Internet Hiking Partners-Poll
Bpbasecamp has a poll similar to the one below that is heavily weighted to "No" on the following question. I suspect there might be a different trend here. How about it?

Have you ever used the internet to find hiking partners: VOTE

>Yes
or

I am supposed to be at the trailhead right now. My true friends will understand that I am late and make me go first across midnight creek crossings, steal my tent pegs at 1 am., eat all my jerky, break whatever I loan them, and tell me what a sh!t head I am.

I wouldn't dare hike with people I didn't know. What would they do????

RE: Internet Hiking Partners-Poll
What does Basecamp know, anyway?
I left hanging out there 'cause I knew more than they did (unless it came to eating roaches, worms or camping naked in Terra del Fuego).
Raddy....
What's this nonsense about your fish keeping your food fresh?

RE: Internet Hiking Partners-Poll
bpbasecamp is slow and broken down, even if a few good people hang out there. Its broken right now, I went back to see if new numbers were up.

The only reason I mentioned it is that I had a feeling the numbers would be different there than the places I hang out, and they are.

RE: Internet Hiking Partners-Poll
Actually When I first came to this site I wasn't looking for a partner. I was just enjoying discussing BPing with folks from all around. As it turned out I've meet some great fun people here.
Before my first TT hike, I was hiking with people from the Tenn Trails Ass. but nobody in that club "clicked" with me. It's nice to hike with people that tend to cuss as much as myself. LOL! The TTA folks were kinda "goodie goodie" that way.

Pathman, 84% are looking for male/female interaction here because the hikers here are hornier than the backpacker hikers, lol.

You know better than I, heh, heh.

I wasn't so interested in the motivation, just showing that backpackers ARE meeting other backpackers on the internet. And that the people here and at OAN are a little different from the sample at bpbasecamp. From the comments, it meeting others on the internet has been a good experience, too. No ax murderers, or at least the victims haven't spoken up.

Before I posted it here I left it up for a day on OAN and got similar results with a small sample. I'm not sure the motivation is the same there. ;-)

in the assistant principal's parking space at our high school, there was a sign that read "ASS PRINCIPAL".

someone had picked the "T" off. and they left it that way for about 3 years!

RE: Internet Hiking Partners-Poll
Pathman, seriously, I think more people meet up here, because of Phil's Picture Page. It's an easier feeling to meet people if you could see their pictures first.

I don't have any personal experience in finding dates through tt since I am married, but if I were single, I would give it a try.

Pathman, also, when I said that people are hornier here than in the backpacker, I meant basecamp (The Backpacker Magazine posting site).

Some people here may think this site "thebackpacker" is part of "The Backpacker Magazine", which it is not.

RE: Internet Hiking Partners-Poll
I'll admit it, I've used the internet to find hiking partners too! As much as I like the peace & serenity that go hand in hand with solo hiking, having someone to help warm the tent on a cold night is also a good thing! I guess I'd be inclined to agree with Lipstick! ;-)
