Nice pick Max, and haha to all you naysayers. Toledo #25 and movin' up!” 9:18:41 PM 12/31/01 “I'm thinkin' that the Michiagan Tenn game is gonna be an ugly, ugly game. If Michiagn comes to play it'll be anyone's game, if Michigan doesn't show up, well then just screw it! LOL! Probably the biggest game I want to see is the Gamecocks vs. the Buckeyes. A local highschool star named Ryan Brewer went and tried out for OSU and they told him he was too small and not fast enough...move along son. The Gamecocks picked him up and he went on to run roughshod all over the Bucks last year in this game. Lets hope he repeats.” 9:24:10 AM 1/01/02 “Eegad! My Wolveriens are suckin' more than an 8lb. Orich! Hey, at least they're keepin' it within 40! What was the spread anyhow, and more important, does it even matter? LOL!” 2:48:18 PM 1/01/02 “"I'm thinkin' that the Michiagan Tenn game is gonna be an ugly, ugly game." nigal 02:48:18 PM 01/01/02 Nope. Not at all. I don't see anything ugly about it. Nothing at all. Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top Down in the Tennessee hills Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top,,,Ain't no telephone bills Once I had a girl on Rocky Top,,Half bear, other half cat Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop,,,I still dream about that Rocky Top, you'll always be Home sweet home to me Good ol' Rocky Top Rocky Top, Tennessee, Rocky Top, Tennessee Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top Looking for a moonshine still Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top,,,Reckon they never will Corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top,,Dirt's too rocky by far That's why all the folks on Rocky Top, Get their corn from a jar * Refrain I've had years of crimped up city life,,, Trapped like a duck in a pen All I know is it's a pity life ,,Can't be simple again *Refrain” 2:59:21 PM 1/01/02 “Soar winner! =P” 3:02:05 PM 1/01/02 “LOL....sorry nigal,,,couldn't resist. Besides, ya gotta crow while you are on top, because nobody listens when you are on the bottom. :)” 3:04:03 PM 1/01/02 Godliness “Yeah, that Maxie is reeking of godliness, so far. Hey, BB, I picked the Rockettes, so be nice to me. I think the Big 12 has been respectable except for the Mildcats of K-State. Those boys are in my dog house. I have a feeling that KU will start whipping them in the next 2-3 years. Anyway...There are still a few games to go. The Dun could pull it out!” 4:22:42 PM 1/01/02 “No problem Chili. Tenn has earned their braggin' rights. BTW- am I the only one here who thinks them Ducks got screwed at a shot at the title?” 6:58:58 PM 1/01/02 Good bye and good riddnace Steve BellaSorry “That guy sucked. I knew he'd find a way to tank the game somehow. Nice job Steve for having a horrible career at Ohio State and making Stanley Jackson look like Joe Montana.” 7:00:16 PM 1/01/02 “How 'bout them 'Noles! Hey we ended with a win. Gator Bowl just doesn't sit right - but we'll take it. Click your cleats together and repeat after me... *rebuilding year* *rebuilding year* *rebuilding year*” 7:54:34 PM 1/01/02 How bout those Vols “We spanked those wolverines. there's two things those northern schools get when they play in the south,1- good ole butt kicking and 2) sunburned ...... UT 45 - Michigan 17. Go big Orange.” 8:47:30 PM 1/01/02 GO DUCKS “ ![]() Opps, guess Oregon should have gone to the Rose Bowl after all. BCS SUCKS! GO HUSKERS!” 9:02:38 PM 1/01/02 “Well, it all comes down to the great State of Florida, Max. I sure hope we both win our last two picks.” 5:38:29 AM 1/02/02 My League is killin' me! “Colorado folded like a house of cards! Congratulations, Dux. Nebraska must win convincingly or the Big 12 will have a tarnished reputation. For Shame!” 8:54:22 AM 1/02/02 “How bout Them Vols?” 9:20:16 AM 1/02/02 All Vol, Baby!!! “GOOOOO VOLS!!!!!!!!!! WOoooooooooooooooooooooooo!!” 9:41:37 AM 1/02/02 HOW 'BOUT THE SEC!!! “House of cards, Dun? Dang, was more like a wet noodle. Colorado was exposed as being one dimensional. Once Oregon shut down the run, it was all over but the cryin'. The Ducks have some good pass defenders too. Colorado just couldn't generate anything. The really bad thing about a one dimensional running team is that, once they fall behind, it's very difficult to get back into it. In it's two losses this year, Florida was a one dimensional passing team. But both of those games came down to the last seconds. Buddah, I am happy for your Rockets. The fact that the BYU running back was out, was the deciding factor in my choosing them. BYU became one dimensional without him.” 11:13:47 AM 1/02/02 “Looks like some poor point allocation could have me snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. BYU and Auburn for big points? OUCH! If my calculations are correct, I need a Maryland or Nebraska upset to pull it out. Tonight's game could determine it all...” 2:57:49 PM 1/02/02 Last chance “OK, Arc, not too late to change your allegiance to the Ninja Terrapins. LOL I truly think that some of the Colorado players were thinking about the rape case pending against them. Allegedly, there was a Co. student gang-raped by some players and some recruits. If this is true, then I am glad that they got whupped. Big 12 has won 2 and been robbed out of the third, but who's counting? OK....I'll say it....the SEC looks good in the bowls....cough, cough, choke, choke. Go Jayhawks!!!” 6:35:30 PM 1/02/02 Shucks, Darn. i would rather be backpacking “HEY WLD Did you ever make it out here for a football game? I missed the Tostitos Bowl (is it still called the Fiesta Bowl?) aGain.” 8:24:20 PM 1/02/02 “Duna, when will the rape case be launched against the Vols for the gang bang they put on my Wolveriens? LOL!” 9:51:01 PM 1/02/02 SEC: 5-3 IN THE BOWLS “LOL, Nigal. That's really funny. Those Blue and Maize boyz won't be down for long. As I watched most of the bowl games several (amazingly enough) thoughts occurred to me… Announcers, during several of the games, mentioned players who were from the State of Florida, on the rosters of many teams around the country. That there were many more, unmentioned, goes without saying. Some fans around the country will still believe that Florida does not produce more High School football talent than any other State. I watched all three Florida teams win their bowl games with balanced offense, pro-style passing, and tough defense. Some football fans around the country will still believe that the Florida football teams are “overrated.” Ralph Friedgen and Joe Paterno both like Steve Spurrier. They appreciate his honesty and winning attitude. Steve told the unvarnished truth when he said that the media would blame him if Florida lost its bowl game. Spurrier did the classy thing by disciplining his starting quarterback for missing curfew by thirty minutes. Some will suspect ulterior motives, some will believe that the punishment wasn’t enough, some will believe that it was too much, and some will go right on believing that Steve Spurrier is a classless jerk. Some people will still believe that the bowl system is a fair way to determine a national champion. And next year, I may continue to believe that the Big East is a weak conference. Facts are pesky things that often get in the way of our beliefs. I am truly amazed by what some people are capable of believing. Final TT bowl bet standings: Arclite- 275 Dayhiker- 269 Max- 266 Chili- 216 Dunadan- 192 Dayhiker, you had a masterful bowl order. You even picked more games correctly than I did, just not the right ones. Max, I really enjoyed your format. Picking the order from sure bets to the unknowns added an interesting touch. But did you really believe that Florida and Miami deserved such low ranking in your bowl order, or were you just being “cute?” Because you would have destroyed us all if you had ranked either one of those teams close to what they deserved. 21 right, out of 26 games, is impressive picking. Chili, you did a beautiful job of picking the order of teams, but you were doomed by picks like Illinois. The SEC champ against the big ten champ? Come on man, that’s a no-brainer. The SEC is bigger, tougher, and faster than they are. Dunadan, Mr. football god, did you really believe that Nebraska stood a chance in that game? There’s only one thing I’ve got to say to you… I hope Kansas has a great year of college hoops. GO JAYHAWKS! Boys, the championship goes to the Great State of Florida, in the south, where it belongs. NUFF SAID!” 5:35:27 AM 1/04/02 “I hate Miami but I'm glad they won in order to have an undisputed championship team. Man, an Oregon vs. Miami game would have been great!” 7:59:36 AM 1/04/02 “Yes,Nigal it would have been better. But during one of the bowls, Brent Musbuger said that he polled the Las Vegas bookies on who they would give the least points to as an underdog to Miami. The answer: Florida (4 point underdog). Florida lost two games when our starting running back was out with injuries and they were both close games. THAT'S why we need a playoff. Next year Florida should be an even better team but nobody should pick them to win the national championship. You know why? Miami, Tennesee, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, FSU, and (maybe) the SEC Championship Game are why. If Florida goes through that schedule with only one loss it will be a miracle. The bowl system favors teams with weaker schedules even when you factor in strength of schedule. Look at which teams don't favor a playoff. I'll bet you the majority of them play weak schedules.” 8:38:50 AM 1/04/02 “golllllllllly geeeeeee. florida has 16,000,000 people and 15% is black. i wonder why they produce more football talent than my wyoming cowboys? spurrier is a class act. having grossman throwing long with under 4 minutes left sure proved that hahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.” 8:51:41 AM 1/04/02 For the hearing impared “Proved what? Either I missed your point, militiaboy, or you missed our earlier discussion. Care to defend your position? ;-) Boola-boola...boola-boola” 11:04:09 AM 1/04/02 “Well arc, LSU played much better than I thought they would.” 11:23:25 AM 1/04/02 “Yeah, better than I thought too, chili, or else I sure would have ranked them higher on my list. Auburn was a mystery this year too. They played well in some games and very poorly in others. I lost my butt betting on Auburn this year. Every time (except once) I bet them to cover the spread they didn't, when I bet against them they did. Go figure. Dunadan made this post on 12/10: "Don't make it so easy on me, Arcmeister. Nebraska is going to humiliate My Scammy. I'm going to do a little studying up on some games. I especially don't know much about the SEC, where they play that pretend football. Here is my suggestion for the winner. He or she will start a thread with the heading, "I am a football God", and everybody who enters the contest must agree to post on the thread at least once a day for a month." And then Max made this post on 12/12: ”I like Dunadan's "football god" thread idea. That'll be fun.” Are all of my suplicants ready?” 12:09:49 PM 1/04/02 “24... 36... HIKE!!!” 12:11:31 PM 1/04/02 Steve Superior Gone “He just resigned, going to the NFL most likely, couldn't handle the pressure of the SEC.” 1:21:00 PM 1/04/02 HUGE NEWS! “Well all of you GATOR (and Spurrier) fans out there, it looks official. Apparently Steve Spurrier has resigned as Florida's coach and will pursue a coaching position in the pros. If I don't have any more info later in the day, you'll no doubt hear about it on the news tonight. Check out ESPN's website.” 1:21:42 PM 1/04/02 “yep. heard it at lunch.” 1:25:02 PM 1/04/02 “arc - sorry to hear about your coach. I remember how I felt when Stallings left. I lucked out on the bowl order thing. I just copied chili's order and put my picks on his list. Looking back at the order, I really wouldn't have changed much. I would have put the Bama game higher, but all in all I wouldn't have done much different. Thanks chili. I bet there aren't a happier bunch of folks today than the ones in East Tenn.” 1:53:05 PM 1/04/02 Like rats on a sinking ship! “I heard Florida's backup QB is transferring to Miami...is that true?” 2:28:54 PM 1/04/02 “I wonder why Spurrier is leaving Florida? I thought the salary cap in the SEC was higher than in the NFL. Could there be an NCAA investigation in the works?” 2:34:09 PM 1/04/02 “Is SEC salary higher than NFL? I figgered he was going for the big bucks.. was just discussing this earlier.. Maryland game was a joke..” 2:38:31 PM 1/04/02 “Thanks, dayhiker. Yep, I'm a bit bummed on this glorious Friday. Probably true, kleetn. Brock Berlin was the consensus #1 pick out of High School. But as long as Rex is here, Brock's going to sit on the bench. Another scenario has Brock redshirting next year and hoping that Rex goes pro. But now that Spurrier is leaving, transfering might be a really good move for Brock. Nice try Chuckster, but Spurrier ran a squeaky clean program as evidenced by his not starting Rex Grossman in the Orange Bowl, for what many coaches would coinsider a minor infraction. Do you think media darlings Tom Osborn or Bobby Bowden would have done the same? Don't bet your salary cap on it. BTW, Bob Stoops makes more that Steve Spurrier. smokygirl, Spurrier's salary was under 2mil. With incewntives and endorsements it's said he made around 4. College football is now paying big bucks for it's coaches because the colleges make big bucks from boosters and merchandise sales. I'm sad to say that the amount of money in college football is getting, in my opinion, out of hand. But it is a market driven system. Spurrier had a hand in setting the bar a little higher when he came to Florida. Rumour here has it that he's going to the Bucks for 3.5mil base. Shshshshh, don't tell Tony Dungy. As I said, it's all just rumour as of now. We've been discussing reasons. Spurrier has a well publicised disagreement with SEC comissioner Roy Kramer. Kramer is a fan of the bowl system. Spurrior knows that Florida has less chance to compete for the mythical national championship, with its schedule, than teams that play weaker schedules. Steve made a comment before the bowl game that, "It's more fun to climb to the top than it is to hang on once you get there." He may be looking for another challenge. He's certainly had more than his share of bad press, but maybe he can avoid the wags who argue against running up the score in the pros. There's not much thought to Marquis of Queensbury in the pros. Winning the game is the important thing. I'm going to go home and cry now. I'll think about godhood next week.” 3:43:23 PM 1/04/02 “Bring Spurrier to the Titans!!!! The coach Tennessee loves to hate could become our "long lost prodigal son". Wouldn't that be a drastic reversal of fortunes.” 5:26:34 PM 1/04/02 I mean Godly, really Godly “Congratulations, Arc. You whipped up on the competition. Your godhood shines upon us like a star gone nova. Sorry to hear about Steve Spurrier leaving. Hello, Bob Stoops! You'll like Stoops in Florida, he is a talented coach.” 12:26:45 AM 1/05/02 I didn't jump yet. “Thanks, Dunadan. Besides getting less picks right that both Max and Dayhiker, I feel pretty good about the contest. Max really is the champion picker though. 21 right out of 26 impresses the heck out of me. Stoops was our defensive coordinator for a couple of years before he went to Oklahoma, Dunadan. But I think you already knew that. He's a midwestern boy and it's hard to beleive that he'd give up his roots, but a friend of mine says that Norman is not the garden spot of the midwest. I was wrong Chuck D. They must have upped Spurrier's salary while I wasn't paying attention to the now astronomical sums being payed to college coaches. It seems that Spurrier's 2.1mil beat out Bob Stoops 2mil as highest payed coach. Salary Cap? Nah, Florida is probably going to set the bar again. Rumour has it that Florida is offering between 2.5 and 3mil to Stoops. It's a job that even has pro coaches drooling. I just don't see how someone could manage to live on a small salary like that. Must be tough. Oh well, coaching THE BEST TEAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL has it's rewards I suppose.” 5:48:42 AM 1/07/02 “O.K., back from my holiday hiatus. Congrats Arclite! You took that system and ran with it. My calculations had me in second in a squeaker, just a couple points off the lead. Curse Auburn and BYU! And curse me for being stupid enough to buy the BYU hype, after I saw Hawaii manhandle them. No, I wasn't trying to be cute w/Miami and FL, I ranked like I thought they would go down. Only losing five games but blowing the pool hurts, but I can take it until next year's redemption (plus I won a little $$ in another pool; that helps the old ego). Where will Spurrier land? Jacksonville or San Diego? Stoops to FL? The rich just keep getting richer. He'd be a great hire.” 12:36:08 PM 1/07/02 I'll go with, Who Knows? “Stoops, Shanahan, a few other pro coaches on the short list...who knows? Stoops would be a good fit considering he coached here under Spurrier. I've always liked tough defense better than flashy offense but it's awful hard to argue against Spurrier's wide open offensive schemes. It was really exciting to watch. Latest rumours have Spurrier going to Carolina. Maybe Dungy goes to Minnesota and Spurrier coaches the Bucks...who knows. We're not getting any inside info here. Everyone is being very tight-lipped.” 1:38:59 PM 1/07/02 Foregoing Godhood? “Arc, are you waiting for me to post your Thread About Football Divinity? It is now Officially Basketball Season!!!! Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KU!!!! Although, it looks like Miss. St. should be taken seriously. I said it before, no one goes undefeated these days, because the talent is spread around. Did I mention the JAYHAWKS???” 5:33:39 PM 1/07/02 Oh come all ye Faithful “No, Dun, I will let my presence be known in good time. I was going to wait until we have a head of the Church of the Florida GATORS until I started handing down palpal decrees.” 6:13:15 AM 1/08/02 “Goodness, Arc, you are so infallible!” 7:29:24 AM 1/08/02 For acrclite “I found a link to this on a Bama board. The link was to an article on gatorsports.com by a Bama fan. I thought you'd enjoy it. Gator Guys 'n Gals, My goodness, what a difference a week makes! I've been in shock all weekend long. So I can only imagine how difficult the past few days have been for everyone who is a loyal Gator fan. I certainly hope you folks don't mind if I pay a few respects to the newly departed Coach Spurrier. I almost NEVER post on, or even read, the sports forums of any other school except those concerned with the University of Alabama. But this particular incident is so very historical, and thus it certainly warrants special notice. In short, I've been a rabid Crimson Tide fan for over 41 years. And, this afternoon, I was glued to my T.V. set as I recorded Coach Spurrier's last official press conference as UF's head coach. I was actually holding the phone for a fellow Bama fan so that he could hear Coach Spurrier's press conference as it occurred. And I must say that I'm going to miss Coach Steve very, very much. He was a real "fireball", a great deal of fun, and simply an outstanding football coach who possesses an unusual understanding of the passing game. He was great for the SEC, a real tribute to the University of Florida, and just a whole lot of fun to watch. Whenever the Mighty Gators were on the tube, I almost always tuned in to see what was going on. There are many of you who can't remember when Florida was not the SEC powerhouse that it has now become. And those of you who are much older know very well what a special experience it has been to have such an unusual coach to lead your team. Brash, cocky, confident, a great teacher, and a hard-to-please perfectionist, Coach Spurrier has been all of these and more. He believes in and teaches a high pressure, high speed passing game that is designed to destroy an opponent's confidence as quickly as possible. And woe be to the Florida QB who could not understand and/or execute the sophisticated system he absolutely demanded of his starting offensive teams. And whenever that ball was snapped, Coach Spurrier was thinking : "Take it to the house - RIGHT NOW !!!". How very much we're all going to miss his high energy and downright obsession to light up the scoreboard. When things didn't go EXACTLY like he knew they should, when the Florida QB didn't make the PERFECT read Coach Steve thought he should, you could just feel his sheer frustration as the offense came off the field. What he *really* wanted to do was, first of all, throw his visor in utter disgust (of course), then grab a helmet and hit the field to take over the QB position. Next, he would surely throw a 50 or 60 yard TD pass against a max blitz, return to the sidelines, gather his wide-eyed QB's and WR's in a huddle and say : "There. THAT'S what I was talking about !!!". Ah me, Saturday afternoons just aren't going to be the same without that marvelous, volatile, one-of-a-kind football coach leading the Gators to another lopsided victory. And now that the very surprising, yet inevitable, has happened, many of you will finally begin to understand why we Bama fans respect, and even revere, the great collegiate football exploits of the past. While our many jealous enemies (and yours) claim that we "Live in the Past", you'll now understand how very special it is to remember all the many wonderful memories Coach Spurrier and his troops have given you during the past 12 years. As the years go on, you'll have a much deeper appreciation of how much fun it was to watch something very special take place before your very eyes. You'll remember where you were, what you were doing, and what you were feeling when the Gators hit the field and exploded in an offensive frenzy that would leave many a defensive coordinator scratching himself bald. All those countless TD's will seem more exciting, the SEC Championships will grow sweeter, and your first National Championship will represent a level of achievement that you really didn't appreciate prior to this past weekend. That's what it means to experience and enjoy a real winning tradition that captures your very heart and soul like very few things in our day-to-day lives. I don't think that I am exaggerating when I say that Coach Spurrier's Florida teams never failed to hold the respect of most Bama fans. Why? Quite obvious : Steve Spurrier was simply something special. A real innovator, a real leader, and a fierce opponent who never wanted anything less than total victory. If you let him, Coach Steve would flatten you like a pancake before the 1st quarter was over. Quite an experience for fans on both sides of the stadium. It was our own icon, Coach Bear Bryant, who always said that whenever the University of Florida got themselves a good football coach, he would discover that the state of Florida was a real gold mine. He knew what the right coach and leader could do with all those outstanding high school athletes throughout your state. And now that Florida has become the leading hotbed of outstanding football recruits, Bryant's words seem all the more prophetic. While Charley Pell and Galen Hall certainly warrant their own proper recognition in leading Florida to the "Big Time", it took Coach Steve Spurrier to bring the special touch, the rare panache, the unique STYLE that defined the first glorious decade of Florida Gator football. So, I hope you'll understand that many of us have great empathy for you as you face the end of your first great reign of a legendary coach. Will there be other great eras? Of course. Will there be many other SEC Championships? No question. Will there be other National Championships that will unite and electrify the Gator Nation? Count on it. It's just a matter of time . . . and PATIENCE (yeah, I know, don't we ALL hate that one!). But, as those future great battles take place, many of you will feel that strange, sad longing that so many of us Bama fans feel when we wish we could see our great Bear Bryant leaning against a goal post prior to the start of each football game. Even as the next great Gator victories come your way, you'll surely remember how very special it was to watch that wild 'n crazy guy pitch his fits and call his signals in his never ending quest for offensive perfection. Like all the true greats in his profession, no one else will ever quite take the place of Florida's First Son of Gator Football : Coach Steve Spurrier. Let there be no doubt - everyone who loves and respects College Football is really going to miss him. Well, I guess that's it, Gator Nation. Wish I could make your current transition a little bit easier, but, obviously, I simply can't. But I can certainly join with all of you in a very sincere salute to a very special Coach who has brought a level of excellence to the University of Florida that all of you should enjoy and treasure for the rest of your lives. Don't forget him, Gator fans, don't ever forget him. He was special, no doubt. And he'll be a loyal Gator until the day he leaves this earth. And when other foolish, jealous fans accuse you of "Living in the Past", well, I think you'll know what to do. Just remember what it was like to be at "The Swamp" on a glorious Saturday afternoon, all decked out in Florida Blue and Orange, when nothing seemed impossible, and, there before your very eyes, was a man possessed, absolutely demanding the very best from his pupils, determined to lead his beloved Gators to another exciting, memorable victory. Coach Steve Spurrier, this one's for you : ***** THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES !!! ***** We're ALL going to miss you. With sincere respect and best wishes, I remain a life-long University of Alabama Crimson Tide fan. TomTide Madison, Alabama 1/7/2001” 8:11:35 AM 1/08/02 Great Post, Dayhiker “That is one truly Terrific piece of work, Dayhiker. Mr. Tide really speaks to me with those words. Class act is all I can say, dayhiker, class act. That post is an absolute tribute to the classy sports fan. Although trash-talking for fun is amusing to me, it's so much more fun to really respect your opponents. I met a couple of Jawja fans in the Atlanta airport on the way back home from the holidays. What a couple of obnoxious, no class jerks who... I'll have to work harder on my Jawja affliction.” 11:19:03 AM 1/08/02 “"You'll remember where you were, what you were doing, and what you were feeling when the Gators hit the field and exploded in an offensive frenzy..." i hate to say it, but it actually made me a bit teary eyed at that point.” 11:47:00 AM 1/08/02 New Florida Coach “Bob Stoops...Nope Mike Shanahan...Nope Who's next on the list, George O'Leary?” 1:01:31 PM 1/08/02 IMPORTANT UPDATE “Ron Zook- Head Coach Ed Zaubrecher- Offensive Coordinator Larry Fedora- Running Backs Coach Dwayne Dixon- Receivers Coach Jerry Odom- Linebackers Coach Those are only the ones I know about now. Too bad Zook is only going to make 1mil a year, Chucky. Now you'll have to rib the other schools that pay a lot more than that.... bwaaaahahaha, yeah right, in a pigs eye. I'm sure that's going to happen.” 7:02:43 AM 1/10/02 Jump to Page << prev
