BY TOM LUICCI
Star-Ledger Staff

It took longer than expected -- until the third question at his post-game press conference yesterday -- but Greg Schiano was finally asked bout being identified as Miami's top candidate in several media reports in the wake of coach Larry Coker's firing on Friday.

The Knights head coach essentially said what he has been saying ever since those rumors first surfaced: Rutgers is where he wants to be. He wasn't any more or less assertive in his responses this time.

"My philosophy is that I focus on the things that I have control over and can make a difference in," he said following Rutgers' 38-7 victory over Syracuse. "The whole Miami thing, I've said it for six weeks that I'm very happy here. I have no plans of going anywhere else and I'm going to leave it at that."

Schiano did say he addressed the Miami issue with his players. And, of course, he was asked about the Hurricanes' job at least two more times after that.

"Again, I've said what I've said about this. I'm not going to talk about other jobs," he said. "This is a special place to me. This is where I want to be. We're going to leave it at that.

"I want to take the focus off me and that job. This is my job. Rutgers is my job. (At) this place, the sky's the limit and I plan on being here to see it."

HAH! Welcome to the big time, violin. Not only do the losses hurt more (because they count for more) but you’ve got to deal with yearly peer pressure and media speculation on your coach. Be careful what you wish for.

I would be very disappointed if Schiano left for Miami.

He’s made all the right speeches about staying in his home state and building a winning tradition. He’s done it right. He combined good players with good academics. He graduates his players and hasn’t taken any shortcuts. He got a class act like Brian Leonard to stay for his senior year because the kids believe in what he’s doing at that program. I hate when it’s all about the money.

College football is all about love of the game, teamwork, and honor. I would lose a little more faith in human nature if Schiano were to bail now.

Quite frankly, I think Bama is a terrible job. The fans there have never got out from under the shadow of the Bear. Expectations there are huge and unrealistic in this day of NCAA induced parity and MTV instant gratification. Bama fans, as do many fans, seem to lack patience in any form. You’re on the hotseat the moment you take that job.

Notre Dame is overrated as they are most years. Talk of Notre Dame going to the Rose Bowl is enough, all by itself, to scrap the BCS. I never did have much respect for the Oldest Fart Of Them All anyway. It’s a boring and insignificant game most years.

I think USC stands a good chance against Ohio State. I like that match better than Florida. Florida’s not ready this year. But Meyer’s right on schedule. He had the same improvement at Bowling Green and then Utah that gave him his two Coach of the Year awards. Florida will be challenging for the mythical championship in the not too distant future.

Piano Recital vs The Big Game…snx…snnnxxx… BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA. Only a Stanford or Ivy League grad would have to make that choice. I’m sorry Bowlder. Obviously your son is much more important than any football game, but that is just priceless!!!

I wonder what the peons will be up to next Saturday? Buddha will probably be shoveling the pig sty.

I’ll be staying in beautiful downtown Atlanta, in a half-price hotel room, at the Hyatt Regency just a few minutes from the Georgia Dome.

I may procure a small snack by dining on an appetizer of escargot, foie gras, or sushi before strolling from my hotel directly to the MARTA subway station which will whisk me to Underground Atlanta. There I will hobnob with the hoi polloi observing the young hoties in their finery.

After a cold beverage or three, I shall meander to the Georgia Dome where my plush seating arrangements await.

After an appropriate interval I shall view a clash between two teams representing the greatest college football conference in the land.

At the conclusion of this epic struggle I shall leisurely make my way back the short distance to my rooms where I shall suitably retire for the evening.

The only missing ingredient would be to end the evening in rapt repose as I view my son while he harmoniously plucks the strings of his Cello.

For years I had to listen to fan and media stupidity from around the country: “Steve Spurrier is a poor sport. He runs the score up. I hate Florida because they run up the score.”

These same fans seemed oblivious to the fact that other schools were winning by large margins every year (such as West Virginia’s 80-7 pounding of Rutgers in 2001). Rich Rodriguez, Barry Switzer, Tom Osborne, and Bobby Petrino follow a long line of coaches that score lots of points when they get the chance. But Spurrier was somehow singled out by fans and media. Now, when there are coaching vacancies, many of these same fans are begging, “Please Steve, please coach at our school.” Many in the media are saying what a great thing it would be for Spurrier to coach their program. What total hypocrisy.

My argument defending Spurrier has always been that our current system is largely based on perception. Winning by impressive margins impresses the voters. In this flawed system of popularity contests, winning big translates to more votes, which translates to better bowls, which translates to more money for scholarships and facilities.

This year we hear the other side of that stupidity from both fans and media: “Sure Florida is winning, but they’re not beating teams by enough points.”

Can someone here please explain exactly how many points a team is allowed to score? Exactly what is the proper “margin of victory”? Is there a politically correct score that will satisfy these emotionally dysfunctional fans and sports mouthpieces? It sure seems that many, many sports fans and media pundits have strong opinions on this issue. And these opinions keep changing.

As long as so many sports fans emulate the Democrats by emoting rather than thinking, by changing their “principles” according to how they personally benefit, by believing their opinions are fact, and by not examining their own hypocrisy, there will be a prominent place for THE OBNOXIOUS SPORTS FAN!

This guy seems to agree:

Gators fans had it right all along; style matters
By Bryan Jones
Alligator Columnist

Defense wins championships - just not in college football.
The national title contenders in college football are determined by flashiness and marketability.

In the case of the Gators, they were doomed before the season even started.
Coach Urban Meyer has yet to fully install all the necessary pieces to successfully run the offense he ran at Utah in the Southeastern Conference. But with a stifling defense at his disposal and senior quarterback Chris Leak at the helm, Meyer has focused more on a field position and ball-control game. The Gators throw short, safe passes and rarely take risks on offense, relying on the defense to shut down opponents.

The unfortunate lesson to be learned for UF is that defense-oriented teams don't win games by 50 points - they grind out ugly wins. And ugly wins just don't count in college football these days.

But despite all the talk about how close UF is to having two or three losses, look how close the Gators are to being undefeated.

In UF's only loss, replay evidence showed that Chris Leak's arm was moving forward on what was called a fumble at the Auburn 6-yard line. The replay official, however, decided to ignore the NCAA rule, instead using his telepathic powers to rule that Leak wasn't trying to throw the ball but that he simply flat-out dropped it.

It's the Gators' own fault they lost that game, but if not for some bad luck on that call, they probably would have won.

Still, a loss to Arkansas would likely put the Gators in the Capital One Bowl. To put into perspective how disappointing that would be for UF, a representative from the Capital One Bowl introduced himself to me this past weekend as "the guy from the bowl you don't want to go to."

He's right; I don't want to go there. And neither do the Gators. Kansas City Chiefs coach Herman Edwards wouldn't survive the college ranks because, as we all know, he plays to win the game. Winning the game for some reason is being overlooked in favor of winning big.

Since Steve Spurrier bolted from the Gators in 2001, UF fans have been bashed by some members of the media for being dissatisfied with winning by small margins.

"The problem is that Gators fans became accustomed to style over substance while Steve Spurrier was in town, and simply winning is no longer enough," one of my colleagues recently wrote. "I've got a memo for you: Spurrier isn't coming back. The Fun 'n' Gun is dead. Accept it."

His column was applauded by a couple of other sportswriters later that week.
But the truth is, they were dead wrong, and you were dead right. If not for a lack of style, the Gators would be ranked No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series right now. They have played the No. 1 schedule in the nation statistically, and that doesn't even factor in UF's upcoming game against No. 9 Arkansas (10-2).
The Gators were jumped in the polls by Southern California because the Trojans are winning games by three and four touchdowns while the Gators are winning games by a score or less.

Is it fair? Of course not. But to succeed in the BCS system, teams have to either win by impressive margins or pray that teams ahead of them lose.

So the next time someone smugly claims that UF fans are spoiled brats because they are dissatisfied with a 6-point win against Vanderbilt or a 7-point win against Georgia, consider this:

Style will likely earn USC a spot in the BCS title game, while substance will likely earn UF a seat on the couch for the big game. And that is certainly something to be upset about.

Nowslimmer suffers from both Tourette’s and Alzheimer’s. He blurts out stupid stuff and then forgets not to blurt out something stupid the next time.

He probably even forgot that Zook was too lousy a coach to be in the SEC so the big-ten gladly scooped him up. Zook is a step up for big-ten coaches.

Is anyone paying attention to the staistics? We know big-ten fans don’t, but is anyone else?

As of November 29, 2006 here are some facts about total offense and total defense:

Florida is rated above Southern Cal and Michigan in total offense. Florida is rated above Ohio St. and Southern Cal in total defense.

Let’s see here: Florida has played seven conference teams from the SEC with winning records. Michigan has played three big-ten teams with winning records. Ohio St. has played two big-ten teams with winning records. Southern Cal plays in the Pac-10 (nuff said!). Nobody questions the fact that Florida’s defense is one of the best, but people have questioned Florida’s offense.

Southern Cal hasn’t played against any of the top 25 defenses and Michigan has played against 3 of the top 25 defenses. Florida has played against 5 of the top 25 defenses in the nation and their offense ranks above Southern Cal and Michigan.

And Florida doesn’t deserve a shot? Once again, the BCS is a joke.

The argument for Florida becomes moot if they lose on Saturday. But the fact is that most media mouthpieces, and the obnoxious sports fans who believe them, aren't even considering Florida at this point despite these statistics. This just fuels my belief that one of the stupidest expressions I've ever heard is, "perception is reality."

Forget BCS, here's a better way to play it
Hubert Mizell
November 29. 2006

We're up to our muddy cleats in another college football season and the BCS is still a ludicrous, irritating, inadequate, preposterous, outrageous, asinine, moronic, ill-contrived, short-sighted, witless, flawed and nonsensical flash of stupidity.

Do I make myself clear?

Finally, from atop Mount Academia, we hear words of reason. Agreement between Florida State University and the University of Florida (now there's a concept), with presidents T.K. "Nole" Wetherell and Bernie "Gator" Machen showing an in-sync degree of being fed up and a dual willingness to pursue legitimate Division I playoffs.

Remember the Auburn atrocity?

Changing BCS boos to playoff exhilaration will not be as easy as, say, reuniting Berlin after Ronald Reagan urged, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!" Will more college leaders join T.K. and Bernie in seeing the playoff light? What political stance might be taken by the all-powerful ESPN/ABC lobbying machine?

Having watched the Gators since September, I'm not sure if 11-1 Florida - should coach Urban Meyer's team find Saturday ways to outscore Arkansas in Atlanta - would have ample might to challenge Ohio State, USC or Michigan.

But the Gators strongly covet such an opportunity. Win the Southeastern Conference and they absolutely merit a shot. As do Louisville, LSU, Wisconsin and those blue-field beauties, the Boise State Broncos.

Eleven days ago, after the Buckeyes won 42-39 against the Wolverines, the BCS contraption did not alter its 1-2 ranking of OSU and Michigan. That all but eliminated the possibility of a 12-1 champ from the deep, tough SEC overtaking UM if USC were to bobble, at that point having regular season games remaining against Notre Dame and UCLA.

Rancid discrimination.

But can we sidetrack the absurdity for a moment ... cheering up and putting on holiday smiles ... thinking what the climax to the 2006 season might've been if we had an eight-team playoff?

Before moving on to my fun brackets, I'd like to ask that you join me in saying a quick prayer, giving spirited thanks that the same unholy BCS alliance did not get its claws into college basketball.

A shivering thought.

What if BCS malfunctionaries who cursed us with football's "January Jaundice" had been granted the power to purge "March Madness?" What if the botchers had instituted a ghastly plan, allowing cold computers and a few biased minds to pick just two teams - not the usual 65 - turning the NCAA postseason into a one-night chase of the national championship? Such an idea would've disallowed last spring's bedazzling run to No.1 by the Florida Gators.

If it were in my hands, there would be a 16-team football playoff over four weekends. Wetherell says that'd be OK with him. This year, a Sweet 16 could have hopes of No. 1 still ablaze at Rutgers, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wake Forest and (goodness gracious, Phil Fulmer) with the Tennessee Vols. How grand would that be? But, for now, even to achieve an eight-teamer would be delightful. Anything to escape the BCS, the Alcatraz of postseason schemes.

Just to show I'm a sport, we'll use current BCS standings as a starting point; this scenario would make big sense if we had an eight-school deal. A happening sure to bring massive, screaming national joy that surpasses passions for pro football's Super Bowl. Becoming the greatest U.S. sports happening.

ELITE EIGHT
Dec. 14, 4 p.m. (Fiesta Bowl, Glendale, Ariz.) - No. 3 seed Michigan (11-1) vs. No. 6 seed Louisville (10-1).
Dec. 14, 8 p.m. (Outback Bowl, Tampa) - No. 2 seed USC vs. No. 7 seed Wisconsin (11-1).
Dec. 15, 4 p.m. (Gator Bowl, Jacksonville) - No. 4 seed Florida (11-1) vs. No. 5 seed LSU (10-2).
Dec. 15, 8 p.m. (Sugar Bowl, New Orleans) - No. 1 seed Ohio State (12-0) vs. No. 8 seed Boise State (12-0).

FINAL FOUR
Dec. 22, 8 p.m. (Capitol One Bowl, Orlando) - USC-Wisconsin winner vs. Michigan-Louisville winner.
Dec. 23, 8 p.m. (Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif.) - Florida-LSU winner vs. Ohio State-Boise State winner.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Jan. 1, 3:30 p.m. (Orange Bowl, Miami) - Two survivors meet in Champions Bowl

Do you think such a playoff would be just a bit fuller than the BCS? Do you think breathing is better than suffocating? Do you think chocolate tastes better than cardboard? Do you believe a yacht is better than a leaky raft?

If all your answers are "yes," let somebody know. People with clout. Be classy but firm, loud and demanding. Communicate with your favorite college presidents. Plus your reps and senators in Congress. Your governor. Maybe your president. Or go even higher, screaming out to the cartel at ESPN/ABC.

You copy, Bernie and T.K.?

On Wisconsin (11-1)
arclite - "deep, tough SEC" - Do I detect a little bias in your words. I repeat, "Illinois could beat UF."

To see football, one need look no further than the Big Ten. Football is played in the fall, one game at a time on the gridiron. Either you win, lose or tie. (Maybe there are no more ties.)

Your scheme is out of this world. Talk about blurting out something stupid! You're only trying to drum up more games for your second rate teams from the second rate leagues. We've always been happy with the results in the past. The losers have not earned the right to enter play-offs. Likewise, the multitude of Bowls is nothing more than gleaming more cash out of the public. Why people want to attend so many games between losers is beyond me.

You're just pissed, because top honors this year belong to the Big Ten. All your struggles trying to manipulate statistics are in vain. The game is on the field. Forget your numbers sit back and enjoy the game.

people have complained about the results (ie "We need a playoff") for as long as I can remember.... granted that's only about 30 years, but still, I'm sure they didn't start in the early 70's with that idea. The playoff system would force the issue and settle the question ON THE FIELD, not in the papers.

I mean all the good teams play a pretty good conference schedule. They all have crappy nonconference games. And they all have a handful of really tough games.

I think that the regular college football season, over 12 weeks, does a good job of weeding out the pretenders.

At this point, I don't think that it's really fair to match Ohio State against anyone.

They are the best team.

Now, the system we have means that they have to beat one more.

But I don't see why a 16 team playoff would be any more fair than the current system.

At least the current system eliminates a whole bunch of crappy teams who don't deserve the chance.

Statistics don\'t lie!
arclite - One can prove anything with statistics! And these statements have made much of the public afraid of statistics. Used properly, statistics can sometimes point to conclusions. But improper use destroys any value that they may represent. One problem with your statistics is that they do not contain the human factor.I believe you were critical of some of the objects for which Big Ten Schools play, like the Little Brown Jug. Well, some of these objects are important to not only the players, but their fans and the entire schools. They care, even if most of the nation does not. I mention this because this is one of the facets of the human factor. Most of these objects have existed for years and they can be used to stimulate the teams.

The second thing wrong with your statistics is that you keep searching for statistics to support your conclusions. You quote selective statistics in support of your views. Here is an example: "Florida is rated above Southern Cal and Michigan in total offense. Florida is rated above Ohio St. and Southern Cal in total defense." While you mention Southern Cal in both statements, you use Michigan in one statement and Ohio State in the next. This is not consistant and does raise some questions as to what you are trying to prove. It definitely does not represent the entire picture!

Other than those items, you do pretty well. But, most of your postings sound like they came from other writers, to whom you have failed to give credit.
Previously I stated, "You're a crybaby." Here is one example of that.

It’s funny how conservatives try to justify their positions. They want Social Security to remain unchanged as a government program. They fight welfare reform. They want government to remain the fastest growing segment of our economy. They want their political party to remain in power forever.

Big-ten conservatives want a lock on the Rose Bowl because it’s “tradition.” They don’t want to institute a conference playoff because they’ve never done it that way. And they want the way college football national champions are decided to remain the same because that’s the way they did it in dear old dad’s time.

How can big-ten conservatives be so unchanging in their mindset?

Mainly because it benefits them.

I reprinted an article, Nowslimmer. Do you understand that concept? That was not me crying, it was a newspaper article. Can you comprehend that? Anyone who ignores statistical facts, or doesn’t understand where a source is coming from, probably has trouble understanding anything. Tourette’s has really got hold of you doesn’t it? As Carlos would say, “Duh…da…duh.”

Sanity may reign. I’ve heard much more talk of a playoff this year. Every year the current system reveals itself to be lousy. They try to tweak it and it just gets lousy in different ways. Hopefully the powers that be can overcome the type of stupidity I’m hearing from obnoxious sports fans.

There are tons of Spurrier to Bama rumors floating around now. IF that were to happen I'd be quite happy but would dread all the anti SOS posts I've made over the years being pulled back up by arc. I wouldn't mind eating my words. He might be an SOB, but he'd be our SOB.

WOW! Troll Alert
arclite - Sorry that you've lost it. You're really grasping. What do "conservatives," "Social Security." "welfare reform," and "dear old dad’s time" have to do with football?

BTW, I am "dear old dad," maybe Granddad!

"That was not me crying, it was a newspaper article. Can you comprehend that?" Ha, it sure sounded like you crying. The use of quotation marks and source acknowledgements is the way it was done in "dear old dad's" time. I just hope you don't get hooked for copyright violations.

I guess that you're saying that none of this is you. Sort of like shifting the blame! I should have known that a troll was incapable of individual thought. I'm sorry to see that you've resorted to typical trolling techniques: Deniel, shifting blame, name calling, insults, using worthless, clouded statistics which only confuses the issues, etc.

I fear that you've found some writers that agree with some of your ideas and you've let yourself become brainwashed by their ideas. You're the one with a closed mind.

BTW, with a major in Mathematics and more than 50 credit hours of graduate school mathematics, I believe I am qualified to ignore your misuse of statistics!

According to a reliable source, Chuck Norris has accepted the position of head
coach at the University of Alabama. He is scheduled to arrive in Tuscaloosa by
fiery chariot at 3:00 pm tomorrow.

Although he has no prior head coaching experience, Norris is believed to have
used his patented roundhouse kick to travel back in time and take 20 years of
coaching lessons from the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. Norris also holds the
coveted rank of "houndstooth belt" in kung fu. Norris is not expected to be
introduced at a press conference, as everyone knows damn well who he is. The first question on everyone's mind is, "can he beat Auburn?" Norris's response: "Any fingers that Tubby shows will be promptly roundhouse-kicked into oblivion. He might want to keep those ears tucked into his hat too." He also said that he plans to address the offensive line issue by replacing the current "zone-blocking" scheme with a new "roundhouse blocking" scheme. He promised to explain this scheme further whenever he damn well pleases.

The Chuck Norris hiring has already proven to have an immediate effect on
Alabama merchandising, as sales of houndstooth belts and headbands have risen 700% in the last 2 hours. More to come on this story and on the Tubberville suicide watch. Stay tuned.

“I’m going to ignore any facts that don’t agree with my feelings. I don’t have to provide any evidence to feel that I’m right and you’re wrong.”

Good lord have mercy! Even I can’t get the obnoxious sports fan to be that mindlessly numb. That’s the type of argument I’d expect hear from a three-year-old. You guys must go around humming the, “I don’t wanna grow up, I’m a Toys-R-Us kid” jingle to yourselves.

Unfortunately, a dysfunctional emotional response that overrides thinking seems to be all too prevalent in so-called adult behavior. I guess it’s the numbness that allows folks who think like that to be satisfied with their diminished capacity.

Whoa!! The Cardinal almost pulled off a huge upset today. With a record 29-point spread, our D held their high powered offense to one TD - ONE! We stopped their drives FIVE times deep in our territory, resulting in four FGs and one missed FG. If we hadn't fumbled deep in our own territory and had them run it back for a TD, we probably would have won the game. AND, our offense scored 2 TDs for the first time since the 2nd game of the season. What the heck got into those guys?!

Oh, BowlderSon was SPECTACULAR at the piano recital. I will post at least one video of him playing for your enjoyment....

I think the AP should delay their poll until Monday.

And then, the AP voters should choose the team that is not selected for #2 in the BCS.

That way, if OSU loses in the mythical national championship game, the other team can split the mythical national championship if they win.

How many college football fans commited suicide last night?

The USC collapse was delicious but I sure didn't expect it.

I thought the best game yesterday was Florida & Arkansas. I squeeled like a pig when that bonehead dropped the punt on the 5 yard line to hand the game to Florida (the bravado of the elite athlete is incomprehensible to me). I'm thinking Florida won't get voted #2 because their QB situation is too ugly for a national championship game (although the Tebow left-reverse-pass to the end zone play was a thing of beauty).

And Nebraska still sucks!

Congrats to arclite - your Gators finally won by an acceptable margin.

I can’t say I'm not disappointed with a loss by 2 points in triple overtime in a game that would have sent Rutgers to the Orange Bowl, but what a wonderful regular season this was. A whole bunch of talent will be back next year; we've got some very good players red shirted and recruiting this year should be spectacular. Say hello to the national championship contenders for several years to come - the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Who would have ever believed it?

I won’t be using the ‘Wounded Amoeba’ moniker anymore – you’re welcome to it, BowlderMan.

How many points does Florida need to win by to be the national champion?

Personally, I think they need to win by 10 - the amount they lost to Auburn by.

Oh, and watch the Vegas line on this game. Is there anyone around here who thinks that line will be less than 3 points?

But maybe OSU will muff 5 kickoffs in the endzone so that Florida can win by one.

This is why college football is so great!

BTW, how the hell does a one-dimensional team like Arkansas even get into the championship game of the vaunted SEC.

That game last night was the most damning thing I've ever seen.

Two one dimensional teams mucking about.

But someone's got to win, eh?

OSU shouldn't even have to play again.

Hi Borat! :)

Well, here's what I'm rooting for.

Michigan is only 3 points down in the AP poll.

If they win big over USC and Florida wins by 1 in a sloppily played Mythical Bowl, then Michigan could pull ahead in the AP and split the NC.

So, although it's against Michigan protocol, I think that Lloyd should run up the score against that crappy USC team.

What the voters giveth, the voters can taketh away.

BTW, I think that U of M should change its policy of refusing to campaign for bowl placements like this.

They should be sending glossy brochures and videos and money to all of the voters in the system.

If it takes money to move the system, then let's spend some.

BTW, I am curious if there is any oversight of poll voters.

We live in a world where big time college athletes drive around in expensive cars and get flown all around the country. Wink. Wink.

Is anyone monitoring what that poor schmuck of a writer at the San Jose Picayune Times Whatever is driving around in? Or that unknown coach in the MAC?

We need to go back to the old system...and fast.

Man this is the worst thing that could have happened. I don't know who to root for? Rooting for OSU is like rooting for cancer and I can't bear the thought of hearing Arc crow for a whole year about how the SEC is better than the Big 10.

Maybe Jesus will come back between now and then and spare me? Hmmm, me thinks I'll hope for something more solid than that.
