If Bama had scored it would have been 17-6 and basically over. Instead LSU got the interception and ran it back to about the 50. It changed the total game. As far as the scores go, they came late on long runs while Bama was run blitzing to try and gamble to get the ball back. The final score is not an indicator of how the game played out. As far as statistics go, see above. We had about 50% more offense at that point in the game. LSU wasn't doing squat. Their offense came late on a few plays. If it wasn't a penalty then why has the SEC publicly appologized and privately called Shula to say they blew it? Bama majorly screwed the pooch on the kickoff returns, or lack thereof. The point is, though, is that LSU wasn't moving the ball at all. Thanks to what happened later, they didn't really have to.” 1:16:42 PM 11/17/04 “What's the old joke, How long can a football team live off a dead bear?” 1:20:13 PM 11/17/04 “What do a bama fan and a maggot have in common.....they both can live off a dead bear” 1:25:34 PM 11/17/04 “chili, chili, chili, I think you can agree that the ebb and flow of any game does matter. last edited: 11/17/04 1:27:01 PM” 1:26:46 PM 11/17/04 “I put that on a Bama board one time and it got deleted. I actually think it's a funny joke. The sad part is that it really does apply to tons of Bama fans. The actual punchline is that they can both live off a dead bear for 20 years.” 1:27:51 PM 11/17/04 “That's the one! But then again, almost everything at Michigan has the name Shembechler worked into somehow. But he was a REAL coach.” 1:33:34 PM 11/17/04 “You're just a master baiter Nigal.” 1:35:59 PM 11/17/04 “2 minutes 25 seconds...that actually took longer than I thought it would. LOL!” 1:37:37 PM 11/17/04 “I was reading a Bama Football board and felt the pull of a heretic over here.” 1:40:35 PM 11/17/04 “I crack up reading all you fans with young football programs talking about your rivalries and grand traditions. The first ever collegiate game was played at Rutgers. We have a long tradition of suckdom which goes all the way back to the second game. Pikers!” 2:12:26 PM 11/17/04 “Gee violin, does that make Rugers the suck masters?” 2:25:15 PM 11/17/04 “If it wasn't a penalty then why has the SEC publicly appologized and privately called Shula to say they blew it? dayhiker A lot of your reasoning seems to be wouldof /shouldof speculation. I didn't exactly say it was not by the letter of the law it was not a penalty. And after seeing that ESPN showed it about 15 times in review, maybe a penalty should have been called. Call it the “’99 Revenge of Booty” if ya like (who remembers?). However, it was not a blatant as most bamer homers have cried about and for the bama nation to say this one play lost them the entire game with over 2 quarters left to play is nuts. In most every team related sporting event game there are possible hundreds of penalties that are essentially are no-calls for various reasons. Especially in football, I truly believe in letting the players play. In this situation because of where the pass was thrown (flat and on the defenders right shoulder) Brown only had a chance to go thought the LSU defender and knock down the ball. Yeah, there was contact but from the replay the contact didn't appear to be initiated primarily be either player. Nice no-call IMHO. last edited: 11/17/04 2:58:07 PM” 2:56:57 PM 11/17/04 “Seems like every commentator that saw the play as well as the referees after review disagree with you on the call. It changed the entire flow of the game. Surely you can agree on that. Whether Bama would have held onto what would have been a 9 point lead remains to be seen. I will add that when I saw it in real time I thought it was a penalty. The first replay I thought Brown was off balance and probably wasn't pushed as hard as appeared. The third review I thought it was a penalty. The reason Brown would've had to go through the defender is he was on the ground. He he kept moving he and the db would've roughly been at the same spot.” 3:01:48 PM 11/17/04 “The reason Brown would've had to go through the defender is he was on the ground. He he kept moving he and the db would've roughly been at the same spot.” dayhiker Wrong, the ball was supposed to be a quick throw over a well covered receiver's left shoulder. Instead the defender and receiver had to come back to the ball two steps toward the center of the field. It’s extremely rare for a post pattern to be run into the end zone. If the receiver and the defender could have switched uniforms the call would have been the same. Also, Brown obviously needs to hit the weight room. I'll say it changed the flow of the game and admit that neither UT nor Bama is good enough this year to overcome many bad calls. But I refuse to follow Finebaumism that this cost Bama the game. Bama simply got beat. That same reasoning can be made in the AU/TN game earlier this year. Only if Angie hadn't of thrown 6 INT we would have won. Or if Schaeffer and Angie hadn't got hurt UT would have won against ND. The fact of the matter is that UT lost to opponents who executed great gameplans. Hopefully, next year UT will be good enough to overcome injuries.” 3:25:40 PM 11/17/04 “I don't listen to Finebaum and don't know what he's saying. I imagine it's whatever he feels like will light up his incoming calls line. In this case it would be for Bama to play the victim. Please understand that I don't subscribe the all the crap you hear on Finebaum or the message boards. I'm just saying that at that point we were ahead, we would've increased our lead, it changed the entire flow of the game, and it is somewhat likely that we would have kept the lead. LSU would've had to start passing more. Going into this game we had the #1 pass defense in the country. We'd have been in good shape with that. Also, the play happened a bit later in the game than you mentioned, if memory serves. I've already said on this thread that Bama is not good enough to overcome a bad call. We probably won't be next year either. I feel like it'll be 2006 before we are. If we could pass this year then I like our chances in all 4 of our losses. Yall had 2 plays against us and that's about it. But you had the 2 plays and we didn't, you won. There's a similar story against Ark and USC too.” 3:34:08 PM 11/17/04 ““Good teams overcome bad calls....” Dayhiker So what you’re saying here is that a good team will run up the score so high that the zebras can't make a difference. I agree that teams should be allowed to run up the score without second-guessing from the political correctly afflicted, but I disagree with the logic of your statement. A good team, playing another good team, should be an evenly matched game. The zebras can decide a close game with bad calls that can unfairly advantage one good team over another. I heard that the head of the crew was the same one as the UF/Tenn game, but the guy who made the bad personal foul/clock calls was not there. I wonder if they quietly suspended him? You probably had better refs than we did. Gosh I love the way you try to make your point with facts. Been there, done that. Believe me, very few are listening. College football is all about momentum. That’s why I love the game so much. To me, you make a compelling argument. Are you serious, Bowlderman? The spread is 24.5 and I was looking at betting that game. Do you seriously think I should go there? After all, it is a rivalry game. Yo, Nigal, don’t insult Dayhiker like that! Oh, I see you already apologized. You’re a sweetheart, but you’re WRONG again! As our season progresses, I have developed much more respect for you, violin. I am spoiled. I bow to a true long-suffering fan. That's how I used to be.” 3:47:07 PM 11/17/04 “How did I know that arc would turn this into Spurriers God given right to run up the score? The memories are good, aren't they. Oh how I miss the '92, '94, '99, and '02 seasons. As Ahhhnold says, "We'll be back!" I just don't see how anyone can say that call didn't have a huge impact in the game. My opinion is that it changed the winner.” 3:54:31 PM 11/17/04 “Yeah, I just turned it on Finebaum for a few minutes yesterday and can not believe how he continues to paints his bama audience as victims. I guess anything to get an audience. To be honest, you one of the few Bama fans I enjoy reading post from. Anyway, I do believe every game there are a few plays make a the difference. However, I also belive in Bama's case there was a combo of mistakes that cost them the game besides the unfortunate call. Bad kicking and field position game (this really can kill ya as much as the next one), turnovers, too many 3 and outs, and general lack of execition on both sides of the ball. All can be sumed up in General Neyland's 7 Maxims. Maxim No 1: The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. Maxim No 2: Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE SCORE SCORE! Maxim No 3: If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up ... put on more steam. Maxim No 4: Protect our kickers, our quarterback, our lead and our ballgame. Maxim No 5: Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle, for this is the winning edge. Maxim No 6: Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made. Maxim No 7: Carry the fight to our opponents and leave it there for 60 minutes” 4:03:14 PM 11/17/04 “I can't disagree with anything in that last post. I mainly wanted to point out that the score issue is not what it seems. Those long runs were giving up because we had to gamble and run blitz to try and get the ball back. Field position football was over at that point. The kick fielding was autrocious sp?. #4 would lead the country in returns if he had enough returns to qualify. The whole country got to see why the ball gets kicked to the other guy. Until the LSU game he was also our punt returner. He won't set foot on the field this week.” 4:06:29 PM 11/17/04 “The 24½ point spread is a joke. That'll be the score at the end of the first quarter, rivalry game or not. Stanford has played well at times, but, except for the San Jose and USC games, has been almost completely unable to actually score TD's. Our kicker had a nice streak earlier in the season, but missed 3 very makeable FG's last Saturday, so even those look to be unlikely. Remember, Cal is still smarting from losing 7 years in a row, and would love to run up the score because of that, as well as to impress the pollsters.” 4:15:58 PM 11/17/04 5:38:57 PM 11/17/04 “The last sentence in that link is puzzling. OSU's ineptitude in big games is what makes this a rivalry?” 5:44:05 PM 11/17/04 “We switch off decades. OSU, the 70's, Michigan, the 90's, OSU the 00's. :) Now that's a rivalry!” 5:51:14 PM 11/17/04 “I'd love to get back to the days when Bama and Auburn were good at the same time. It's just not there and hasn't been for several years. It's a big rivalry, but the level of hate portrayed by the media is a bit overstated.” 5:54:16 PM 11/17/04 “Nothing overstated by this: Michigan is a bunch of dickus bonesmoking losers! Go Bucks!” 5:56:37 PM 11/17/04 “Hey, Nigal, can you answer a question for me? Who does Michigan play this weekend? I hear that they need one more win to go to the Rose Bowl. And after beating our big rival, Michigan State, that sure would be nice.” 6:22:57 PM 11/17/04 “Oh, my bad, I just looked it up. They're playing Ohio University, I think. Anyone know anything about them?” 6:25:13 PM 11/17/04 “I heard of them I think. They're one of those teams that everyone wants to play the first two weeks of the season so they can get a good start? Purdue is very familure with them...” 6:42:51 PM 11/17/04 “I'll keep an eye out for ya Buddha while I'm watching. Now just so we're clear; you'll be the guy holding up the John Kerry 3:16 sign, right? Enjoy the game and don't forget to pee before ya go to your seat.” 6:46:35 PM 11/17/04 “Given recent events, Ohio State finds itself in the unusual position of trying to win a national championship with a 6 and 4 record. Too bad it's the 2002 national championship. rim shot!” 7:02:02 PM 11/17/04 “But I guess that's what Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes used to mean when they talked about a "mythical national championship."” 7:04:38 PM 11/17/04 “Thanks for the insight Bowlder. I’m all over it! I’ve always enjoyed Michigan/Ohio St.. It has lost some of it’s luster, but it’s still a great national rivalry even though it isn’t as old as Auburn/Georgia, Clemson/South Carolina, Missouri/Kansas, Oregon/Oregon St., Purdue/Indiana, Texas/Texas A&M, or Utah/Utah St. (to name only a few of the rivalries that are older). But it still has a sort of… has-been charm to it. Bwaaaahahahahaha. Just give me an opening, Dayhiker. I remember when we had Florida State down by 28 in the fourth quarter and they came back to tie the game. I don’t care who your playing, you have a responsibility to your team to keep playing hard and to the best of your ability. I agree with trailhound’s maxims. And when you’ve got a good team, with a great offense, that means lots of points. I have heard very little grumbling about ANYBODY running up the score since Spurrier left. The media loves to hate the guy and some folks jumped all over that bandwagon. He was good to his players, took all the blame for losses, gave all the glory to his players for wins, he loved to make jokes about his opponents in the thin-skinned world of sports, had no patience for so-called “experts”, and he ran a squeaky clean program. Yeah, watta jerk. Jus give me an opening. I’ll beat that horse. I have faith that not everyone is as stupid as most sports writers.” 6:20:44 AM 11/18/04 “Do the words Tank Black mean anything to you?” 6:34:02 AM 11/18/04 “I didn't catch your sports writers comment til I hit send. A famous Coach Bryant quote is that he was asked for $10 to pitch in to help with a sportwwriters funeral, "Here's $20, bury two."” 6:34:56 AM 11/18/04 I can't believe I'm the first to post this “Looks like it’s all but official that Coach Spurrier is back in college football at USC. I must say I have enjoyed the message board chatter from Cock fans who, believe they will be win the NC in two years. Yeah, it could happen but one thing old Steve is not known for is recruiting. Nor do I believe he is a long term fix. last edited: 11/18/04 12:33:50 PM” 12:32:19 PM 11/18/04 “Dude, we are going to kick your a$$, if we don't I'm going to get the $100 I gave to AJ Hawk back. :)” 12:58:45 PM 11/18/04 “Trailhound, when Holtz went there, the GameCock fans began to talk about the NC they were going to win 3 years ago.” 2:56:50 PM 11/18/04 Bless their hearts! “Why did you remind me?” 3:27:09 PM 11/18/04 “Holtz is old and frail” 3:39:00 PM 11/18/04 Iron Bowl Shmiron Bowl! “I'm with Nigal, even with the funny spelling, on this one. The DAWGS are gonna chomp on Arkansaw this weekend!” 3:39:38 PM 11/18/04 “You are absolutely right, hound. Spurrier was never known for his recruiting. But a lot of talented kids wanted to play for him. His recruiting classes were usually good despite the fact he would have rather been golfing. Steve never liked the politics of schmoozing recruits. He was never a salesman, he was a coach. On the subject of recruiting, oh joy, Let me recount this story ONE MORE TIME: Spurrier not only didn’t like the so-called media experts, he also thought the recruiting-class-ranking pundits had too much influence and importance (with good reason considering how many NFL players there are from small colleges. How did the recruiting services overlook those guys?). For a few years, Georgia’s recruiting class was ranked above the gators. So one year, while responding to a question about recruiting, and defending the talent level of his players, Spurrier said, “If Georgia keeps out-recruiting us, how come they can’t beat us?” This was an obvious poke at the recruiting pundits and the media sports writers who put so much importance on them. But as a man once said, “Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel.” So what does the media do? In a typical Spurrier-slanted article, an Atlanta sports pundit writes this long and angry tirade about how Steven Orr Spurrier insulted Ray Goff as being a lousy coach because he can’t beat the gators with superior talent. It was a jaw-dropping article. But the really jaw-dropping thing was how many sports fans believed it and how it fed the “I hate Spurrier” bandwagon. Just watch how that attitude changes at the school he coaches. Most fans would love to have him. Jealousy is an ugly emotion. Sports picks this week: California to cover 24 Tennessee to cover 12.5 Florida getting 7 Rutgers getting 4.5 Uconn to cover 25 Cincinnati to cover 11.5” 6:29:09 AM 11/19/04 “Tommy Tuberville: ”7:20:31 AM 11/19/04 “Go Hawks! Ya gots the buck-teeth Gophers, now get those buck-teeth Badgers!” 8:21:35 AM 11/19/04 “Dyhiker, that is friggin hilarious!” 8:24:56 AM 11/19/04 “I'm off to enemy territory tomorrow (Berzerkely). Taking a work friend who has never been to a college game, although he's quite knowledgeable about football. He keeps saying he's planning to wear blue and yellow, despite my insistence on wearing red, or at least not blue and yellow. I will take my camera and submit a trip report on Sunday or Monday. Actually, I think the game is on national TV (Fox), so watch for me - I'll be the one wearing red and white! The one good thing about this game tomorrow is that the stadium at Kal is a great place to watch a game. In order to preserve physical safety, let's hope Stanford doesn't pull the big upset....” 8:26:29 AM 11/19/04 “dayhiker, that might be your best work yet.” 8:31:58 AM 11/19/04 “I wish I could take credit. How about this: ”8:35:31 AM 11/19/04 “Watch out folks. The man's on fire.” 8:38:02 AM 11/19/04 “LMDAO” 8:39:00 AM 11/19/04 Jump to Page << prev
