“It would appear from some responses to this thread that some definitely won't be using the offered 20% coupon. I will not be using it either. It is not because I don't like REI. It is because I have most everything I need right now.

Personally, I like it when people post discount coupons or a chance to save some $ on outdoor gear. I was sharing a discount.

I would certainly appreciate other folks sharing discounts on outdoor gear when they come across them. It is always my choice on whether to use the discount.

You can go to a dozen etailers, compare, buy, OR print off their price lists and run down to your local brick and mortar outdoor shop and see if they can beat the prices. There are enough gear reviews out there to eventually figure out whether it's junk or not.”

“Rad - obviously I don't work for REI any longer, duh! When I began there REI was still a cool place to work...cool people to work with, good management, good company philosophy, and customers who were real. However, things changed for the worse. They outgrew their facility in Seattle (where good employees were plentiful) and moved to a small town away from a smart and outdoors-savvy workforce. Switchback is correct... most (my estimate 80%) of my co-workers were housewifes who went camping once in their lives.
Management became focused only on profits and growth and lost touch with their origins. Customers changed from real outdoors users to rich wannabes who wanted to pretend to look the part. REI caters to the rich (AVERAGE member's income over $75,000) who don't mind paying for overpriced gear...as long as they look cool in their TNF logo.

REI used to be cool...but that was then.”

The last time they offered a sale like this it was for 20% off ANY item in the store (catalogue, online) that wasn't already on sale.

That's how I got my pocket rocket so cheap..

The only thing that bothers me is if you buy something on sale or clearance, it doesn't count towards your dividend.

I left REI as soon as I saw the early signs of trouble, and many of my friends also quit when the problems were fully apparent in 2000.”
