There was a documentry shown on PBS a few years back about a guy (in the 60s??) that went off the live in the Alaskan back country. This dude did it right and had a great experience.

Can't remember his name; I highly suggest it -- it's a great time waster.

They mention him in the article; I think his name was Carl Proenneke?

Richard Proenneke... lived in almost entirely the wild for 30 years. Good lord...

There are a lot of people 'living off the land" in southern California. Some even in beautiful wilderness areas. You won't freeze to death here.
