No, Trailhound, that would only be Tennessee fans thinking that. Bama beat Florida this year. Until (and that’s a big if) we get a chance to play them, and beat them, they are better than Florida. And I don’t care if they lose to LSU, Tennessee, and Auburn. Until you prove it, you have no justification to claim it.

The middle linebacker for our 1996 (M)NC team is James Bates. He’s from Tennessee. He now has his own local sports talk TV show. Every year, before the Tennessee game, he does a little skit where he dresses up in a ridiculous hillbilly outfit with crooked teeth and starts screaming about how the VOLS are the greatest. Listening to you, and some other Tennessee fans, that joke takes on more significance for me every year.

I’ve always liked Tennessee, but some of their fans are awfully arrogant. Nothing seems to shut them up for the rest of the year.

Losing to LSU is a real possibility for the Gators. The Gators are a weird team this year. The offense hasn’t jelled. The senior offensive line is struggling. It’s a new system and the players don’t fit Meyer’s mold. Also, when you have four teams on your schedule that have been ranked in the top 5 at one point during the season (5 in the top ten), chances are you’re going to lose more than one game.

Tennessee is having a bad year chemistry wise. That’s the only thing I can attribute it to. Fulmer is a proven coach and the VOLS have great talent as always. They are just not coming together for some reason this year. And this year, once again, they aren’t as good as Florida. It doesn’t matter if Florida loses the rest of their games. Tennessee lost it on the field. In my experience however, that doesn’t seem to matter to some VOL fans. Apparently the moonshine up there is pretty potent.

Wow, you must see a side of UT fans I never see. I could think of many but arrogance is not the word I would associate with our fan base. Neyland Stadium has never exactly had a reputation of being a hostile environment for visiting fans or teams for that matter. Also, remember we all have our bad fans.

I guess I just don't totally believe in your winning on the field theory, although I do believe that the best team almost always does win; at least the best team on that Sat. Yes, you win bragging rights but to say an upset essentially doesn't exist (if I'm reading between the lines correctly) is not exactly logically sound. Many many teams have a win against someone who is ranked above them at seasons end. One of the good arguments against a large playoff (more than 8) is that the regular season would matter very little and all the emphasis would be the playoff. In the UA's last stretch of wins against UT, I only remember 2 or 3 seasons where Bamer finished ahead of UT in the final polls but won the 3rd Sat in Oct.

Here's a UT offensive stat that's well, offensive:
1. #100 in rushing

2. #96 in scoring(and that includes 3 gift TDs from the defense)

3. #86 in total offense

Remember there are only 117 teams total.

Before the 1990 game Corso said that there was no way that that bunch of HS players from Bama could beat the UT machine. 9-6 was the final score and another Daniel Moore print was born. The series has been a weird one. Look at all the streaks. The current UT streak has certainly benefitted from Bama's woes, but it probably balances all those freak wins we had in the late 80's to mid 90's.”

There are many reasons that Tennessee may have finished out the season “looking” better than Florida:

#1- Tennessee may have won against teams with whom they match up better.

#2- Maybe Tennessee was healthy for its games. Maybe Florida had a player injured for a tough game.

#3- Tennessee usually finishes its year with weaker teams. Memphis, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky would make any SEC team look good. We always finish with FSU.




Logic is strongly against your statement. The only empirical evidence is the head-to-head loss. Your statement is only based on emotional opinion.




Never met an arrogant Tennessee fan? James Bates has and so have I. I hope you never have the misfortune of running into an obnoxious (except for me of course) Florida fan. I’ve run into them as well. As you say, every team has some bad fans.

I have listened to more than one Tennessee fan make all sorts of excuses for the team and insist, as you did, that Tennessee is really the best team in the conference at the end of the year. I call that arrogant and unsportsmanlike.


One of my most memorable encounters with a Tennessee fan occurred in Orlando.

Florida had beat Tennessee that year and went on to win the SEC. Florida was playing in the Sugar Bowl. Tennessee was playing Penn St. in the Citrus Bowl (can’t spell Citrus without UT). But because Tennessee had improved at the end of the year, and Florida had lost to FSU, they were ranked ahead of Florida in the AP poll.

I was there with a friend who was a Penn St. fan. Tennessee had the vast majority of the fans in attendance Penn St. had few. I had on my blue Florida hat, but I was there to root for the VOLS because of my loyalty to the SEC.

As we headed for our seats, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and there was a little woman who was a VOLS fan. She had seen my blue hat and assumed I was a Penn St. fan. She was a little snooty as she said; “Feeling a little outnumbered?”

I smiled at her and said, “No ma’am. I’m a Gator fan, but I’m here to root for Tennessee.” She got a disgusted look on her face and was very haughty as she said, “Oh, the second best team in the SEC.”

I stood there with my mouth open for a couple of seconds as she walked off. I was shocked by her arrogant rudeness.

Needless to say, Tennessee lost to Penn St., Florida won the Sugar Bowl (I think it was the year they destroyed West Virginia), and I’ll lay big odds that woman still had a firm belief that Tennessee was better than Florida that year and that Tennessee had only beat themselves.

I readily admit that Tennessee is not very good this year. The special teams are anything but special and the offense is downright offensive. The defense is pretty good but they can't do it all. I was joking with friend the other day that the O needs to start kicking on first down.

That said, I also think Fla. is very mediocre this year (and I thought that BEFORE the Bama meltdown). My frustration with the UT - Fla. game is that any time a defense holds Fla. to 10 pts. (the other 6 were gift-wrapped), that team ought to beat Fla. That's both a tribute to Fla.'s usual offensive prowess and an indictment of TN's offensive ineptitude.

BTW, thank you for sending us Jimmy Ray Stephens. He's managed to take an offensive line that once played smash-mouth football with regularity and turn them into a bunch of tentative underachievers who only know pass-blocking.”

The polls? You’re not going to tell me now that you think the polls are a good way to determine who’s a better team? My God man, there has been enough written on the fallibility of the polls to fill a library.

There is a #4 reason, that you may have thought “UT was the best team in the conference at the end of the year” even though you have no empirical evidence other than your opinion of, God help you, the polls. Maybe Florida had a bad day during a game. It happens and has nothing to do with who’s the better team. You lose to Florida, and you are not better than Florida, even at the end of the year. Just as Bama is better than Florida this year, even if Bama loses all of their remaining games. No excuses! ‘NUFF SAID!

A playoff would be better than the polls and that’s head-to-head.

Trailhound, when the refs admit that they made the wrong calls (multiple) it’s not “would of should of.” When the league office suspends the refs for incompetence, it’s not “would of should of.” It is a fact. The calls were wrong and obviously so. Apparently you’re still making excuses for that as well.

But bad calls have and do happen. I didn’t make excuses for my team. We had opportunities to win that game outright and didn’t. Besides, that Tennessee kicker coming back and making a huge field goal, after missing a short one, was a great thing to watch.

I gave you a good example of a VOL fan making excuses. You have provided a good example of a VOL fan making excuses. If you had provided me with an example of a Florida fan being rude to you, I wouldn’t make excuses by pointing out that there are bad fans on other teams.

Yeah, longlost, Tennessee is a mystery this year. Certainly expectations for them were high this year. Most people picked them to win the SEC. Expectations were high here as well, but it’s tempered with an understanding that this is Meyer’s first year. It just seems to me that Tennessee is lacking that certain “chemistry” for lack of a better word.

I’ll still root for them in their bowl game.

“That was a funny story about your experience in the Citrus Bowl Arc. I had a similar experience at a Flyers game the year they won the Stanley Cup. It was a Flyers-Bruins game about midway through the season. The Flyers had never beaten the Bruins, but they played them tough on that day.

Partway through the game, Derek Sanderson was called for two and got into it with the fans behind the penalty box. He stood up on a chair to challenge them. The grabbed his arms, pulled him over the glass and were pummelling him.

The Bruins bench emptied and went into the stands to retrieve their teammate. Wayne Cashman was about six rows up in an aisle, and a line of fans was coming down one side, getting punched by Cashman, and going up the other side of the aisle holding their jaws.

I had two friends, one from Boston and one from New York, sitting with me. This woman behind us wanted to get us all thrown out. I turned around and screamed back, "I'm a Flyers fan lady, and these are my friends!"

We’ll be lucky to beat LSU

Tennessee beat us up. We lost our best defensive end until the Jawja game, and our #2 receiver for the year.

Bama beat us up badly. Chris Leak had to be shot up with painkillers before the MSU game. His shoulder is still sore from getting sacked so many times.

MSU beat us up. Our #3 wide receiver has a “banged up” knee. Our #4 wide receiver has a sprained ankle. Our All-American center has a sprained ankle.


That’s what can happen when you play SEC teams week in and week out.


Dayhiker, there was excitement about Meyer but no talk of a MNC this year. You’d better fix that memory before the hike or you’ll be putin’ on orange undies one morning.

But why did UF even get the opportunity to play FSU? By your theory FSU had already settled it on the field. They were the better team; ‘NUFF SAID according to your comments. However, the fact of the matter was that voters and those in the media take into consideration that not only did UF have to play at Tallahassee but also they ended the season with the toughest season in the nation. Other teams had lost which had setup the showdown in NO but remember this was before BCS and 1 and 2 very rarely faced each other. Without playing FSU, UF had little chance. Essentially, it was not settled on the field. The media wanted to see a rematch and several predicted a UF win with time to get everyone healthy (injury), practice (improvement), and on a neutral field (something that was not mentioned earlier). Listen, I would never deny any team bragging rights but to say there is no such thing as an upset and teams go throughout the year without improvement or other factors affecting their quality of play them is crazy.

Also, if I remember correctly we were not the ones upset about the calls last year nor the calls in 2001 that saved UF from a slaughter (two fumbles behind the LOS). Do you really want to talk tradition of the team we cheer for? I don't remember UF having a whole lot of tradition or success except for one coach tenure. Nice personal attack.

BTW I stand completely by that comment they are mediocre the other one that you chose not to include that said "congrats to UF." I'm not going to butter up any team just because they won. Did you ever hear me say anything good about UTs victory over LSU? No LSU sucks also to let a team come back after being ahead by 21. I will certainly admit when I made that comment I believed UT be a decent team. IMHO it doesn't look as if they will be even a decent team by season's end as they continue to completely self destruct on offense.

How many time does this have to be explained? The polls had FSU #1 and UF #3 at the end of the year. #2 Arizona St. was locked into the Rose Bowl where they lost to #4 Ohio St. FSU and UF played and UF won. ‘NUFF SAID!!!


UF’s #3 poll ranking allowed them to be in consideration for the NC. Actually, I think the Rose Bowl had a choice between UF and Arizona St. They may have thought UF was better than Arizona St. because of UF’s strength of schedule. Apparently you’re the one who was clueless. That was probably one of those years you were whining, “But we’re the best team in the SEC…. but we’re the best team in the SEC…”

FSU was the better team in November. But, as I said, the polls allowed them to play again. If UF was ranked #5, they wouldn’t have played.

After the bowls UF was #1, Ohio St. was #2, FSU finished #3, and Arizona St. finished #4. UF was better than FSU and Ohio St. was better than Arizona St. That was proven on the field. That is fact.

Fair? I don’t think there’s anything that’s fair about opinion polls determining who’s the NC. But I believe that strength of schedule should be used to determining seedings for a playoff. Maybe we can do that without the polls.

It still comes down to head to head match ups determining whose better. That’s logical. UF won the last game they played against FSU so UF was better at the end of the season. And every year that UF beat Tennessee it was because they were a better team, you whiner. Your opinion don’t mean diddly.

“Arclite I clearly understand the circumstances of the rankings and the game in '96 and was very glad to see UF rightly get the chance to play and win the NC. My point still goes back to your accusation that essentially their is no such thing as an upset, team improvement, home field advantage, and a myriad of other factor which dictate the outcome of a game. My example continues to be that UF would have never had the chance to play FSU if somebody didn't believe that these factors played a role in the game. Listen, your taking it way too personal that I believe that UT had a better team at the end of the season than UF a few and only a very few of those years. Did they deserve to play in the championship instead of UF? HECK NO, THEY LOST THE GAME! Also, by stating it as my belief I'm obviously saying it is only my opinion that in another match up between UF and UT the Vols would have won. My money would have been put on UT. I’ve never liked Notre Dame, but USC is producing gaudy statistics against very inferior opponents. USC is also avoiding major injuries by being able to play their younger guys because they really haven’t had any serious challenges.

I’d like for ND to win, but USC is a juggernaut. I think USC wins the couple of decent games they play this year.

What I’m exactly saying is that you have no basis for your statement except your own opinion. Are you correct to assume that Tennessee was better than Florida, at the end of the season, a couple of years? You are quite possibly correct, but you have no basis other than your opinion.


To tell the truth, I’m not sure UF “deserved” to play in that ’96 title game. There were a lot of factors that had to go just right with the poll system at the time. The Gators had dropped in the polls after losing to FSU, but they didn’t drop as far as I’ve seen the pollsters drop other teams before and after. Then a couple of teams had to lose late, Nebraska being one I remember distinctly. Frankly, I think they were lucky to get that unusual rematch.




Trailhound, I do understand your points, I really do. I flip out here because I make a crude attempt at humor on this thread every year. I make an attempt to mock behavior that I see as poor sportsmanship. We’d need to have a long discussion about specific behaviors to get to the meat of that.

I don’t understand a great deal of human behavior. I also don’t understand why folks have such a hard time self-examining their behavior.

But I understand how some folks could consider MY behavior on this thread as being unsportsmanlike. And they may be right. If I chase any more folks off this thread, I’ll have to seriously consider changing my crude attempts at humor. It’s so over-the-top that most people either ignore it or slam me back (like that butt-head Nigal).
