Tent Help
I'm looking for ideas of what to buy for a noob who wants to go backpacking. It needs to be freestanding, reliable shelter. Preferably not too expensive and should fit a guy whose 6 foot 2. Any ideas what I should look for? Mid range gear should be fine. We want something better than Ozark Trail or Sierra Design (unless SD is more reliable than I think it is. . .?)

Thanks for the help!

You didn't specify how big...

SD is plenty reliable from my experience.

Also, the REI line of tents. The Half Dome was the staple for a while.

SD is a decent brad. I don't own any, but have known several who did.

oh ok. I'll look at some SD stuff. I use the REI orig. Quarter Dome. Love it. It's been a great tent and stood up to use over the last several years really well. They were a little more than I thought he'd wanta spend.

The tent can be anything from a one to three person tent. I was thinkin a one to two person. Thanks for the advice.

You might consider looking at a Quest brand tent.

Gotta agree with Rosey, the half dome is a great option.

What Zac and Stokely said. I have used Euereka tents bought from www.campmor.com for well over twenty years. They're not the highest tech, nor the lightest, but they're bomber and offer unbeatable value for money, IMO.

Try the below

I have a larger Kelty tent that has survived all sorts of weather. A bit heavy though

Yup, WK, ya just can't have everything.

Heads up to Canucks, MEC tents are great and very ight, but the poles tend to break in high winds.

I used to have a Kelty Tao. It was bombproof and held up well. The drawback was the weight.

I see kelty tents at Target now. Eureka and Kelty are at the sporting goods stores for around $100 bucks routinely.

A nice extra is the tent has a full coverage fly as well as one good sized vestibule. The larger tents have 2.

Soo it was settled with a killer sale on a really splendid Eureka tent that was recommended. I'm not carrying it so the weight doesn't bother me ;) hahahahaha.

That is good to hear. I didn't realize that Eureka was quality. Hopefully the dude will like it. He certainly liked the price ;)

years ago when i was a Scoutmaster, we bought a bunch of Eureka tents for the troop - primarily because of their durability. 12 year old boys are rough on gear!
