Hmmm, so me and kiddies just did a test run on making your own gorp. The gorp we made cost us 29 cents an ounce. I just bought some at Wal-Mart and the cost per oz is 19.1 cents (not included taxes on the latter figure, but that would still only put it at 20 cents an oz or so, with the food tax here in NC).

Not good, I'da thawt we wudda done better. But....... I had all premium stuff in our gorp ..... choc covered raisins, banana chips, craisins, sunflower seeds, even a lil pack of pumpkin seeds, and the better quality box of granola cereal.

But for the Walmart bags of gorp, they had several different kinds: tropical, nutty, a cupla others, all priced the same..... $4.98 for a 26 oz bag.

Yaknow nearly a dime an ounce... I thawt we'da come closer than that.

Anyways, a lil experiment we did, thawt I'd share.

Cool. I mix my organic trail mix from the bulk bin at a local bulk store.

I found an affordable online source for hemp seeds... high in nutritional value, I wonder how they would taste mixed in with gorp...

Gremlin I think that's the trick, just baggin different stuff from bulk sellers. I'd hafta go to the "big city" of Asheville for them kinda services tho.

Gem I thawt one obtained hemp seeds for something totally different......

Additives twig? Everything I had was "additives", atter we dumped the granola cereal. Kids had fun mixing it up in the big bowls.

One note of caution if you try this experiment...... it has to be hidden afterwards, else your investment very quickly depreciates.

we do the same thing. When you start buying organic nuts, seeds and dried fruit it gets expensive. The taste is well worth it though plus it fills you up versus the prepackaged stuff you can buy

Interesting experiment, Ape. I rarely make my own (just been buying the Trader Joe's brand whatever for a couple of years now), but I should get in the swing of that more. I am not suprised to hear that wally world beats out everyone.

A few years back we had a contest in our boyscout troop as to who could make the best tasting GORP... As I recall the winning GORP had freetos, gummeybears, goobers, peanuts, pretzels and a few other things..

Grrr 32, that win however lends aide to a fat troop...... and a fatter scout master....

Rosey I don't have a clue as to why Asheville don't yet have a Trader Joe's! It's a beautiful, dynamic city, particularly located in a beautiful area with the Blue Ridge Parkway practically going thru it, surrounded by mountains, forests, farms, and sheer redneckness, and ta boot..... it's the second largest homo city after San Fran! Shewt, it could support 2 Trader Joe's most assuredly! The closest to me now are 5 stores in N Atlanta, bout 2 fast hours away, or 2 of'em were built in Charlotte 3 hours away last year. Too far!

naked ape, just go to Whole foods in Asheville. http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/asheville/

It has a lot better selection than Trader Joe's

Not really... it was in preperation for an AT hike around the Crab Tree Falls, Priest, Spy Rock area.. Any calories consumed were burned off on the 3000 ft climb up the priest...
