Through the pony gate camp should be on your right about 200 yards up the AT. Sat. take the AT up the Rhododendron gap trail (4612).Stop at spring on left just off trail before reaching the Gap water up. Head over to the Crest trail follow it south bound to the Virgina Highlands Horse trail camp site is just up a little hill to the right after the trails cross. hope this helps every one this is coping a TT trip from last year this time. I will try to be at the campsite early Fri. after noon It is not hard to hike up to this Fri. night spot late as me and my wife did last year” 6:37:11 AM 8/09/12 “Then Sun it is a mostly down hill hike out to the AT then the APS to the parking lot.” 6:40:00 AM 8/09/12 “If I am ambitious I may wander over that way for Friday just to say hi - I'll be camping over in or nearby Scales.” 10:00:51 AM 8/09/12 “Come on over I was looking trying to see a good day hike over that way to see you but It seem like a long way out of the way but I will try to cross paths with you.” 3:32:23 AM 8/10/12 lonewolf “lonewolf is this hike still on????? After walking around alot nephew hugry not so happy. choose campsite up AT on the left placed a sign at the trail registration board ate dinner nephew now happy again. kept looking in on other sites and went for a little hike looked like rain so we gatherd a little wood and started a fire went to bed around 10:00 rain started around 11:30 worried about my Hammock set up did not sleep well until around five am but from then until nine sleep like a baby My nephew was in my Spitfire by Eureka was very dry but thoght the cyoties were wolves so he did not sleep until late as well so we did not hit the trail until 9:45 my nephew just had to take the AT to Rhodadendron gap so he could see fat man sqeeze. After stopping at the spring on the west side of the gap for a begel and cheese lunch and watering up.We could see people camped on top of the ridge hoping that it was some one from TT we left out on the crest trail my nephew now changing moods asked how far out and how long the drive home I could tell some thing was up . After some questioning I could tell he did not want another night out that is about the time the bee struck! Oop! left Epipen at home so we hurried up to the campers No one we knew so we took off for the parking lot Reached there around 3:45 for some reason no Allergic reaction to the sting so we headed for home.picking up dinner in Sparta at BK we cruised home later I found out Nephew got text a big group of his buddies were getting online to play some vidie game today oh well we had one great day out until the bee. next time I will make sure that pen is on my packing list” 4:03:55 PM 8/19/12 “Lol....how old is your nephew? I had to drag my kids backpacking! But drag I did...” 5:58:29 PM 8/19/12 Lol....how old is your nephew? “15 years old the funny part was he kept asking me when we were going to go to the mountains and backpack.” 6:26:59 AM 8/20/12 “My biggest complainer turned out to be my best hiker. She had drop her butt down "I'm not moving" mutinies, several times. Screaming at us.. me and my wife would just laugh, keep walking. After all, we had the food. All that catching up to us is probably made her a good hiker.” 7:37:32 AM 8/20/12 “I did try to find y'all on Friday at about 3-4 but could not find where you were camping - the campsites next to the boundary on the AT were empty when I got there btw I am also allergic to bee stings so my sympathy is extended to the allergic” 11:14:14 AM 8/20/12 “Just missed you, we did not get to the campsites until 4:45 to 5:00 then walked around alot on the horse trail and even the Gap trail (sorry)” 6:05:58 AM 8/22/12 << back to Berry fun trip page
