Didn't some TTer pretend to NOT finish the AT? Who was it that went all but 2 miles (supposedly). I'm guessing they went the whole way but it wasn't about doing it for other people to that person so they pretended to not finish, keeping the "victory" or the "journey" to himself.

Have you ever actually been backpacking?”

Yes, if by backpacking you mean I walked through the woods with supplies on my back, camped over 1 or more nights. Why? Is that some amazing feat to be proud of?

you may be combining a couple of stories there, hpd. not really sure

there was gforce, who played a little prank, making it seem like he didnt finish when he really did.

then there was nimblefoot, who did all but the last 5 miles, because they closed the trail to katahdin after oct 15th

i imagine that they are probably on the look-out for people doing just that. and i hear the fines are pretty stiff for people who get caught doing it

what was gforce's story?”

after he finished, he posted something along the lines of getting to the top of some mountain in the middle of maine, stopping, and turning around and walking back to the last road-crossing. played it up, making it sound like he quit. he left out the part about that mountain being katahdin

re finishing: Does a person start a marathon just to run?

Of course the goal is to finish.

BUT, do you tell a runner that they "failed" becuase they came up short for some reason?

Get over yourselves folks.

If they failed, they failed. Why pretend otherwise? Encourage them to try again next time. Man, what kind of world do we live in when we pretend out failures are our successes. Failures are beneficial to in that you can learn from them. I'd say pretending that failures are successes just to make yourself feel better are more of a reason to "get over yourselves folks".

are you trying to prove to hyway that you are on his side? so he'll let you buy him ice cream at pine grove furnace?

it is what it is

that means there is no need to label his hike anything. it is whatever it happens to be to him

i dont consider my thru-hike to be a success. it's just something that i did for six months

for other people, their thru-hikes are different things to them. to some people, it WAS all about getting to katahdin. other people, it was all about the journey. for others, they were doing it in the memory of someone, or to raise awareness of something, etc

when hyway gets done, he'll let us know "what it is"

anyways, YOURE the one who brought the false dichotomy of success/failure into it. i never thought about it in terms like that.

all i wanted to convey was IF he wants to finish, then here are some things to consider. because i know that when youre out there, yes, the journey is really the ultimate thing, but you really want to be able to do the whole thing, and those two desires are constantly at war

You're the one making it about me. It was naked ape that started the discussion. Ask him if that's what it is about. There is NOTHING I could ever say to put hyway "on my side". He had his mind made up about me 5 years ago when he believed his own lie about words I never said. He knows I never said them, but spent years letting his own lie fester into hatred. Funny you should ask that though, as if I've ever made an attempt to kiss anybody's butt on here.

anyways, YOURE the one who brought the false dichotomy of success/failure into it. i never thought about it in terms like that.

No. I'm the one who first used the word, but I wasn't the one who brought up "succeeding" and "failing". Several people were talking about it before I chimed in.

I'm just saying that people are "cheering on" the aspect of finishing it - when perhaps they should cheer on the aspect of enjoying it, or making the best out of it, instead. Why assign analytics to his journey?

I hope he finds success in his journey of walking far on a trail, not in his finish.

It's like life. Do you enjoy the joy that comes from your children, or do you relish in the fact that you have children? Hopefully, the former. The fact of having children isn't nearly as important as actually enjoying and spending quality time with them during our limited time here on this little rock in space.

Have some kids of your own............hike your own hike.

If I don't finish then my thruhike has failed. On the otherhand , there is a lot going on around my thruhike that has potential for success/failure without regard to the success of my thruhike.

BTW, I have been asking myself "why" ever since Nimblefoot said "fork this, I'm going home for another month"

One thing a lot of people don't think about is your home-life.

When I did it, both kids had graduated high school, one was in college and the other was working full time. My wife was working and had to manage the home while I was away and it ended up being almost more than she could do. It became stressful to her and me. There were many times I thought about quitting, but I'm glad I never did.

I can only imagine having 3 kids still at home and in school, while the wife is keeping everything under control. That will put stress on anyone and cause a lot of self-doubt. Completing the AT under those circumstances is REALLY an accomplishment.

That pretty much describes it Stovie. It's the little boats that my ancestors built by hand to ply the bayous of my homeland. I grew up on an island in the swamp. Before Huey Long built bridges to get cars to that island the main means of travel was by bateaux. It was how they made their living as well, using their bateaux for the main channels and their pirogue (originally cypress dugouts) in the swamps. By the time I bought my first boat, aluminum johnboats had replaced the wooden bateaux. In was in my grandfathers handmade wooden bateaux that we cut our teeth on however. Now all that has changed, boats made by Sea Ray, Cigarette, Skeeter, etc. made of fiberglass with powerful marine engines rip through the bayous. Most with more money than sense. I liked it much more when you only met a few other bateauxs out on the water. Now you will get ran over in one.
