Sad, but seems true
Reward offered in Ind. hiker death investigation

AMHERST, Va. (AP) — A $10,000 reward is being offered for information about the death of an Indiana hiker along the Appalachian Trail in Virginia.

Media outlets report that investigators announced the reward Monday at a news conference in Amherst.

Hikers found Scott Lilly's body on Aug. 12, 2011, just off the trail in the Mount Pleasant National Scenic Area east of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Amherst County. An autopsy showed the 30-year-old South Bend, Ind., man died from asphyxiation.

FBI Agent Steven Duenas says authorities haven't found most of Lilly's belongings, including a pair of Ozark Trail hiking shoes.

Duenas says investigators believe Lilly was last seen alive on July 31, 2011, at the Cow Camp Gap trail shelter, a short distance from where his body was found.

He obviously wasn't murdered for his shoes.

..and why tell us about the shoes and nothing else? Seems a particular pack/tent combination would be a more distinguishing characteristic than a pair of Ozark trails. The has to be a gazzillion of them out there. Too late now to do any good any way.

Here's more.

I don't get the focus on the hiking shoes either as a way to find the killer. But at the same time, I can't stop thinking that the shoes are key simply because they are such a strange thing to take. I mean, who would want a pair of thru hiker shoes? They had to be beat up. You can sell the pack and gear. But probably not used boots? So whoever has them, might be wearing them. Who knows?

I am getting ready to do a solo hike in Virginia, and all this news has me shaken.

They don't have a picture of him wearing his pack? Blue or Purple? Really? Info seems really slim at this late stage.

The video shows him wearing a pack, but it's really hard to tell the color or model.

Truly unfortunate. When I hike the trail I always have two companions with me. Mosby (Wolf/Husky mix) and Sam Colt (specificaly his .44 cal. Army revolver. The parking area's for the trail on Blue Mntn. were notorious for criminal activity until the local Militia started to include them in their patrol area. Now that activity is greatly reduced. Always be aware of you'r surroundings when hiking, especially alone.

This happened last year. You weren't shaken when you planned your trip?

Another report stated that the last guy pictured in Stratdoods report was mad at society because he purchased an Opti-Grab from Nevin Campbell.

The reason I wasn't shaken when I planned the trip is because I had kind of forgotten about this. Now that it's back in the news again, I am reminded that they haven't caught the killer.

Sam Colt (specificaly his .44 cal. Army revolver

Seems like an odd choice for BPing. Open carry?

Especially since it's black powder. Hey, I guess it doubles as a signaling device!

You can get jacked walking down the street...probably more likely to happen there than in the backcountry.

Actually when properly smithed and tuned an excellent choice. I carry a spare cylinder so reloading is a snap. It packs a wallop at 35yrds, for a pistol is good enough. I carry in a shoulder rig witch fits nicely next to my ruck strap and definetly open carry. More people are eyeballing Mosby than me so it takes anyone a while to spot it. When just working around the property or walking the roads here it is in a "Slim Jim" holster on my belt.

To complete your vintage theme, shouldn't you be carrying a Lugar? ..or a broomhandle Mauser?

There is all kinds of various levels of nut jobs out there. I'm sure areas along and around the AT are no different.

Luger would be nice. An MP40 would be better!

Except that it's heavy and big. But, whatever floats your boat.
