Thanks, Buddha!

It is so funny. It is in every Michigan fan's best interests to hope that Ohio State loses. It is the only chance now at the AP national championship.

But with that whiny little twit Urban Meyer as the coach, my gut tells me to root for Ohio State. At least the Ohio State people believe in tradition and honor.

One game won't matter, Nigal. The SEC IS and ALWAYS HAS BEEN better than the dinky-ten.

Come on...where's the love?

Violin ya gotta be happy with Rutgers' progress. To have come so far is an amazing thing. You knew Morgantown would be a very tough place to play. Rutgers took the Mountaineers to three overtimes at their home! THAT is improvement. Rutgers is rising. I don’t think there’s any going back as long as Schiano remains and wants to keep improving. He may start upgrading assistant coaches if they don’t win the conference over the next few years, but that’s the goal for Rutgers now. You expect to be in the hunt for the conference championship. Ya gotta be happy with progress.

Ahhhh yes, back from a wonderful time at the SEC Championship game. Arky, it’s too bad we couldn’t hook up for the game. I went with an Arkansas fan and we had a blast.

Bowlder, I didn’t have any sushi, but I had some white shrimp bisque and scallops.

We had dinner in, what the canned voice in the elevator told us was, the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere. The Sundial Restaurant at the top of the Westin is an all-glass revolving restaurant. The glass elevator goes up 72 stories on the side of the building.

I love mountains. I enjoy heights in the outdoors. But as that elevator rose, and the buildings below us got smaller, I started backing away from the glass. About the last ten stories I had my back to the view and I was crowding that door. “Get me the heck out of here”, I was thinking. And, of course, the higher the elevator got, the more I felt its movement. As we approached the top it started slowing down and moving with a jerky motion. Man, I almost knocked some folks down coming out of that elevator when the doors FINALLY opened.

We ate dinner right next to the window. It was spectacular as we slowly revolved around the top of the building and the view kept changing. I got used to overlooking Atlanta at night and I was fine coming back down. Besides, I was heading back to safety.

What a great atmosphere. All the Florida and Arkansas fans were having a great time together. Everybody was friendly and in high spirits as groups of fans kept doing different school cheers. “Woooooooooooooooooo… PIG. SOOEY! Orange…Blue…Orange…Blue.” There were knots of fans, but many fans from both teams were all talking together. Arkansas folks are friendly people.

We went to the pre-game pep rally at the Georgia Dome Convention Center. We hung out around the stadium and people watched. The women of Arkansas and Florida were definitely enough to hold our attention. The temperature was around 70 and it was a bright blue sky.

Champions of the toughest conference in college football!!! This is an amazing accomplishment in only Urban Meyer’s second year. I still think Florida is a couple of years, and recruiting classes, away from being a powerhouse. Florida is young this year. Meyer is still building the team according to the type of players he wants. It’s just amazing.

I can’t help but remember these words of wisdom about Meyer before the 2005 season:

“... Sorry, but playing in the toughest Division in college football is gonna be less about dominance and more about survival, especially a couple of seasons from now.”
Trailhound57

Who teamed up with longlosthiker when they both agreed to this:

“…I think '06 will be their (Tennessee’s) year to make a run at the NC.”

And then there’s one of my favorites from BFB:

“Yes, for all you doubters please note that Charlie will return ND to glory. We have 7 early committments for the next recruiting class and they are all 4 and 5 stars. Everyone wants to play for the greatest offensive mind in all of Football and not the Johnny come lately in gator land.”

And there is this incredible football wisdom from bongofreak:

“…As some one recently said, ND's coaching change to this year's staff was like going from mall cops to the FBI. Good luck with our rejects (Florida)….”

I thought it sounded like sour grapes then, it looks more like rotten grapes now. Florida went head-to-head with Notre Dame for the services of two-time national coach of the year Meyer. As we all know, Meyer chose Florida as the better program despite Notre Dame’s large northern following and exclusive TV contract. Only time will tell if Florida has as much success playing in the SEC as does Notre Dame playing against the military academies.

Once again, I was hoping for a complete BCS implosion. Unfortunately, the deserving team gets to play OSU. Despite the entire northern population of the U.S. wanting to see a Michigan/OSU rematch, the BCS made the right choice. If you can’t even win your own conference, you shouldn’t be playing in the mythical championship game. I remember what it was like to live up north and believe that the big-ten was all that and a bag of chips. I was wrong. Football in the south is at a whole different level.

There will always be kids who want to leave home to experience the world, but this should be a recruiting bonanza for Florida. With both Miami and FSU having down years, and Florida in the title game, I don’t think those big programs from the rest of the country will be as successful this year in raiding Florida for top talent.

One bright spot, in my hoped for BCS chaos, is Notre Dame going to the Sugar Bowl. That’s just disgusting. Why should Notre Dame play in a major bowl? Wisconsin and Auburn, two more deserving teams, get burned because of favoritism. Take your ND tradition and shove it.

Another bright spot are the computers. Sagarin rates the Gators schedule #19. Sagarin rates Michigan’s schedule #13. Southern Cal has the #2 schedule? Stanford is #1 (congratulations at being #1, Bowlder)? UCLA is #3? Arizona is #4? Washington is #5? It looks as if Sagarin rates the PAC-10 as the best conference. He’s in his own little universe there.

That is complete HS and everyone knows it. Every sports announcer on the planet has talked about Florida’s schedule being tougher than Michigan’s as a reason for Florida to play OSU. I used Sagarin’s power ratings one year for the football god contest. It was the worst I’ve ever done. Sagarin’s ratings were so far off as to be completely useless. I’ll never use them again. Sagarin’s ratings are a yearly joke but they continue to have influence in the current BCS system.

Florida is 2-0 against teams currently ranked in the top ten. Michigan is 0-1.

The SEC has 5 teams in the top 25. The big-ten has 3.

The SEC has 8 teams playing in bowls. The big-ten has 6.

Here we are in year two of the Meyer era and Florida produces an SEC championship and a trip to the mythical game. I believe that Meyer is still two years away from creating the team he wants. Our team is young. Our offensive line is young with no depth. This season has exceeded all my expectations.

Chili, Roam, et. al., you can’t spell Outback without UT can ya? I was at the Citrus the last time Tennessee played Penn. St. Most of the stadium was VOL fans and they left disappointed. I would be very happy to see an old fashioned butt kicking put on Penn St. by Tennessee this year. Make us proud.

Arky, y’all beat the tar out of Wisconsin, ya hear? Make us proud.

Bateaux, by God I hope y’all put a big ol’ butt whoopin’ on those pedophiles. Make us proud.

Opie, I think Auburn will shuck Nebraska! Make us proud.

XL, I don’t have any great expectations for Jawja. I just hope your team shows up.

Dayhiker, what can I say? Try not to embarrass yourselves. The rest of the SEC has distanced ourselves from y’all. You’re like the old Aunt you stick in the corner at parties because she’s got bad gas.

It’ll be interesting to see how badly Ohio State beats Florida. But Florida deserves to be there this year.

Current Vegas odds have Florida at a 7 to 8 point underdog.

Florida is not the second best team.

They are there because of an ideological bias against a rematch.

So, go take your medicine.

BTW, Michigan returns almost everybody next year.

On a serious final note...

The old bowl system was perfect.

Ohio State would have played USC.

Michigan would have played somebody else.

And Florida would have played whatever team the SEC plays.

USC is one of the best teams. If OSU won, they would certainly be the nat. champ. But the other bowls would have allowed for a split national championship.

The current system removes most of the chance of the MOST FAIR solution - co-national champions. The "National Championship Game" nonsense is GARBAGE.

Since the BCS is only about creating stylish matchups and NOT the two best teams, why try to decide anything on the field?

Why not have the traditional matchups and let the voters vote like they always have?

I think that will ultimately be the result. The Big Ten will leave the BCS in four years and order will be restored to college football.

arclite - Wow, you chased eight people away with your SEC BS! When you keep repeating a lie, you begin to believe it's the truth!

You need more reliable sources. You stated:
"Florida is 2-0 against teams currently ranked in the top ten. Michigan is 0-1." Well, Wisconsin is ranked in the top ten and Michigan did beat Wisconsin:

"23-Sep-06 Wisconsin 13 Michigan 27"

Is this just part of your personal bias against the Big Ten or are all your numbers and unreferenced, apparent quotations subject to question?

And will an SEC team ever recruit a half way decent quarterback.

You mean instead of guys like Peyton Manning?

Say what you want, but while the Big 10 is a good football conference the SEC is still better. Every pro-Big 10 stat someone puts up can easily be matched by an SEC stat that is equal or better. Some years are better than others, but historically the SEC is a tougher, stronger conference.

Welll WElll.....arc..it is going to be tough to Cheer for Florida (since they are SEC) I may resolve to pray for a 0-0 tie. (LOL)

As for the Charge for a Quarterback in the SEC...keep an eye on the new kid at Georgia, I watched him play in a High School playoff a year ago in Texas, Stafford has potential. (OH yeah...you Yankees ever hear of a guy named Fran Tarkenton?

LOL..years ago they had a Coach at Georgia (who will remain nameless) he was chosen over Erk Russell (Erk went on to build the Georgia Southern Program) and before one of the throwaway games he made a statement that the QB of some AA team was "probably the best to ever step on the field in between the hedges."

If Ohio State wins I will need something for a friend of mine who is a Die Hard Gator fan. A couple of years ago when Alabama beat Fla we were in a Scout leader meeting (Monday night) and the Scoutmaster walks in...I look up and stand up and say,'Scoutmaster on deck!"

My friend the Scoutmaster says,"Roll Tide" (from Crimson Tide if you don't know)....everyone laughed, and the Gator fan got up and walked out (LOL).

speaking of SEC quarterbacks, theres a kid named Cutler that was the 11th pick overall last year in the NFL from Vandy, he set a few records in the SEC and is now the starter for the Broncos - had a sorta rough first night out, but he showed some promise too.

There's this other kid named Eli that played for some school in Mississippi a few years back that was ok....

Nigal, like most binky-ten folks, you’re a slow learner. My skin is so thick I’m bullet resistant. To quote one of my favorite characters, Fast Eddie Felson, “Look kid, I don’t rattle.”

There’s nobody here who can deliver an insult worthy of my notice. This place is filthy with obnoxious sports fans.

That quarterback quote is a real foot-in-mouth piece of work. Not just because of the history of people like Joe “Willy” Namath and Kenny “the snake” Stabler, but especially after the top 3 rated HS quarterbacks in the nation signed with SEC schools in 2006.

Ya gotta love those whiney northerners. Apoplectic Yankees are funny as heck. Their own stupidity buries them and they try to push the blame onto others:

“…Florida coach Urban Meyer's dislike for the BCS system — especially when it looked like his Gators would get the shaft — has been drowned out the last couple of days by the spleen-venting of Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. Not only does he feel his 11-1 team has been unfairly dissed, but he's also upset with the campaigning Meyer has done for his team since the Wolverines fell in Columbus…”

http://gainesville.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061205/GATORS01/61205027/-1/sports

Actually your coaches and your northern media lackeys got it wrong…again:

"I didn't lobby," Meyer said. "I was asked my opinion. If I wasn't asked, I wouldn't have given it. They said, 'Coach, what do you think of a rematch?' I said I thought that wasn't correct. I didn't lobby for our team. I was asked a question and I answered it."

http://gainesville.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061204/GATORS01/61204013/-1/sports

Waaa…waaa…waaa… they ought to give lessons in thumb sucking up there.

You want a change you whiney Yankees? Then drag the puke-ten into the twenty-first century by having a conference playoff. The stupidity that the weenie-ten and PACthetic-ten show by not having conference playoffs is astounding. It’s hard to believe people can be that stupid.

Thanks, NS. We should always question statistics. Know where I got that 0-1 against top-ten teams stat? Check the Sagarin rankings in the column under VS top 10:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt06.htm

That’s a part of the same lousy system that you whiney northerners want to keep. Just ask Jim Tressel.

Actually, Florida has 12 wins and is 3-1 against ranked teams (all SEC by the way). Michigan has 11 wins and is 1-1 against ranked teams because they play in a puke conference.

The voters agreed:

“…It was such a big deal for Jim Walden, a former Washington State head coach, that he picked Florida No. 1 in the Harris poll, calling Florida's schedule "murderous."… "In my heart of hearts, I believe that neither Ohio State or Michigan could get through Florida's schedule with only one loss."…”

“…Tom Luicci, a Harris voter who bumped Florida up to second, said he made his assessment based on Florida's body of work — not one game. …"Michigan has quality wins over Wisconsin, which played no one, and Notre Dame, which won the Commander's-in-Chief trophy (a reference to wins over the service academies) which I don't consider a major coup."…”

“…Florida played 10 bowl teams and beat nine, including road wins against Tennessee and Florida State, neutral site wins against Georgia and Arkansas and home victories against LSU and Alabama. …”

“…AP voter Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News said a rematch was appealing, but Florida deserves a title shot based on strength of schedule…”

http://gainesville.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061205/GATORS01/61205024/-1/sports

What puke-ten fans REALLY can’t explain away is how their golden-boy champion has a 0-7 bowl record against SEC teams:

”…Jim Tressel and his staff have 35 days to figure out how to break the spell the Southeastern Conference holds over the Buckeyes in the postseason. Ohio State has a sub .500 bowl record (18-19), largely because of that 0-7 goose egg against SEC opponents.

The scary thing is, the SEC has never been stronger, top to bottom, than it is now, with five teams ranked in the top 20 of the Associated Press poll and eight playing in bowl games. …”

http://gainesville.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061205/GATORS01/61205027/-1/sports

The Obnoxious Sports Fan was created with the typical football fan in mind. He is a provincial putz who has no clue that football exists outside his own little cave. He ignores facts, statistics, and anything else that interferes with his myopic view. He is purely driven by his ignorance.

This question typifies his ignorance:
If Florida is soooooo good and the SEC is soooooo dominant, why did Big Ten teams win 3 out of 5 against Florida in the past 10 years?”

This statement typifies his willful ignorance:
BTW, with a major in Mathematics and more than 50 credit hours of graduate school mathematics, I believe I am qualified to ignore your misuse of statistics!

On this thread, the typical sports fan shows himself for what he really is: a loudmouthed, blustering blowhard, who runs for cover when anyone asks him to back up his feelings with facts.

Every year the fans from the SEC play the football god contest. These are educated fans who actually know something about college football around the country. They may not get all of the correct answers, but they are unafraid to take a chance by showing what they know about teams from around the country.

Meanwhile, every year the northern and western football fans run for cover. They slide beneath rocks. Afraid to have their ignorance put on public display, they hide from bowl predictions. Once again they feel that they can pontificate on their knowledge without having to show any evidence that they know anything. They are pathetic!

Thus, The Obnoxious Sports Fan is a true mockery of these fools.

Arclite,

You wallow in the world of blatant generalization.

There are intelligent and unintelligent sports fans in every region of the country.

However, unless you just want a showy little game, you have to match the two BEST teams.

And that requires you to believe that Florida will either WIN or lose by less than 3 - maybe even less considering that home field advantage has been statistically proven to be worth about 3 points.

Michigan has already proven that it can play OSU to within 3 points on an away field OR almost even on a neutral field.

If you truly believe that Florida will beat OSU, then I have no problems with your support of Florida playing in the Sham in the Desert.

But if you just think that a conference champion should play or that a rematch shouldn't happen, then you don't believe in a national championship game at all.

BTW, this idea that the Big Ten should just do whatever the South wants it to do is crap. We were perfectly fine playing in the Rose Bowl every year. The world was great.

But you ninny little SEC boys wanted to play in the Rose Bowl every once in a while.

Those LSU fans didn't buy 45,000 tickets for no reason. It is the granddaddy of them all.

And in four years, the Big Ten and Pac Ten should take it back and drop this silly little BCS scam.

Good Reforms:

Move the final polls to a week after the final games. Too many bowl placements and champions have been decided in the passion of the moment. The last team to play has an absolute advantage.

Remove all non-Division 1A games from the records. Florida can play Western Carolina if it wants, but it should NEVER count in their record.

Reform the voter rolls. They've got a whole bunch of dead wood voting in these polls. Why the Hell is George Perles voting in this thing?

Let Michigan State grow the grass for every major game that is played in NCAA division 1. They may not know how to play football, but they sure can grow some mean sod.

Some of the newspaper commentaries have been a modern miracle of emotional venting this year. I especially love the ones coming out of Michigan. And I'll bet you hang on every word, reformed.

I do take acception with opne statement you used...

has been drowned out the last couple of days by the spleen-venting of Michigan coach Lloyd Carr.

Lloyd has been most diplomatic and has stayed closed mouthed between the time that they played OSU and the final vote. Meyer was the one saying if there was a rematch that every university president should pull out and make a play off system. And that's not campaigning! Riiiight!

Those are the worst.

There are actually writers out there criticizing Lloyd Carr for not slamming into Florida.

Carr has honor. He graduates his players. He respects the opponent. And he wins lots and lots of games. He is above reproach.

Urban Meyer might win a few games, but he's a coaching migrant. He'll be gone just like the rest of them in a few years.

Urban Meyer has just been upgrading. too bad a good coach like that wound up in the Swamp! But I guess he settled for what was available in the glorious South.

BTW, let's look at Urban Meyer's resume.

He graduated from THE Ohio State University.

He was an assistant coach at THE Ohio State University.

His first head coaching job was at Bowling Green (OH) State University (MAC).

There is no doubt that Urban Meyer is a fine football coach.

Nice to see him bring some of that Midwest football magic to this nation's nether regions.

thats interesting - i guess he'll be super motivated to win against his alma mater, i can imagine what the Gator locker room looks like.

OSU can give the folks in Knoxville a call to find out the best way to cook gator tail (Beat Florida week is a fun time to be in Knoxville)

BTW, one of the great weaknesses of college basketball is that the regular season is largely meaningless. It IS exciting to watch a cinderella team win 4 or 5 games in a row.

But as a system to determine the BEST team, I'm not sure that the NCAA tournament is a great model. It's all style and fun and excitement.

And that's what this year's BCS game is. The style bowl. The "let 'em have a chance bowl."

Of course, Florida wouldn't have a 1996 national championship without a rematch.

The NFL has 32 teams. The NCAA has 119 in Division 1A. Unless you want to create a 30 team superleague, you'll always have controversy in determining a national championship - playoff or no playoff.

The BEST solution is to go back to designated conference bowls.

The BEST solution is to have all the 1A conference find a champ - either thru a conf championship game (especially in the bigger conferences where teams don't all play each other) or however they decide.

Then have those conference champs come into a playoff system and work thru brackets.

Then, a team like Boise St. (or hey, OHIO STATE) has a shot at PROVING they are the best team, or not. Take the politics out of it and let 'em bang it out.

If you aren't willing to prove on the field then don't start the season. Just saying it don't make it so!

Heck, Florida might win! There is too much time between the end of the season and the Real Bowl Games. Lots of things change. So, actually, the Bowl Games are meaningless and should be abolished. And who cares which team gets the top honors? We're all the BEST.

both teams benefit from that time - they all get a chance to heal up and watch film.

Yup. The conference championship is the panacea.

I suppose that's why Arkansas was penalized for winning their division this year.

They had to play an extra game, lost and ended up in a lesser bowl.

LSU, which lost its division, was just about in the Rose Bowl without the voting shenanigans.

How's that for fairness in the world of conference championships?

Agreed, the bowl system popularity contest is where the problem lies - its forceing inconsistent results. Conferences that have championship games are penalized in the polling. That championship game is ALWAYS a 'quality win' for the winner and there is inevitably a loser.

You guys are degenerating into sanity here!

Playoff...playoff...playoff

The one good thing about all the pissing and moaning coming out of Michigan is that it may force them to re-examine their own position.

What a concept!
