Lithium

“Tawkin 'bout batteries, I noticed a bunch of discussion on the LED headlamp thread...
Some say titanium batteries are the way to go(lighter) and others say lithium(longevity). Who uses what here and why? Just curious.

I used Lithium batteries for the first time this past trip and they held up very well in the cold and with the lengthy use of the headlamp.

Lithium is supposed to hold a charge longer especially in COLD temps. They are also supposed to hold a more constant charge. When they die, they die quickly.

During the winter, they should be better to use than Alkies. Are they worth the cost???? dunno?”

“I use lithium batteries in my GPS at work, a AA Mag light (for work), my Krill light, my LED minilights, and in a single AA AM/FM radio. In most aplications they last about 3 times as long as alkaline (some up to 5 times), and weigh about 1/2 as much. They will also keep a charge for years without dying unlike alkaline.

I'm very carefull about buying BP equipment requiering power that I can use lithium batteries because of the total weigh savings, and the reliability factor. I went through 3 sets of AA alkaline batteries in a 2 week hike for my mag light, now I can make several trips of the same set.

Imagine it this way, 3 sets of AA weigh 6 times as much as one set of AA lithium to take their place. I cary 3 AA lithiums, and 2 PA2016 lithiums as back ups to all my lights, radio, etc. They weigh less than 2oz.”

“Hehehe, problem I ran into buying them once at Wal-Mart. I was buying three AA lithium 4 packs to take on a long field excersise for my GPS (takes 8), my mag light (takes two) and spares. Got to check out and the cash register said max 2 per customer. Asked the sales clerk why that was - aparently teenagers have some technique of getting the lithium out to get high. Wal-Mart limits the amount per customer because they don't want to supply lithiunm dealers. I bought two packs, and my wife had to buy the third.”

“Too funny. I never would have guessed you could get high on them. I was just going to agree with everything in your first post. I have used nothing but lithium for several years. I think the cost difference averages out. I wish they came in AAA too.”

“I read on another site if you open up the 9v lithiums, they have 6 AAAA lithiums in them. With a little engineering, you can make a AAAA lithium work in a AAA space. I just make sure I get AA appliances. Unfortunately my camera takes AAA for the flash.”

“Rock is Right... I've been using lithiums for quite a while. In fact, I'm still oin the same set I put in my GPS last July. Like Rick, I make sure that the things I need power for will run on AA's, though they make 'em in "D" size, too. They last, they're light, and more cost effective than alkalines.

Furthermore, with the advent of LED technology, these types are fast becoming the "in" lighting gear to own. Most of these take some form of lithium coin batteries, making not only the batteries light, but also the gear in which they fit.
