I only saw the very end of the Sabama-Ark. game. Arky got hosed on that last pass interference call. Bad calls happen in every game but that one was very crucial.” 6:46:44 PM 9/16/07 Ouch! “ ”7:14:09 PM 9/16/07 “Woo HOo! Nice chart...” 9:15:20 PM 9/16/07 “longlost - I agree, that was a bad call. THere was a much worse no-call on our 2nd to last drive. I'm shocked we came back, just shows the difference a coach can make. Hats off to the piggies, that was a tough fought game. I'm not sure the best team won, but dang glad that we came out ahead.” 4:27:43 AM 9/17/07 “Congrats to Florida, they just beat the hell out of Tennessee. Just 9 more games until they get rid of Fulmer!” 6:19:55 AM 9/17/07 “yep, FL is big time - Tebo is one helluva QB - TN is not. Fulmer was fun while he lasted, but he should have turned in his whistle at the end of 2005.” 7:43:48 AM 9/17/07 “Yeah, the sad part is we still have Bama, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky on the schedule. Another losing season is not out of reach for us. Problem is....who do we replace him with? Rumor mill says it will be Grueber.” 8:07:33 AM 9/17/07 “How about that guy at Boise St? I like his style!” 12:34:40 PM 9/17/07 “I have NEVER heard the drumbeat for getting rid of Fulmer and Co. as loud as it is now...not even after the dreadful '05 season. Even those who have been steadfast Fulmer supporters are calling for change. I think the only thing that completely saves his bacon is winning out...and judging by what they put on the field, I don't see how that's possible. 8, or 9 wins and he'll probably get away with throwing an assistant or 2 under the bus. Anything less and he's toast. He needs to go. The game has definitely passed him by. Arky State could beat them. They came very close to beating Texas. If that happens, I don't see how he survives. Some say the final straw for the old guard/big money boosters would be losing to Bama. I can't bring myself to root for Bama against UT, but if it happens and that's what it takes to get rid of Fulmer, I won't shed any tears.” 3:00:04 PM 9/17/07 “ ”3:09:22 PM 9/17/07 “If TN plays against Bama the way they did against Cal and FL, the Crimson Tide will roll.” 3:40:17 PM 9/17/07 Popping back in to say: “Finally Michigan! and Whatever Mr. Knee. Talk to the hand. : P FIGHT ON TROJANS!” 3:58:26 PM 9/17/07 ““Nigal! Speechless?! Only the 5th year failure of a Henne and the "John Cooper" of Michigan (Lloyd Carr) could have made it happen.” Buddha Bear So speaks the man who shut up for months after getting embarrassed in front of the entire college football nation. Dish it out, Buddha, dish it out… Whaaaaat? Whaaaaat? A tirade AFTER the game? I think not. I usually save my tirades for between games and for unrelated sports fan subjects. I like Tennessee and the fans who reside here on TT. In fact, I love the Florida/Tennessee game. Didn’t I already tell everyone about how I convinced Strider and another buddy to hike out and back from Olympic Hot Springs at night, with head lamps, and drive about 15 miles down to a sports bar because I didn’t want to miss Florida/Tennessee when I was out in Olympic NP? It’s usually one of the great college games every year. What the heck happened? I’ve been taking care of personal business for the past week. I was coming home from up north by car. I had a reservation to stay in Florence SC for the night and was somewhere in North Carolina when I got the call from my friend: “I have an extra ticket. Wanna go to the game?” I left the motel at 1am and made it back to G’ville to be in the stands. If there’s one game I want to be at every other year, it’s Tennessee. I can’t say it wasn’t a lot of fun to be there but it was a little disappointing this year. I don’t like to beat down teams I respect. I enjoy beating down teams I don’t, like Ohio State. I don’t know what you guys can take away from that game longlost, Roam, and Chili. Tennessee has supposedly recruited some of the best talent in the country and still can’t get ‘er done. You guys realize it will only be worse next year? We’re a young team, real young. There’s lots of true freshman playing this year and our star receiver Andre “Bubba” Caldwell is injured. We’ve got two 5-star D-tackles and two 5-star D-ends who haven’t even made the rotation yet. Our linebackers should develop into the best unit in the conference. We’re loaded with young studs in the secondary. And the offense? Oh heck, it’s only gonna get much better next year. Be afraid, be very afraid. Speaking of tradition, how about some poignant quotes from the past: After learning that we got Greg Mattison as a co-defensive coordinator: “please feel free to poach any of ND's coaches from the last few years, I am sure you'll love what they do to your team. Maybe you can pick up Dietrick (former OC), so it will take 3 years to implement Meyer's offense, or Baer (former DC) so you can come in close to last in passing defense in the nation.” bongofreek ”As some one recently said, ND's coaching change to this year's staff was like going from mall cops to the FBI. Good luck with our rejects.” bongofreek “Oh, and as for the future...well the future of ND football already wears 4 superbowl rings...I think he'd probably need a few NC rings for his other hand.” bongofreek “I don't think ND's new coach will ever be in a fog...Michigan should have the better players, but I am convinced Weis can out coach just about anybody.” bongofreek “Keep up with the Catholic rips, that's the surest way to for me to remember how jealous you must be about ND's offense. In fact, I think the gators might be in for a year like ND had in 2002...you'll keep winning till the defense breaks down and the offense still can't find a way to move the football. Of course, if you could keep up a steady diet of Wyoming and la Tech you'd be ok, but at least the rest of the SEC will give you a bit of a challenge.” bongofreek Bongo’s a treasure trove of stupidity. He probably choked to death on a rubber. “Yes, Go ND. It will be so satisfying to watch the Irish return to our righful position on top. Make no mistake, the new wind in South Bend is very refreshing. We have lacked coaching and Charlie is the answer, winning will come recruiting is not a problem. Then we will have integrity, CONTINUED great graduation rates, AND on field dominance.” BFB “Yes, for all you doubters please note that Charlie will return ND to glory. We have 7 early committments for the next recruiting class and they are all 4 and 5 stars. Everyone wants to play for the greatest offensive mind in all of Football and not the Johnny come lately in gator land. Also, why all this talk of Tenn- they couldn't even beat ND when we sucked.” BFB Perception sure ain’t reality in BFB's case. “…and dont you dare call notre dame squishy again! not now that we got weis” Crash Bang “man im so excited about nd's new coach. the area of suckiness is over!” Crash Bang I wonder if Crash Bang Crashed and Burned. “Weis is a great talent and its nice to see him get some early success with his coaching team. I'm hoping the Patriots won't miss him too much and that he has a long and successful carreer with Notre Dame.” pedxing Well “long” probably depends on your attention span. “Let me get this straight, Meyer has coached how many downs in the SEC and were crowning him a legend. Hey any biased fan could have wrote this article you moron. I thought the folks in Tuscalooser were bad. I seem to remember a former coach at USC whom sports writers thought would dominate the SEC's Eastern Division. Sorry, but playing in the toughest Division in college football is gonna be less about dominance and more about survival, especially a couple of seasons from now.” trailhound57 2:08:14 PM 6/07/05 Notice the date. “Aww c'mon, let Fla. enjoy its honeymoon with Meyer. I expect him to have some success there, but he won't be the second-coming of Spurrier. First, as you've pointed out, the MAC and Mountain West aren't exactly on par with the SEC. And secondly, there's a lot more parity between the top half of the league than there has been in quite some time. I give Spurrier a lot of credit for that, he forced other SEC teams to raise the bar. I tell folks if they want to see what SEC football was like in the '80's watch the Big Ten.” longlosthiker It appears as if longlost will be spending lots of time in the bar raising glasses. “I wonder what will happen if Meyer goes 11-1 for three years in a row, but can't get by UT?” chili36 Let’s not spend too much time wondering about that, shall we chili my friend? What knowledgeable fans these guys are. last edited: 9/17/07 8:55:02 PM” 9:04:29 PM 9/17/07 “Good quotes about Charlie Weis, arclite. A couple of years back one of the sports writers for a local paper here wrote a 1,000+- word column upbraiding Rutgers' AD for hiring Schiano and not even interviewing the genius, Charlie Weis. I wonder if he's having 2nd thoughts these days. I've been thinking about digging out that column and crafting a letter to the editor, complete with choice quotations.” 3:48:04 AM 9/18/07 “Huh... whadayaknow... that column seems to have been scrubbed from their archives. Try as I might, I can't seem to find it. The Home News and Tribune is a gang of bandwagon hopping pussies.” 4:32:44 AM 9/18/07 “I expected arc's tirade to be an explanatin of why it's everyone's God given right to run up the score on hapless direction schools like that one in East TN.” 4:36:59 AM 9/18/07 “Whatsa big deal? The context of those quotes is that the UF fan lovefest for Herban was way over the top before he ever coached a game. Ole Miss fans were the same way about Orgeron, ditto for Notre Dame fans and Weis. I wonder if their lovefests are over. How about these golden oldies: I've got plenty of faith in Zook, Artex. I met him the other day. He's a real nice guy but if anyone thought Steve was wound too tight, they ain't seen nothin' yet. Zook and Billy Donovan are both confirmed work-a-holics. arclite 2:40:05 PM 7/19/02 or this one: (sorry dayhiker, but it was too funny) “I'm not into moral victories, but last night made me feel pretty good about Mike Shula and the type of team he will field. In the next few years our numbers will start to catch up with us and there will be some leans times, BUT this guy can coach. ROLL TIDE!!!!” dayhiker 6:41:07 AM 9/07/03 I stand by the statement about Herban being no Spurrier. Herban was billed as an offensive genius, yet the strength of his first two teams was Defense, btw recruited by Florida's favorite pariah Ron Zook. Only time will tell if his offense pans out. LSU will be the real test this year. UT's '07 defense couldn't stop a Pop Warner squad. I've always had a lot of respect for Spurrier. The perception is that UT fans loathe him, but I bet you'd be surprised at the number which admire and respect him. I'm not so sure about Herban. The way he handled some of UF's off the field shenanigans last year raised some eyebrows. Lastly, it may surprise you to learn that I'm not all that passionate about UF's OOC scheduling. I'd like to see them play an Oklahoma, Cal, etc. sometime, but mostly I was just having a little fun trying to rattle your cage. You're such a blowhard on this thread, I was attempting to match the intensity of your braying. I know that's how you Yankees try to show friendship, by tearing each other apart. LOL! Speaking of that I've often wondered if a Yankee transplant UF fan such as yourself meets a jorts wearing mullet-headed native UF fan on the street, is there an unspoken tension or does the love of the Gators transcend such cultural distinctions? last edited: 9/18/07 4:26:26 AM” 4:37:09 AM 9/18/07 “I think my quote came after the Oklahoma game. Oh to be young and nieve again.” 4:59:20 AM 9/18/07 “Sports talk radio in Knoxville has only one theme this week....... "How much more do we have to endure before Fulmer goes?" I suspect they will beat ASU, but I also highly suspect they will lose to three of the four games with South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and yes....Kentucky. They will pull out a rabbit on at least one of those. So, at best, we have a 5 loss season. Of course, there are others on the schedule they can manage to lose so who knows. Normally, East Tennessee is a sea of orange during football season. This year, the only people wearing it are in the woods hunting bambi.” 5:21:32 AM 9/18/07 “Just be happy that you aren't playing the ASU just to the east of you (Appalachian State U)” 5:23:33 AM 9/18/07 “I think that's the ASU he's talking about.” 5:24:18 AM 9/18/07 “No, UT plays Arkansas State this weekend. They took Texas to the wire a couple of weeks ago. It should be interesting. I was thinking about turning the power "T" license plate upside down. I believe that is the international sign for a Vol in distress.” 5:29:21 AM 9/18/07 “Ray Perkins used to coach at ARkansas State. I think Wimp Sanderson did too.” 5:32:37 AM 9/18/07 “On VolCalls Fulmer said UT won the field position game against Fla. all night. Wow! He really should just not speak in public. I'm sure it's comforting to all Vol fans that while UF was piling up points that UT was quietly winning the game of....field position.” 5:37:40 AM 9/18/07 “I bet yall kicked butt in time of posession too! When yall got the pick 6 I really thought the momentum would change a bit. It did, UF put on the afterburners. Man they've got a killer instinct.” 5:41:21 AM 9/18/07 “After the awful '05 season, all the talk on bboards, call-in radio was IF Fulmer should get another chance or not and the general consensus was that he had earned one. I mean you don't fire a coach with a good track record after one bad season, lest you have a Bama-esque coaching carousel. This time there is near 100% agreement that he needs to go and the talk is about who UT would go after to replace him and how much is the buyout. last edited: 9/18/07 5:41:39 AM” 5:51:05 AM 9/18/07 “Name 1 Bama coach that was fired who shouldn't have been fired?” 5:53:46 AM 9/18/07 “You're right, I was thinking that Bill Curry was fired but I looked it up and see that he resigned (albeit due to Bama giving him a contract that stripped him of power). I always heard the Bama faithful never liked him even though he was fairly successful. last edited: 9/18/07 5:49:29 AM” 6:01:26 AM 9/18/07 “Brick through the window never happened. Curry had 1 good year, was 0-3 against Auburn and his teams played weak. His players openly mocked him....kinda like with Shula.” 6:04:44 AM 9/18/07 “Fulmer also said "we were just a few flags away from being a really great team last year".” 6:08:11 AM 9/18/07 “We all know who that is.....that's what you get when you let the boosters run the show and lose to AU” 6:13:08 AM 9/18/07 “I was thinking about turning the power "T" license plate upside down. I believe that is the international sign for a Vol in distress.” longlosthiker 6:29:21 AM Perfect! Everyone in East TN should do that - fly the flags upside down at Neyland - what a frat prank that would be. I'm glad to see arclite posting - I was starting to fear the worst - that perhaps the Seminoles had captured him and taped his fingers together or something horrid like that.” 7:50:00 AM 9/18/07 “Is the upside down T like your bat symbol? Maybe Fulmer will have to go to the hospital and yall can perform a coup while he's laid up? Wait, that's been down before.” 8:01:38 AM 9/18/07 “Can you believe LSU is still ranked #2? What a crock.” 9:10:00 AM 9/18/07 “There'll be TWO "Game(s) of the Year" in the SEC this year - FL vs. SC and the winner of that one vs. LSU for the SEC title.” 9:15:18 AM 9/18/07 wow, its been years and my password still works “Yep, I'm not so sure that I don't stand behind my quote from '95. Saturday was like watching a simulation of what an early 90s team would look like versus the team of tomorrow. Football continues to evolve and Tennessee has not evolved with it. Currently, that also seems to be the problem with every nationally recognized program with an old ball coach; think about it (exception pennstate). I do believe Fulmer will gracefully step down after this season and AD Hamilton has began to test the waters. I'm just thankful to see it being handled thus far with a little more poise and respect. That is unless we lose to bama; then Lord help him. last edited: 9/18/07 1:30:33 PM” 1:35:22 PM 9/18/07 “We can only hope!” 1:36:58 PM 9/18/07 “From my years of living in Knoxville, I learned to really dislike UT Football. UT has no competition in the whole state for players. They have one of largest stadiums in the SEC. The fans and boosters are rabid. Lots of money. Lots of money. Lots of money. UT Football players are living Gods in Knoxville. Nice town to be Gods in. No excuse for them NOT to be in the running for number one in the nation each year. last edited: 9/18/07 1:34:14 PM” 1:47:22 PM 9/18/07 “I don't know, especially in the southeast that's somewhat stereotypical of a college town. Baton Rouge, Oxford, Richmond and Tuscaloosa all come to mind. Tenn is a relatively small state with multiple somewhat recognized programs. Of course, the state of Georgia is surprising to me, with over 9 million citizens and only one major football program (sorry tech fans). I wonder about Mark Richt. I was impressed with his coaching with Donnan's players. UT/GA may come down to who can patch the leaks the quickest. last edited: 9/18/07 2:16:47 PM” 2:29:07 PM 9/18/07 “He he...Sounds like ND Stovie.” 2:37:35 PM 9/18/07 “"From my years of living in Knoxville, I learned to really dislike UT Football. In the preseason one of the sports radio shows was commenting on the fact that Tennessee only produces 12-15 top level recruits every year while Florida, for example, produces about 300. I think they said the 3 biggest states for HS football recruits are Florida, Texas, and California. In the SEC Georgia comes in a distant 2nd but there is a sharp dropoff after that. UT's coaches are excellent recruiters, BUT, they HAVE TO recruit nationally. Maybe that's why they suck at actual coaching because they expend so much of their time and energy to recruiting, there's nothing left in the tank. At a UF or TX or USC the coaches are "fishing a stocked pond" and they're practically jumping in the boat. That's also why you see a program like USF on the rise. Even if they don't get the cream of the crop, what's left are still some incredible athletes who can compete. The Mississippi schools are at a severe disadvantage, because not only is the recruiting base poor, but there are 3 major schools vying for them and traditionally they've only recruited at home and from neighboring states. last edited: 9/18/07 3:07:10 PM” 3:16:39 PM 9/18/07 “How can you stand with all those drinks in ya, longlost? Don’t tell me you were sober and wrote that? Urban Meyer, Gregg Schiano, and Jim Tressel are all class act coaches. They stand for everything that’s great about college football. Phil Fulmer not only raises eyebrows he raises questions. And he obviously raises a lot of donuts. Sour grapes? Inability to admit mistakes? You got it all. I DID have faith in Zook. I still do as far as his being a heck of a recruiter. I just had no idea what a lousy gameday coach he was. He’s bound to have more success in the big 10. So what’s your excuse for dumb comments, longlost? Some success? Yeah, I suppose an SEC title and a national championship in your second year is “some success.” How can you believe your own drivel? You can’t stand behind your comments can you? So you resort to narrow-minded, provincially bigoted, insults? Ooooooh, you impress me with your imagination, longlost. I didn’t know someone could completely lack one. MATCH MY INTENSITY??? Bwaaaaahahahaha. I’ve got a Force Recon Gunny friend who says I’m real intense. And that probably means I’m REAL intense. You’re nothing but a puffball, longlost. Guess you root for the right team then, huh? Saturday October 6, Florida plays LSU in Baton Rouge. LSU is for real. I’m still not sure if the Gators can hang with teams like LSU and USC this year. Florida is still a year out from having the kinds of teams we did under Spurrier. I’ve got LSU chalked up for a loss. 10-2 would be a good year. And you’re right Roam, SC is going to be one heck of a game. We were lucky to beat LSU and SC last year. And don’t anyone count out Kentucky this year. They could hurt someone. Guys, I really don’t know what to say about Tennessee. Every year they have top-rated recruiting classes. Fulmer had a better win percentage in the SEC than Spurrier did when he was at Florida. I just can’t figure them out. I wouldn’t look to replace Fulmer just yet. You should give Cutcliff another year or two to straighten things out and then we can talk about a lynching. Speaking of Mississippi schools, Florida has lost three in a row to Mississippi schools. The only thing more pathetic than that would be to actually ROOT for a Mississippi school.” 6:18:32 PM 9/18/07 “I DID have faith in Zook. Yes, but you made that statement before he ever coached a game, much as others posted about Urban before he ever coached a game. In essence you made the same mistake that you're now blasting everyone else for. How can you miss a point that's so obvious. For the obtuse, I'll spell it out. NO ONE is prescient enough to tell how a coach will pan out. Most fanbases will have a lovefest for a new coach and not all of them turn out to be correct. I still say it's too soon to pass judgement on Herban one way or another. He took Zook's fantastic recruits and won with a great Defense. Some coaches take someone elses team and do great but later start to slide. Like Jon Gruden taking Dungy's Tampa team, winning a Super Bowl and then going on a gradual slide to suckiness. I'm not saying Herban will follow that path. The recruiting odds are stacked in UF's favor, especially right now. And by that I mean their recent success is in part due to FSU and Miami being down. Urban Meyer, Gregg Schiano, and Jim Tressel are all class act coaches. They stand for everything that’s great about college football. I'll elaborate in another post. So you resort to narrow-minded, provincially bigoted, insults? Oh please! If I had a nickel for every insulting thing you've said about other teams/conferences and their fans...lay off the holier-than-thou act. "I wouldn’t look to replace Fulmer just yet" As a Gator fan I bet you wouldn't! Man I get no credit for "braying"?!? Since you miss the obvious, I'm quite sure you also missed the subtle way of calling you an ass. C'mon arc, less junior-high level bluster and more intelligence would be a breath of fresh air in your posts.” 9:11:55 PM 9/18/07 “Herban Meyer, strict disciplinarian. Marcus Thomas failed two tests, before the season started. Unless they are beyond inept, those results come back very quick. Marcus missed Southern Miss, then played a warmup game against UCF, then played against Tennessee. Then early the next week it was announced that he was suspended, and an appeal was immediately filed on the silly grounds that both positives were from the same incident (practically zero chance of that after 6 weeks). Thomas sat out the game against a weak Bama team, then voila, reinstated. Played against LSU, Auburn, UGA, then suspended again before the Vandy game. Combine that with Jarvis Moss testing positive, then being allowed to wait until Western Carolina to serve his suspension, Jaques Rickerson, possession of marijuana (is he being punished?), Steven Harris and his offseason suspension, Brandon James with a Western Carolina suspension only for a drug deal gone bad. Then throw in about half a dozen fights in the offseason, Ronnie Wilson's high powered rifle incident, underage incoming freshman beating up a bar manager, two more underage freshmen getting into a fight in a bar, unspecified player beating up a kid while stealing his keg, Hornsby beating up some guy in a parking lot, Doe gang fighting in the middle of the night, Munroe removing parking boot from vehicle and then stealing it. Nobody in the SEC is buying your tough discipline schtick anymore. I see I'm not the only one who's eyebrows were raised... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_blogs/football/ncaa/archive/2007_07_22_index.html” 9:26:56 PM 9/18/07 “arc, It's interesting how vigorously you defend every perceived slight against UF, no matter how big or small (OOC scheduling) and the amount of rationalizing you do no matter how little ground to stand on. You strike me as someone whose entire ego is wrapped up in his school's team. It's not healthy arc, you need to hit the trail more often. "...match the intensity of your braying." "MATCH MY INTENSITY??? Bwaaaaahahahaha" You are absolutely right arc, there is NO WAY I could be as much of an ass as you.” 10:24:50 PM 9/18/07 “Still can't take responsibility can you, longlost? Absolutely, longlost. You are WAY more of an ass than I am. Do us all a favor and stop showing yours would you?” 3:54:56 AM 9/19/07 “I'll admit it arc, I said Herban would have some success. Boy was I way off! I couldn't have been more wrong. You make it sound like I called him a bust. I still say he needs more time before the statues are built in Gainesville. Certainly if you asked opinions of Fulmer in January of '99 they'd be different than what you'd hear today. They stand for everything that’s great about college football Hardy har har! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_blogs/football/ncaa/archive/2007_07_22_index.html C'mon arc, I thought you'd take being called an ass as a compliment. last edited: 9/19/07 4:13:11 AM” 4:22:22 AM 9/19/07 “ Hey Vol fans! I just got your fat ass coach fired! You're Welcome!!!” 4:28:45 AM 9/19/07 “Is CUM flashing the shocker?” 4:38:12 AM 9/19/07 Jump to Page << prev
