Championship game was a really good game to watch. UT played a good game, but AU let them stay in the game. AU gave them the ball inside the 20 twice and threw a pick in the endzone. 303-29, yards at half time. 565-300, yards at the end of the game.

I think the refs made a mistake, isn't tennessee supposed to get all the calls?

But cocoa, someone up the board said it was a closer game than the score indicated. What are you doing refuting that with yardage and the like?

12/07/04

dayhiker, don't you know total yards don't win you a game. It is the score. What if (big if..lol) UT had scored 40 points because of Auburn turnovers. There longest drive was 25 yds, interceptions returned for TD's..total yardage is usually right but not all the time.
Ewker

Yes, but the point is that Auburn dominated, save their own mistakes. Yes, I recall the Neyland list that trailhound posted where item # whatever was don't beat yourself.

Not quiet sure I'm following your logic either dayhiker. No one will refute that AU decisively won the game. But total yardage is can be very deceiving, especially if those picky holds were not called. Comparing first downs however is a much more efficient gauge of how a game was actually played and also something both Neyland and Bryant paid much attention too. AU 31 UT 9 which shows how UT was unable to stop Campbell. Traditionally speaking, a very unusual game for UT. Bottom line fun game for the fan, plenty of drama and scoring, but the best team won.

My only logic is picking at whoever said it was a closer game than the score. I didn't watch the whole thing, but it appeared to be one of those where you wonder how the score was as close as it was.

I said it was closer than the score and still believe it that. Was it not tied going into the 4th? UT made several mistakes on defense (offsides and late hits) giving AU 2 somewhat easy scoring opportunities late in the game. AU showed against both UT and Bama that they are beatable as those games were similar with more points on the board. Again, as mentioned earlier the success of AU this year (and any Championship Team any given year) is that they never made the game breaking mistake.

Neyland Maximum #1
The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins!

Ewker, that's the way we've done the TT Football God contest for the past three years and it really is very easy.

After everyone posts their picks, a couple of us enter the info into an excel program and keep a running tally of the results.

The only thing that may be complicated are my instructions. I always try to make directions as simple as possible without ANY room for misinterpretation. I may eventually get to the point to where my directions are both simple and impossible to misinterpret. I haven’t got there yet. Maybe it would help if I could draw pictures and diagrams. I doubt a 3D model would be appropriate here.

If anyone wants to see what the bowl postings for the TT Football God contest look like, just look at the posts, on this thread, from early December in years past.

I swear, it’s really easy. And it’s FUN TOO!!!

Lobby your congressman!!! The BCS is at it again.

Not only is Auburn left out in the cold, but California got the shaft.

California goes easy on Stanford. California ran out the clock, from the ten yard line, with over a minute left. They could have easily “run up the score” worse than they did.

Then California goes easy on Southern Miss. by only beating them 26 to 16.

Meanwhile Texas lobbies for a higher ranking and gets it.

We can only speculate about where California would be going bowling if they had “run up the score” on Southern Miss. as they are quite capable of doing.

What a sham!

URBAN MEYER!!!

From The Gainesville Sun:

Meyer is a confident coach who runs a wide-open, innovative offense and believes in his system. He wins, scores lots of points and would like to see a college playoff. And he's already got the needle out, ready to prod UF's rivals.

"There are some certain things we'll do here to egg on rivalries a little bit," Meyer said. "I kind of liked when Coach Spurrier referred to (Florida State) as the team to the west. I remember Coach Spurrier talking about them. I also remember Coach Spurrier talking about Tennessee and the Citrus Bowl (you can't spell Citrus without UT).

"I think that's what makes college football different than pro football. A lot of people say it's arrogant. It's not arrogant. Guys are having fun. We'll try to continue doing that here. You can still respect your opponent, but have great fun enjoying the pageantry of a traditional rivalry."

Spurrier came to UF after winning at a school where few had (or have) - Duke.

Meyer arrives in Gainesville after doing the same thing at Bowling Green and Utah, where the No. 5 Utes are 11-0 and in a BCS Bowl (Fiesta Bowl). When Meyer took over the program two years ago, Utah was coming off a 5-6 season.

"That's ball coaching right there," UF athletic director Jeremy Foley said. "Steve did it. Urban Meyer did it at those two places. Let's see if it translates into it happening here."

A long tenure?
One thing Meyer doesn't have in common with Spurrier is an eye for the NFL. Throughout his 12 years at Florida, the pros showed an interest in Spurrier and Spurrier showed some back and eventually made the move after the 2001 season. Meyer said the lure of the NFL will have no influence on him.

"A lot of people ask if I have an ambition to go to the NFL," Meyer said. "No, never. It's all about the pageantry and tradition of college football."

Said his wife Shelley: "He has no interest in the NFL. He'll never go there."

This Meyer-Florida marriage may be a long-term deal, Meyer and Foley said Tuesday. One that could go beyond the seven-year, $14 million contract Meyer has accepted.

"It's no different than (UF basketball coach) Billy Donovan," Foley said. "People always talk about Kentucky or the NBA. As long as Billy is coaching college basketball, he'll be in Gainesville. As long as Urban Meyer is coaching college football, he'll be in Gainesville. There's no doubt in my mind about that."

Meyer said Tuesday that Gainesville played a major role in what was a family decision to accept the UF job on Friday. Urban and Shelley Meyer have three children - daughters Nicole, 14, and Gigi, 11, and son Nathan, 6 - and decided this would be a good place to settle down and raise a family.

Their perception of Gainesville was forged, in great part, by conversations between the Meyers and Donovan and his wife, Christine, and between Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops, the former UF defensive coordinator under Spurrier who has been the head coach at Oklahoma the past six seasons.

"Bob Stoops is one of the first guys in the coaching profession who had the ability to mix family along with coaching," Meyer said. "I admire Coach Stoops. Every time I talk to him, something about family comes up. Coach Stoops said every year he comes back here because his wife and family love Gainesville so much.

"That conversation, along with Coach Donovan and his wife, made the transition decision easy."

Hah! You posted that just to get my goat, I know it!! In fact, Cal's final possession started with 0:51 left from Stanford's 31, from where they took a knee a couple times until time ran out....

"Then California goes easy on Southern Miss. by only beating them 26 to 16."

Actually it looked to me like Cal had all they could handle. I think they should be in the Rose Bowl, but I don't think they were "going easy" on Southern Miss. - they were scrambling for their lives!

Of course it was an attempt to yank your chain, Bowlder. I got tired of posting blow out scores. I wanted to see how I could lure you back to talking about one of my favorite subjects. EMOTIONAL LOGIC (an oxymoron if ever there was one)!

Although margin of victory isn’t as important as it has been in the past, rankings can mean a difference of millions of dollars for a team. Margin of victory has an effect on the rankings. There are MANY reasons OTHER than humiliation for scoring lots of points on your opponent. Capice?

Do you believe that Oklahoma “humiliated” Colorado?

1. I don’t buy the humiliation bit. Too many games can be called “running up the score” each year (I only posted blowouts through week three of this season). I don’t believe we’ve got that many psychopaths coaching college football.

2. If folks are going to complain about “running up the score” then they should be consistent in their condemnation if they really believe their own righteousness.

Steve Spurrier was vilified by the media for running up the score for a few years when he had great offenses at Florida. Oklahoma and Nebraska have been “running up the score” for years without any complaints. The media and Spurrier did not get along so he became their whipping boy. This leads me to believe that no matter what people say, they will believe what they read in the papers and they will let it form their opinions. Especially if those opinions get them all riled-up and foam at the mouth indignant and righteous.

I just loved what Meyer had to say about Spurrier. Unlike most fans and sportswriters, Meyer knows Spurrier and describes something about him well (he has a wicked sense of humor):

"There are some certain things we'll do here to egg on rivalries a little bit," Meyer said. "I kind of liked when Coach Spurrier referred to (Florida State) as the team to the west. I remember Coach Spurrier talking about them. I also remember Coach Spurrier talking about Tennessee and the Citrus Bowl (you can't spell Citrus without UT).”

"I think that's what makes college football different than pro football. A lot of people say it's arrogant. It's not arrogant. Guys are having fun. We'll try to continue doing that here. You can still respect your opponent, but have great fun enjoying the pageantry of a traditional rivalry."

When Meyer, Joe Paterno, and Lou Holtz all know Spurrier and like him, I never could figure out why so many folks, who didn’t know him at all, loved to hate him. Human behavior is pretty sorry some times, I’ll admit. But I still don’t buy that it’s always humiliation that drives a coach to “run up the score.”

I am so politically incorrect. I have been exposed for the bigot that I truly am. There, I'm out of the closet. Why, oh why did you force me to out myself, chili? I'm so humiliated.

Croom hasn't had a chance to prove himself as a head coach yet. Although Fulmer had a lousy record against Spurrier, and people criticized him greatly for it, I believe that he still has the highest winning percentage of any active coach. That may have changed, but it was true back when Spurrier was beating Tennessee on a regular basis. Ahhh the glory years.

Prepare to be boarded, chili! After Meyer has a year or two in the saddle, Florida will dominate the entire known college football universe! Bwaaaahahahahaha…

Norm Chow had also interviewed, but it looks like they went with the guy with head coaching experience. Of course, Buddy Teevens had experience, too, but Harris actually won a few games.
