I'm an extremely happy camper. Didn’t you notice how the two-time National Coach of the Year, the hottest prospect in college football, chose Florida even after Notre Dame wanted him badly? Even though he had ties to Notre Dame? Even though he had previously said that Notre Dame was his dream job? He chose to coach at the best place in the nation. Urban Meyer himself said, “The Florida job is the best in the nation.” And even if pixie has never heard of us, this man knows his college football. Geez, I thought I might have mentioned that once already. Oh well, my memory’s going. I BLEED ORANGE AND BLUE!!! Couldn't help getting my digs in, hyway. Good Lord, you're lucky these days if your players don't kill someone. Every school has its stories. Last year we had a player hit a student in the head with a keg. We kicked him off the team. Schools like Nebraska, Miami, Ohio St., and Florida St. deal with their convicts differently. They take away their allotment of drug money. Dayhiker, I think Phil needs to get a sense of humor. I respect the guy as a coach, but he suffers from hyper offensensitivity. Spurrier always did know how to get his goat. I wonder if ol' Steve will have any choice digs for us now? I've always liked his sense of humor. Can you tell?” 4:34:01 PM 4/15/05 Promo for the UT v. USC game this year “ 9:09:15 AM 4/20/05 “They have football in the SEC???? ACC RULZ BABY!!!” 11:19:53 AM 4/20/05 “Gee, its funny how the guys who buy players seem to chime in this time of year. As a side note, I bet Spurrier just loves being known as the "Coach of the Cocks".” 9:46:10 PM 4/20/05 “Just a reminder that in 88 days its: FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!!!! Here's something new for the SEC. http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050607/SPORTS06/506070345/1345/SPORTS last edited: 6/07/05 10:32:12 AM” 10:31:52 AM 6/07/05 “How many of your players are still in the pokey TH?” 10:35:18 AM 6/07/05 “dh, doesn't matter still enough players to beat your team =)” 10:38:42 AM 6/07/05 “Probably so. I'd like to see a UT/South Carolina jail match. Their arrestees versus yours.” 10:45:35 AM 6/07/05 “Actually, UGA now has 12 arrests and citations since April 2004. The Dawgs take the lead ahead of UT and South Carolina each tied with 11. Also, you have to go back to February 04, for the Vols giving the Dawgs a firm lead. Of course, for you bammers somewhere there’s a conspiracy there too. last edited: 6/07/05 10:55:50 AM” 10:51:54 AM 6/07/05 “No, we're just glad to be out of the news for a while and look forward to being back in the news soon, for the right reasons.” 11:02:43 AM 6/07/05 “Yeah, maybe this year Shula won't have that "deer in the headlights" look on the sidelines.” 11:06:30 AM 6/07/05 “Hiring another coach soon?” 11:07:18 AM 6/07/05 “The Vols are loaded, but their schedule is brutal. They're still a very young team. I think '06 will be their year to make a run at the NC.” 11:09:24 AM 6/07/05 “I'm more worried about our young, thin, OL than I am Shula.” 11:13:50 AM 6/07/05 “Llh, I agree. Tough tough road schedule of Florida, LSU, and Notre Dame. Thankfully we do have USC and UGA in Knoxville. Also, we open up with UAB which is not exactly an ideal game opener.” 11:24:24 AM 6/07/05 “You guys can forget about it. It will be an ACC team that wins the NC this year” 11:28:31 AM 6/07/05 “I think UT will lose one game, win the SEC and go to a non-NC BCS game...a great season but expectations are so high everybody expects them to go to the NC.” 11:31:17 AM 6/07/05 “This is not a Basketball thread hyway! :D” 11:32:20 AM 6/07/05 “Actually, with the schedule they play a one loss (early) team and SEC Champ might actually make it to the Rose Bowl (I think that's right). Last year was the exception.” 11:36:38 AM 6/07/05 “Hmmmm...Bama's young, thin OL meets the Vols' talented and deep defensive front seven, described by some as possibly best in the nation....I Smell A ROUT!!!” 12:12:58 PM 6/07/05 “is this the SEC football thread?” 12:33:17 PM 6/07/05 “Is there any other kind of football?” 12:36:48 PM 6/07/05 “Does any other conference matter? If you mention PAC-10 I'm gonna have to laugh.” 12:37:42 PM 6/07/05 “ACC my friend where the prisons have no name” 12:38:55 PM 6/07/05 “http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=citadel-2_384737_168&prov=citadel&type=story Let me get this straight, Meyer has coached how many downs in the SEC and were crowning him a legend. Hey any biased fan could have wrote this article you moron. I thought the folks in Tuscalooser were bad. I seem to remember a former coach at USC whom sports writers thought would dominate the SEC's Eastern Division. Sorry, but playing in the toughest Division in college football is gonna be less about dominance and more about survival, especially a couple of seasons from now. last edited: 6/07/05 2:12:04 PM” 2:08:14 PM 6/07/05 “GO HAWKS!!!!” 2:10:26 PM 6/07/05 “Is that you're kids high school team?” 2:13:08 PM 6/07/05 “No that would be the Big Ten Football team the Iowa Hawkeyes.” 2:17:10 PM 6/07/05 “Aww c'mon, let Fla. enjoy its honeymoon with Meyer. I expect him to have some success there, but he won't be the second-coming of Spurrier. First, as you've pointed out, the MAC and Mountain West aren't exactly on par with the SEC. And secondly, there's a lot more parity between the top half of the league than there has been in quite some time. I give Spurrier a lot of credit for that, he forced other SEC teams to raise the bar. I tell folks if they want to see what SEC football was like in the '80's watch the Big Ten.” 2:19:12 PM 6/07/05 “Oh yeah, I hear their a powerhouse in Womens Ice Curling. Just kidding. Just never really knew they had a football team until last year. But know their a high preseason pick.” 2:21:08 PM 6/07/05 “Hey we where down in the dumps for so long till Frentz finally started getting his program in gear. So now that we are doing good I have to live it up before he bolts for another job.” 2:25:22 PM 6/07/05 “TH - be careful. According to arclite, Meyer is the second coming. I do think he'll do a fantastic job though.” 4:52:47 PM 6/07/05 “Oh, I do believe he'll do a fine job but still don't see him having anywhere near an .800 batting average in 10 years. My problem was more with the article itself. Can we first let the guy coach at least half a season? "Because the offense is so good, the defense may have the luxury of playing with a large early lead." Aren't we talking about virtually the same offensive personnel they've had for the past 2 seasons.” 5:14:38 PM 6/07/05 “Yep, it's getting closer to football team. Walmart here cleared about 3000 sf to get the orange on the racks.” 9:04:01 PM 6/07/05 Irish “Yes, for all you doubters please note that Charlie will return ND to glory. We have 7 early committments for the next recruiting class and they are all 4 and 5 stars. Everyone wants to play for the greatest offensive mind in all of Football and not the Johnny come lately in gator land. Also, why all this talk of Tenn- they couldn't even beat ND when we sucked.” 10:56:19 PM 6/07/05 “BFB, ND had to struggle to beat a team that was down to it's third string QB in his first game.” 11:18:25 PM 6/07/05 “ND's offensive coordinator just had to leave the team due to health reasons.” 5:51:49 AM 6/08/05 Not true “Cutcliffe, our assistant head coach (offense) and quaterback coach resigned b/c he wasn't healing quick enough after triple by-pass. He wasn't the offensive coordinator. Combined with Weis' gastric by-pass we be happy just to not see an electric Rascal on the sidelines. Anyway, just stirring the pot abit. ND will likely not have a great record this year but the excitement is well-founded and the future looks bright. We still have a few years of our NBC contract! Go Irish!” 11:03:35 PM 6/08/05 “I'm glad to see you're enjoying the best part of the ND season. :D” 11:28:12 PM 6/08/05 USC issues “Well, I guess if you want confirmation of the top rogue progams in the nation, here's your 3-team list. Just wondering: Does Mr. Wright understand that his personal freedom from iron bars might per chance be an issue in this affair, or is it just all about the next step in his career? Taken from LA Times: USC confirms QB Hinds will transfer By Scott Wolf, Staff Writer USC quarterback Rocky Hinds will transfer, the school announced Tuesday. Hinds is expected to enroll at UNLV, where he will have three years of eligibility remaining. "Rocky came to me and said he wants to transfer. He's a great kid, and I'm disappointed," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "I was excited about him, because he had a good chance to compete for the quarterback job here in the future. But he didn't see it that way. He said he wants to go somewhere where he thinks he'll have a better opportunity to play." Hinds, whose decision to transfer was reported previously, could be followed to UNLV by USC tailback Chauncey Washington, who is academically ineligible and said he will transfer. UNLV is Washington's leading choice, although he has also contacted Mississippi. It appears less likely that cornerback Eric Wright will join Hinds. Wright, who withdrew from USC last week, is considering heading to Auburn, Miami or Virginia Tech. Wright, who faces a disciplinary hearing at USC next week after police found 136 ecstasy pills in his apartment, is in the process of sending a letter to the student-affairs office to officially inform them he will not attend the hearing.” 11:37:24 PM 6/08/05 “Also, why all this talk of Tenn- they couldn't even beat ND when we sucked.” BFB 10:56:19 PM Are you kidding me? UT has historically been more dominant over ND than arguably any team in the country. Remember UT only has a losing record two only two teams in college football. Unfortunately, both teams reside inside the state of AL. BTW until you beat someone you still suck. I need to get an update on Arky's hip. 10/23 is the only weekend he's not officiating HS football. Dunadan is a strong maybe as well.” 5:14:30 PM 6/14/05 ““Also, why all this talk of Tenn- they couldn't even beat ND when we sucked.” BFB 10:56:19 PM" LOL! When BFB and I met we hit it off...until we found out he was a ND man and I was a Michigan fan. It became somewhat strained and uncomfortable after that. Just thought I'd get that in for the rest of you who have to wait for football season because your schools don't field a baseball team. Meyer finally rambles home By ROBBIE ANDREU Sun sports writer June 09. 2005 6:01AM Ten states, 14,615 air miles, 33 rental cars, 10 speaking engagements, three time zones and 99 high schools later, Urban Meyer's manic May is finally over. It's been quite a trip. Literally. A non-stop recruiting/booster-greeting/contact-making tour that took him from Miami to New Jersey to Nevada and all kinds of cities, towns and high schools in between. Some might call it the month from hell. But not Meyer. "It's the first time I've done all four weeks on the road (in the month of May)," Meyer said earlier this week. "It was hard, but necessary, and I'm glad I did it. It was great." May is a big month for recruiting and Meyer spent much of it meeting high school coaches and checking out the top recruits in Florida and nine other states (New Jersey, Nevada, Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia and Alabama). In one day, he visited five states. He also placed an emphasis on South Florida, where he visited 28 high schools and attended nine practices in one three-day span. "The reason our staff took this job is because the best football in the country is right around here," Meyer said. "This state is loaded to the gills (with prospects) next year. We also hit the Eastern Seaboard pretty hard and hand-picked some other areas." When he wasn't flying or driving to high schools, Meyer was meeting Florida fans at 10 different Gator Gatherings, where he gave speeches and spent hours signing autographs. He said he learned a great deal about UF fans on his first tour of the state. "What I found is a group of fans who are nuts," Meyer said. "Everyone is hungry, much more than I thought. You go to Utah and Notre Dame and speak and it's pretty good. This is better. It was nuts. That was day after day. I was surprised by that a little bit." The speaking circuit provided some entertaining moments. Meyer was asked to sign a marriage certificate in Daytona Beach last weekend and signed a surfboard earlier in the tour. "Some undergarments were thrown at me a couple of times, but I refused to do that," he said. "I stand for something." On May 19, Meyer started his morning in South Carolina and had four flights that day, the final one bringing him back to Gainesville so he could attend his daughter Nicole's middle school graduation. Overall, it's been a busy, hectic grind, but Meyer said he'll pretty much keep up the same schedule next May. # LEAK AND THE 'O': Meyer said one of the most-asked questions on his speaking tour had to do with quarterback Chris Leak and how he'll fit in Meyer's spread offense. Meyer had a pat reply: There is no offense. "This whole can Chris Leak run the offense. ...there is no offense," Meyer said. "It's the guys wearing the face masks and helmets who are training all summer long that make the offense go. It's not Urban Meyer's offense. It's Alex Smith's, Josh Harris' and Chris Leak's. We're going to do what (Leak) does well." Meyer said Leak came on strong at the end of spring practice and started showing leadership qualities and a better command of the offense after being a silent quarterback his first two seasons at UF. "The last week of spring ball he did really well," Meyer said. "He showed a lot of command, which I thought he was very poor at at the start of spring practice. "He didn't say a word (the previous two seasons under Ron Zook's coaching staff). He never gave a snap count, he never changed protections and he did not call a play because they were signaled in. Basically, he was a quarterback who did not have to talk. I'm proud of what he did in the spring. You knew he would. With Chris Leak, you don't have to ask twice." # PLAYERS TOEING THE LINE: It's still early yet, with a lot of unsupervised time to go between now and the start of two-a-days in August, but Meyer seems pleased with the way his players are working out and living their lives. Unlike the recent trend around the SEC, the UF players have avoided off-the-field problems. "So far, so good," Meyer said. "So far, really good. That's coming from our strength coaches. I'm around (the players) as much as you can be. I'm noticing a lot more coming up to see us. The players are starting to feel more comfortable around us. "You know who's real comfortable? Players who live their lives right. They're the ones always hanging around because they're not going to get chewed out. A bunch of guys are hanging out with the coaches. There are still a few that you'll never see around the office because they're going to get it (chewed out). The whole goal is to have none." The coaches have only limited time with the players this time of year, which leaves Meyer's first UF team in the hands of the strength and conditioning staff between now and two-a-days. "Our goal is to be handed a team (in August)," Meyer said. "Because (the strength coaches) are in charge. They're the ones. They are in charge of this team right now. At Utah, on Aug. 6 (last season) they handed me a team that was ready to go. I challenge our strength coaches to hand me a team. "I don't want to have to worry about getting them in shape, getting their attitudes and chemistry right or we'll be way behind." Meyer said the tough offseason workouts will be worthless if the players don't match them with discipline in their personal lives. "If you're putting things in your body, why are you lifting?" he said. "Physically, it's impossible to improve if you're not taking care of yourself. That's the key at this point. Our guys have to take care of themselves and do what everyone else is doing (in terms of working out this summer). That's how you gain an edge."
