both of whom at least informally talked with schools seeking to fill positions.

13. Liberty Bowl, Dec. 29, Mississippi State vs. UCF.
Mississippi State, the SEC's biggest surprise, gets to go against the nation's top rusher in UCF running back Kevin Smith. The junior could set the Division I-A single-season rushing record if he picks up 181 yards. His average is 188.3 ypg.

12. Insight Bowl, Dec. 31, Indiana vs. Oklahoma State.
Indiana is one of the best feel-good stories of the season because of how the Hoosiers rallied in the wake of the offseason death of coach Terry Hoeppner. Plus, both offenses are good and both defenses are mediocre – which means there should be a lot of points.

11. Rose Bowl, Jan. 1, Illinois vs. USC.
Yes, the Illini have had a nice season. But on the face of it, this doesn't look as if it'll be a close game. Still, Ron Zook in the Rose Bowl is a cool thing.

10. Outback Bowl, Jan. 1, Tennessee vs. Wisconsin.
The Vols make their second consecutive trip to Tampa, Fla., for the postseason. The Outback is one of those intriguing Big Ten-SEC matchups.

9. Orange Bowl, Jan. 3, Kansas vs. Virginia Tech.
Last season's Orange Bowl matching Louisville and Wake Forest was close, but not all that entertaining. Why do we think this will be like that?

8. Gator Bowl, Jan. 1, Texas Tech vs. Virginia.
Texas Tech wings it all over the place; UVa. plays it close to the vest. Plus, the personality difference between Tech coach Mike Leach and Cavs counterpart Al Groh is as wide as the Pacific Ocean, which could make for some interesting news conferences.

7. Chick-fil-A Bowl, Dec. 31, Auburn vs. Clemson.
Talk about a tough ticket. While it has been a decade, the Bowden family still harbors some ill will about how Terry was treated by Auburn officials.

6. Cotton Bowl, Jan. 1, Arkansas vs. Missouri.
In all likelihood, Darren McFadden's last college game. You have to feel for Mizzou; the Tigers were one win from playing for the national title but ended up here.

5. Capital One, Jan. 1, Florida vs. Michigan.
Two of the nation's premier programs play in what essentially will be a home game for the Gators.

4. Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 2, Oklahoma vs. West Virginia.
If WVU is over its post-Pitt hangover (how in the world did the Mountaineers lose to Pitt – at home?), this could be interesting.

3. Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1, Georgia vs. Hawaii.
Big-time curiosity  factor at work in this one. Hawaii's offense gives the Warriors a puncher's chance. But can the Warriors' defense stymie the Bulldogs?

2. Holiday Bowl, Dec. 27, Arizona State vs. Texas.
The Sun Devils can make a case that they belong in the BCS. And if not for a loss to Texas A&M in the regular-season finale, Texas may have been in the BCS.

1. BCS National Championship Game, Jan. 7, LSU vs. Ohio State.
Hey, it's for the national title. It doesn't get any better than that.

Big ten vs SEC matchups

LSU vs. Ohio State
Florida vs. Michigan
Tennessee vs. Wisconsin

I see one possible win for the Big 10 here and that is OSU, however they will have to bring it. M will loose by at least 50 and W should get beat by 70 points.

Sorry Hubcap, the Illini are going to get bent over backwards hard by USC.

LSU's D has not been as advertised, plus their coordinator going to Nebraska, plus the undisciplined style of play they have against a very organized bunch in Trestle and I think OSU wins. Again, I'm pulling for my conference but I see this as an SEC L.

UT versus Wisconsin could be interesting. I don't know beans about W, but UT isn't that great of a bowl team under Fulmer.

LSU is the clear favorite in the National Championship game.

* It's pretty much a home game for LSU.
* They play in the best conference in the history of any sport.
* They really should be playing on Sunday.
* They will be healthy again, after going through the toughest conf. in the history of the universe.
* They have much better speed. It will be like the tortise and the hare out there!
* They are undefeated in regular season regulation games this year.
* Thier coach is way better than Tressel. AFterall, every single program in the nation wanted him this year.
* They run the spread offense. There is no way OSU can beat a spread, as a matter of fact, 90% of Big Ten players have never even heard of the "spread" offense.
* Logic 101 - Ohio State is 0-8 against SEC teams in bowl games. The Allstate BSC game is a bowl game. LSU is an SEC team, therefore, it is impossible for Ohio State to win this game.
* LSU has had much tougher competition, making them a more seasoned team. Ohio State will not be able to handle the pressure of playing against such an awsome team, and to be honest, pobably couldn't even beat Old Miss on thier best day.

There is no way we can beat LSU. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Ohio State, and we are now playing the best team from the greatest conference in history at home, with no speed, inferior coaching, and a team that has as much battle experience as the French Army.

Therefore, I only have 3 predictions for this bowl season.

1. Ohio State will forfeit the game to LSU. It's really not worth playing.

2. Alabama will kick the snot out of Colorado.

3. Florida will be disqualified from thier bowl after the NCAA finds out that Tim Tebow (alias - Teabag) is actually a girl.

Wow what a week!
Wow what a week!

Tuesday I towed my boat down to the coast for some fishing with my friends. Thursday night drove back home after catching a buttload of fish. Friday morning up early to drop kids off at school and hit the road for Atlanta. Friday evening we check into our Atlanta hotel and have a great meal with friends at Fogo de Chăo. The place is rocking with Purple and Gold clad LSU fans everywhere. Saturday morning we are up early for breakfast and a quick train ride to the Georga Dome Complex for the SEC Championship Fanfare to get into the mood for the big game. After a great Pep-rally presented first by the VOLS then our own LSU Golden Band, we were off to the GA Dome. We snagged great seats right down by the LSU endzone. The Dome was electric with shouts of Rocky-Top and Geaux-Tigers. SEC football at its best. Somebody had to win and after an exciting game and two picked off passes LSU took the glory. We shouted out HEEEEEEY BAABY!!! till our throats hurt. What a night. Yesterday with our flags sailing down the interstate we continued the celebration all the way back to the bayou. Just as we were crossing the Pearl River and the Louisiana line the news came out that we were going to the big one. Folks down here are walking on air today.

Geaux Tigers!

There’s no question that Florida isn’t the best team this year. But next year… and the year after that…

When you look at the Florida roster you’ll see that Florida loses four starters next year. Bubba Caldwell will be missed when he goes pro, but every other position should be better next year. Our best offensive lineman returns from a season ending injury. Tim Tebow is just getting warmed up. Percy Harvin should have a great year if he expects to leave early...

Florida should challenge for the MNC over the next couple of years. This year we’re playing mostly freshman and sophomores.

Is that what girls look like in Ohio?

It all becomes clear now. Doesn’t every guy in Ohio own a blow-up doll? And don’t those blow-up dolls have facial hair?

Joey Laurenitis is an Ohio girl. When he and Tebow collided last year, Laurenitis got up looking like he just drank a bottle of tequila. So much for overrated Ohio State “tough guys.”

There are no men in the big-ten. Only slow, ugly girls.

My perception is different depending on how healthy LSU gets. I believe Buddha has finally got something right here.

LSU will CRUSH Ohio State to make the great Ohio State Ooooooo and NINE against the SEC. One of the two best teams in the big ten will remain winless against the best conference in the nation.

But having one of your two best teams go 0-8 against another conference means nothing. Statistics are meaningless. Win-loss records are meaningless. The only thing that matters here are feelings. That and the fact that big ten fans are brain dead to ignore everything but feelings. They must allow their brains to hibernate for the winter.

Feelings are great though. I love this passage about the Florida Gators from Wikipedia:

“…The overall athletic program is one of the best in the nation and arguably the best overall in the SEC for the past two decades. The men's and women's teams have combined to win the Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy in every year but one since its inception. The Gators have also been in the top 10 of the National All Sports rankings every year for the past two decades.

Most recently, the Gators completed an unprecedented "Triple Crown", winning back to back Division I Men's basketball championships while sandwiching a BCS National Title in football in between, all in 366 days.”

I love the part where it says “arguably the best overall in the SEC for the past two decades.” and then it goes on to quote some amazing statistics especially the one that says, “The men's and women's teams have combined to win the Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy in every year but one since its inception.”

OK. I guess there are some people stupid enough to argue that winning the overall sports trophy every year but once doesn’t make you the best. I’ll bet they feel strongly about it too.

Buddha Bear comes to mind.

Florida Michigan is a great match-up and I’LL BE AT THE GAME because I am a real college football fan! That, and the game is two hours away, and one of my best friends from college has an extra room at his house in Orlando.

Michigan has pride at stake playing for Lloyd Carr. Lloyd was descent but he couldn’t beat Ohio State. Hell, if you can’t beat Auburn, Alabama probably fires you after two years.

Florida will probably be the pre-season #1 in the polls next year. They’re playing for momentum and recruiting.

Florida should pound Michigan. They’re down this year but then they play in the big ten. That conference is down every year. However, much like the pride Notre Dame used to take in its program, Michigan is Michigan. They’ll come to play.

Tennessee vs. Wisconsin is the one I’m really not sure about. I thought Arkansas would take Wisconsin last year. But then Arkansas is a one-dimensional power running team and Wisconsin is used to that playing in the big ten.

Tennessee has all the weapons but Tennessee is Tennessee. They’re often a disappointment in the bowls. If you want your heart broke, root for Tennessee in a bowl game. I’ll be rooting for Tennessee but I won’t be watching the game.

I’LL BE AT THE CAPITAL ONE BOWL!!!

Buddha will probably be curled up in his bed with his bearded blow-up doll.

The "Must See" non-"championship" game of all?

Sugar, Baybeee!

Factoid:
This will be the first ever bowl game between states that appear on consecutive pages of a road atlas!

Bowlder, congrats on winning the big game!

The Pac-10 has got to have the worst bowl affiliations of any of the conferences. The Holiday Bowl isn't bad, but its on a Thursday night. And the 3rd place Pac-10 team has to play in El Paso? The Pac has some of the nicer locations in the country to go to during the winter and El Paso is the best you can do? Even the Insight Bowl dropped its Pac-10 affiliation.

Thank you commish, Tom Hansen. Not only do you let the Big Televen and the Rose Bowl bend you over and give it to you the hard way, but there's no consolation prize afterward.

Thanks, ASUDave! I live and work near Berkeley, so it was great wearing my Stanford sweatshirt around the day after (of course, I had taken lots of heat all week wearing various red shirts, sweaters, etc.). Nuthin' like a year's worth of bragging rights!

I see our first game next year is in Tempe. We have a good friend who works for ASU that we visit now and then, so maybe we'll come down for the game....

I tapped Mangino's phone!
Recorded 12/4/07 between 6:09 and 6:16 AM.

Coach Mark Mangino, (MM), "Hello, this is Mark Mangino".

Arclite, "Coach, you don't know me, but I have the perfect strategy for your upcoming bowl game in Florida".

MM, "So, what is your name and what are your credentials?"

Arc, "Well, I'm a Gator fan and I have a photo-shopped poster of Steve Spurrier hugging Urban Meyer. I post all of the statistics that matter on a website called Thebackpacker.com. I'm sure you've heard of it". The many years I've spent schooling the football fans on TBP.com has honed my football skills to a razors edge. Believe me, if you had to explain football to Buddha Bear, you'd know what I mean."

MM, "Who is Buddha Bear?"

Arc, "Never mind". Do you want my advice or not?"

MM, "I'm listening".

Arc, "Listen closely".

MM, (drops something that sounds like a quarter-pounder hitting the floor) "Mmmfbltmmggmm.... yeah, kid, I'm still here".

Arc, "Take the "KU" off of your helmets and paint "SEC" on them. That will scare the socks off of anyone in the nation."

MM, "You sure this is gonna work, kid?"

Arc, "I guarantee it, and coach...."

MM, "Yes?"

Arc, "While you're at it, run up the score on them."

MM, (sounds of something plastic being chewed on, phone goes dead)

Bowlder, I noticed that our Stanford game was very early next year. I wonder how that happened.

Anyway, I think I've finally convinced my wife that I'm getting season tickets again next year after a few years of not "being able to afford them".

Yeah, those early games are weird. The Stanford students don't even arrive on campus until the 3rd week of September. I think we had played 2 or 3 games before the students got there this year....

If we decide to go down there for the game, I'll track you down and we can bet a beer on the outcome of the game....

Well you’ve obviously tapped someone pretending to be me, Dunadan.

I’m not that nice.

And I’d never say the SEC scares anyone.

The SEC didn’t scare anyone last year. Remember how sure Ohio State was that they would win? They were so sure, Ohio State fans were incredibly rude to Gator fans that attended the game. Heck, they were so sure they even went to sleep during the game.

How about the media pundits last year who continually droned on about Ohio State and Michigan being the two best teams? Florida and the SEC were just an afterthought.

How about the fan polls last year showing the West, Mid-West, and North-East fans believing Ohio State would crush the Gators? Florida and the SEC were just an afterthought.

Nope, denial is a wonderful thing. Healthy fear is a survival mechanism that many folks lack. If you ignore history, and if you ignore statistics, you’ve got a perfect storm for rationalization and denial.

I certainly hope many of those folks think that way because they’re drunk. It would be a crying shame to think like that and be sober.

I certainly wouldn’t be giving Mangino any advice. I mean, what kind of advice can you give a guy who loses to Missouri and then gets a better bowl than they do? No advice I could give him would outdo that sort of ridiculous luck.

With that kind of mojo going, watch lightning strike down the entire Virginia Tech offensive line in the first quarter.

Maybe I could give Mangino advise on how to attach lightning rods to the Virginia Tech helmets?

You don’t win games by scaring folks. You win by being better and wanting it more.

I like both Kansas and Virginia Tech but I hope Kansas wants it more.

Kansas needs all the help they can get. Their basketball team will certainly never match Florida’s feat of winning back-to-back championships in a 64 team field. Kansas will never set records like winning football and basketball championships in the same year. Nope, Kansas doesn’t create unique traditions. People who live in Kansas need some spark of excitement in their otherwise dreary lives.

Who knows, Kansas may not make it to another bowl for another 100 years.

What kind of advice can I give to someone to help them overcome the depressing drudgery of living in Kansas and rooting for their teams?

Now, something like the idea of living in Kansas and rooting for their teams scares the beejeezus out of me.

In my heart of hearts I do know Florida's probably going to win because Michigan didn't really play anyone and Florida lost to good teams I think. But doom on you, Arc, if Michigan pulls it off. LOL!

Even though my Wolfpack crapped out and missed out on a Bowl game, the Wolfpack Nation is having a good time with our rivals, UNC Tarheels. They are going to give their first year coach who went 4-8 this year a $290,000 dollar raise (plus more money for his assistants) because of rumors that Arkansas wants him as their head coach. Its being said that they didn't even get him to up his $2 million buyout clause. The professors over their are going ape#&%!$ over it. Even the local media, who usually bends over backwards to kiss UNC's butt are giving them hell over it.

Geez. I'm still reeling - and already reminiscing - about recent events commonly known as SEC football.

You poor saps outside our conference are being slighted by fate and having to "root" for other teams in other conferences.

Look back:
LSU vs Auburn
Kentucky vs Tennessee
Georgia vs Alabama
etc, etc, etc...
Man! We had some gardarn smashmouth games this year. You gotta appreciate that, I don't care who you are.
