“So, last weekend a buddy and i decided to climb Torreys Peak, one of the 14ers here locally. As I was just about back to the trailhead, i passed a group with two men, and 2 or 3 kids, age about 8 to maybe 12 or so. the 12 year old asked me with a bigass grin "Did you make it all the way to the top?" I answered with a big smile, "Sure did - are you going to as well?" His smile faded and he kinda looked down and said "probably not". I looked back at him and said "you know what - so long as your out here in the sun, having a good time with friends or family - it doesn't matter. The top is wherever you decide to turn around" The kid smiled back at me and i wished him a good climb.

I just thought of taht kinda spur of the moment, but i've come to think it applies in a lot of areas.”

“It has been my opinion from the beginning which I have stated here and on the trail that any attempted thruhike that is not completed is a failed thruhike. My time out here may not have been a failure and I will always have many great memories. That doesn't alter that my reason for starting it, ie To finish it in one go, has not been accomplished. It isn't chewing me up inside, nor am I particularly happy about quitting. It just is what it is. Perhaps some day I will be a 2000 miler with a completed section hike of the AT. Perhaps not. But I have had many kind words and great advise sent me my way. I appreciate all of them. I even don't mind the bull#&%!$ on this thread. It is TT as TT ever gets.”

“hiked 23 miles with whippersnap yesterday from near Pine Grove Furnace to the Scott Farm. He was talking about you. I dropped him off at the Scott Farm early this morning and he is going to hike to the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon today. Tomorrow his really long rocky trail days begin. If you decide to keep going, the weather is looking not as hot next week. Maybe I can get you out of the woods for a night or two.”

“I am just biding my time till the weekend when I have a ride home. I suppose I may have a last minute change of mind, but its doubtful. So no need for more ideas, I am done and am not too unhappy about it at the moment. Not looking forward to reentering the rat race but i was going to have to do that sooner or later anyway.”

“Man oh man, I ache for you brother. My mom and step-dad, brother and step-sister and BOTH my mamaws drove on a 2-week trip all the way to Maine ..... half in part to bring my butt back home. After hiking, all I could thank of was "what thuu hell do I do know?".................. Took me a lawng time to get the nerve to tell them I cain't go home with them.

I couldn't just "go home". So I took about 6 weeks hitching back home, staying at places and seeing sights that I'd missed along the AT.

“Hyway. I've met a more than a few NOBO's in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine who seemed to be going to work every day - the mileage goal just another f--ing bill to pay. It seemed they hadn't had much fun for a long while.
While it's good to have goals, there are goals worth suffering almost anything for and one's which aren't. There is wisdom in knowing the difference.”
