Is there a difference between the Appalachian Trail and the Appalachian Mountain Trail?

I didn't think so, but I can't remember what they call the trail that contains the AT plus the few hundred miles that runs into Canada. Is that the International Trail?

the AT is springer to katahdin

the AMT comprises the AT, the IAT, BMT, and the pinhoti trail

or something like that. i could be wrong about the pinhoti, and i mightve left out some minor connecting trails.

i dont think it is officially recognised, nor do i think it has any official organization, but when people say they mean to hike the appalachian mountain trail, this is usually what they mean

and, just to add to the confusion, there is the Eastern Continental Trail (ECT), which starts as a road-walk through the florida keys, covers the distance of the florida trail, is a combination of road and trail-walking in alabama, hooks up with the bmt, then the AT, finishing with the IAT (which is in the process of being extended to include an end-to-end of newfoundland)

I followed Hammock hanger on her ECT trek back in 2002 or 2003 (whenever it was) so I knew about that one.

Ok so now I know what they call the trek from springer to Canada.

the southern terminus of the pinhoti to the norther terminus of the IAT is the AMT

there is a river crossing by canoe in maine on the AT. the canoe has a white blaze painted on the floor to satisfy the purists. maybe they should paint a white blaze on the bottom of the ferry that takes you from quebec to newfoundland, otherwise purists would have to swim it
