Missing Hiker in Southern California

Hope he turns up all right. The area he's missing in isn't anything too treacherous so hopefully he's just a little lost...

Simi Valley police and Ventura County sheriff's rescuers have set up a command center this morning at a Simi Valley Metrolink station to search for a former professional football player reported missing while hiking.

The search for Erik Affholter, 46, of Simi Valley began about 10 p.m. Sunday after his girlfriend called authorities to report he hadn't returned as expected from a day hike, Simi police Lt. Mike King said.

The woman reported that she dropped Affholter off at a trailhead behind the Metrolink station at 5050 Los Angeles Ave. about 10 a.m. Sunday for a hike and expected him to return in the afternoon, King said...

They ended the search about 1 p.m. today after confirming that Affholter had talked on the phone with his ex-wife in Arizona and his mother as late as 8 a.m. today, Simi police Sgt. Craig Dungan said.

Police had not yet contacted Affholter directly, and they could not say exactly where he has been, but they think he is fine, Dungan said.
