It's funny HPD, no matter what you do to get prepared, you still have a pretty hefty break-in period.

My only preparation has been to hike the stairs at the parking deck downtown 3 days a week for 20 minutes (only have a 1/2 hour lunch) and manual labor of cleaning out closets and sheds. My break in may break me

LOL. I had a hard time coming to grips with not being paid while surfing the net when I became self-employed.

Watch out for that Nimblefoot character you're hiking with, he can be trouble!

He took all my cheese-flavored grits!

Last trail entry from Hyway says he overnighted at the Walasi-ye center at Neels Gap. Day 5 and at 31.2 miles. Go Hyway.

Hyway is taking a Zero in Hiawassee today from what I hear.

Hot tubs and heated pools for our boy......

Hyway had mentioned that Nimblefoot was having problems of some sort, and was temporarily off the trail. I hope he's okay.

I will be very surprised if missing the family doesn't cut this trip short. Hopefully he can pull through though.

It sounds like missing the family and the weather really has him down. I do feel like he's laying it all out there for people to see what he's feeling and also to have a record of it. I think when the weather brightens, he will too.

I'm sitting at my brothers place in Wisconsin. There were a few things I needed to straighten out, but none of those were a real factor in not starting out. The only thing that really turned me around was what I would have to deal with (snow, ice and blowdowns) just to get to the Smokey's. Within GSMNP the average snow depth is 3 ft with 7 ft drifts. Not something I plan on risking my only life over. I'll probably return in early April.

I think hyway will be fine.

Physically, he seems to be doing okay. He is listening to his body and adjusting his hike accordingly.

As for his heart, he has a big one and he loves and misses his family. I am sure they miss him too, but at the same time, I have no doubt they are proud of him. Maybe once he finds a trail family, and as the weather improves, the pain of missing home might lessen.

maybe somebody close by can go to where he's at and encourage him? keep the trail magic alive, maybe that is enough.

HPD, have u even met hyway? I have and his character and resolve is beyond reproach.

Maybe he makes it, maybe he doesn't. But your analysis without having met him is as worthless as tits on a boar hog.

Is anybody talking with hyway? He's got my #'s. I can pick him up in Franklin, or at Wesser. He can overnight here from Franklin and Wesser, or he can push on thru to Wesser and take a zero here, recouping.

Yo BEAR!!!!!! Sup ole dawg?

Oh yeah, bout forgot. Day before yesterday I picked up Level, a NY'er. Said he'd had enough butt-busting for a small time. I picked him up hitching in Bryson City and took him to a good Waynesville exit to continue his hitching on to Asheville or Greensboro, to pick up a bus back to NY for 2 weeks rest (misses his gf, aw), and to the let the Trail thaw out some. Last year he hiked from Katadhin to Shanendoah, so this year he started Feb 28 to finish it it up.

What's the deal with ppl wanting to start so early this year? Jes 'bout retarded...... we got'a nother big system coming thru in the next few days too!

My husband and I ended up getting off the trail at Franklin. Too much ice made hiking slow and dangerous. Jim has had knee surgery twice in the past two years (total knee replacement on one side and torn meniscus on the other) - the way he was slip, sliding and falling on the ice and mud made us fear another date with the surgeon. We only intended to hike for six weeks, but it was still disappointing to have to give up. March 1 really is too early, especially this year.

Ginny when did y'all come into Franklin. I could'a picked yuns up.

Good dayhiker, he'd be a fool not to. I read thru his journal last night (thanx Creek Dancer), and several days ago was in Hiawassee, near the GA-NC line. You got any guestimate on when he might arrive into Franklin dayhiker?

Perhaps it'd behoove me to check out that update on his journal........

Hiway if you see this call my cell, I'll get it. My wife is doing nights this week, so if you call from Franklin, nobody is going to answer at home if I'm out. If you shoot straight thru to NOC for a zero day, you can call either one. But... me cell is always in me pocket, regardless whur I'm at or whut I'm up to.

Note to self: hmm perhaps I oughta keep my dawg in heat a "safe" distance when Hiway arrives.........
