“The lack of a penalty occured with Bama on LSU's 10 and up 10-6. If Bama had scored it would have been 17-6 and basically over. Instead LSU got the interception and ran it back to about the 50. It changed the total game. As far as the scores go, they came late on long runs while Bama was run blitzing to try and gamble to get the ball back. The final score is not an indicator of how the game played out.

As far as statistics go, see above. We had about 50% more offense at that point in the game. LSU wasn't doing squat. Their offense came late on a few plays.

Bama majorly screwed the pooch on the kickoff returns, or lack thereof. The point is, though, is that LSU wasn't moving the ball at all. Thanks to what happened later, they didn't really have to.”

A lot of your reasoning seems to be wouldof /shouldof speculation. I didn't exactly say it was not by the letter of the law it was not a penalty. And after seeing that ESPN showed it about 15 times in review, maybe a penalty should have been called. Call it the “’99 Revenge of Booty” if ya like (who remembers?). However, it was not a blatant as most bamer homers have cried about and for the bama nation to say this one play lost them the entire game with over 2 quarters left to play is nuts. In most every team related sporting event game there are possible hundreds of penalties that are essentially are no-calls for various reasons. Especially in football, I truly believe in letting the players play. In this situation because of where the pass was thrown (flat and on the defenders right shoulder) Brown only had a chance to go thought the LSU defender and knock down the ball. Yeah, there was contact but from the replay the contact didn't appear to be initiated primarily be either player. Nice no-call IMHO.

I will add that when I saw it in real time I thought it was a penalty. The first replay I thought Brown was off balance and probably wasn't pushed as hard as appeared. The third review I thought it was a penalty.

Wrong, the ball was supposed to be a quick throw over a well covered receiver's left shoulder. Instead the defender and receiver had to come back to the ball two steps toward the center of the field. It’s extremely rare for a post pattern to be run into the end zone. If the receiver and the defender could have switched uniforms the call would have been the same. Also, Brown obviously needs to hit the weight room. I'll say it changed the flow of the game and admit that neither UT nor Bama is good enough this year to overcome many bad calls. But I refuse to follow Finebaumism that this cost Bama the game. Bama simply got beat. That same reasoning can be made in the AU/TN game earlier this year. Only if Angie hadn't of thrown 6 INT we would have won. Or if Schaeffer and Angie hadn't got hurt UT would have won against ND. The fact of the matter is that UT lost to opponents who executed great gameplans. Hopefully, next year UT will be good enough to overcome injuries.”

LSU would've had to start passing more. Going into this game we had the #1 pass defense in the country. We'd have been in good shape with that. Also, the play happened a bit later in the game than you mentioned, if memory serves.

I've already said on this thread that Bama is not good enough to overcome a bad call. We probably won't be next year either. I feel like it'll be 2006 before we are. If we could pass this year then I like our chances in all 4 of our losses. Yall had 2 plays against us and that's about it. But you had the 2 plays and we didn't, you won. There's a similar story against Ark and USC too.”

So what you’re saying here is that a good team will run up the score so high that the zebras can't make a difference.

I agree that teams should be allowed to run up the score without second-guessing from the political correctly afflicted, but I disagree with the logic of your statement. A good team, playing another good team, should be an evenly matched game. The zebras can decide a close game with bad calls that can unfairly advantage one good team over another.

I heard that the head of the crew was the same one as the UF/Tenn game, but the guy who made the bad personal foul/clock calls was not there. I wonder if they quietly suspended him? You probably had better refs than we did.

Gosh I love the way you try to make your point with facts. Been there, done that. Believe me, very few are listening. College football is all about momentum. That’s why I love the game so much. To me, you make a compelling argument.

“Yeah, I just turned it on Finebaum for a few minutes yesterday and can not believe how he continues to paints his bama audience as victims. I guess anything to get an audience. To be honest, you one of the few Bama fans I enjoy reading post from. Anyway, I do believe every game there are a few plays make a the difference. However, I also belive in Bama's case there was a combo of mistakes that cost them the game besides the unfortunate call. Bad kicking and field position game (this really can kill ya as much as the next one), turnovers, too many 3 and outs, and general lack of execition on both sides of the ball. All can be sumed up in General Neyland's 7 Maxims.

Maxim No 1: The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
Maxim No 2: Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE SCORE SCORE!
Maxim No 3: If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up ... put on more steam.
Maxim No 4: Protect our kickers, our quarterback, our lead and our ballgame.
Maxim No 5: Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle, for this is the winning edge.
Maxim No 6: Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
Maxim No 7: Carry the fight to our opponents and leave it there for 60 minutes”

“I can't disagree with anything in that last post. I mainly wanted to point out that the score issue is not what it seems. Those long runs were giving up because we had to gamble and run blitz to try and get the ball back. Field position football was over at that point.

The kick fielding was autrocious sp?. #4 would lead the country in returns if he had enough returns to qualify. The whole country got to see why the ball gets kicked to the other guy. Until the LSU game he was also our punt returner. He won't set foot on the field this week.”

Stanford has played well at times, but, except for the San Jose and USC games, has been almost completely unable to actually score TD's. Our kicker had a nice streak earlier in the season, but missed 3 very makeable FG's last Saturday, so even those look to be unlikely. I’ve always enjoyed Michigan/Ohio St.. It has lost some of it’s luster, but it’s still a great national rivalry even though it isn’t as old as Auburn/Georgia, Clemson/South Carolina, Missouri/Kansas, Oregon/Oregon St., Purdue/Indiana, Texas/Texas A&M, or Utah/Utah St. (to name only a few of the rivalries that are older). But it still has a sort of… has-been charm to it.




Bwaaaahahahahaha. Just give me an opening, Dayhiker. I remember when we had Florida State down by 28 in the fourth quarter and they came back to tie the game. I don’t care who your playing, you have a responsibility to your team to keep playing hard and to the best of your ability. I agree with trailhound’s maxims. And when you’ve got a good team, with a great offense, that means lots of points.

I have heard very little grumbling about ANYBODY running up the score since Spurrier left. The media loves to hate the guy and some folks jumped all over that bandwagon. He was good to his players, took all the blame for losses, gave all the glory to his players for wins, he loved to make jokes about his opponents in the thin-skinned world of sports, had no patience for so-called “experts”, and he ran a squeaky clean program. Yeah, watta jerk.

“You are absolutely right, hound. Spurrier was never known for his recruiting. But a lot of talented kids wanted to play for him. His recruiting classes were usually good despite the fact he would have rather been golfing. Steve never liked the politics of schmoozing recruits. He was never a salesman, he was a coach.

On the subject of recruiting, oh joy, Let me recount this story ONE MORE TIME:

Spurrier not only didn’t like the so-called media experts, he also thought the recruiting-class-ranking pundits had too much influence and importance (with good reason considering how many NFL players there are from small colleges. How did the recruiting services overlook those guys?).

For a few years, Georgia’s recruiting class was ranked above the gators. So one year, while responding to a question about recruiting, and defending the talent level of his players, Spurrier said, “If Georgia keeps out-recruiting us, how come they can’t beat us?”

This was an obvious poke at the recruiting pundits and the media sports writers who put so much importance on them. But as a man once said, “Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel.”

So what does the media do? In a typical Spurrier-slanted article, an Atlanta sports pundit writes this long and angry tirade about how Steven Orr Spurrier insulted Ray Goff as being a lousy coach because he can’t beat the gators with superior talent.

It was a jaw-dropping article. But the really jaw-dropping thing was how many sports fans believed it and how it fed the “I hate Spurrier” bandwagon.

Just watch how that attitude changes at the school he coaches. Most fans would love to have him. Jealousy is an ugly emotion.
