On a more serious note ...
.. perhaps some of the good friends I made on TT and who abandoned it when it went toxic will come back.

I think the answer is pretty simple: No politics. I have this rule when I go on big campouts with friends of differing political opinions. As soon as a comment pops up, everyone says "NO POLITICS" and it works well to quell the issue. And keep the discussion flowing without allowing it to become negative.

I think if we keep politics outta the discussion, things will remain a lot more civil.

That said, I am not one for moderation, really. In fact, I think moderation sucks because it creates a total nanny arm to the site, so maybe this should be something that is policed internally from the other posters.

There have been some great responses here. I appreciate everyone chiming in, and I have had some good laughs in the process. Clearly, there is a core group that enjoys the forums, and wants to see things improve. Sure, there are Fuego or Chatter options for non backpacking discussion, but the other threads need some TLC.

Keep the suggestions coming, and keep the volunteer emails coming. In the end, we should have a good list of volunteers that will provide balanced moderation. I will likely get us all together on a call, so we can discuss the feedback here, and decide on a moderation strategy.

Am I for real? That sounds like just another distraction from the real topic at hand. Yes, I am for real. I am a hiker, backpacker, mountain biker, rock climber, skier, and a dad who does each and every one of those things with his kids. From my perspective as a relative newby, this forum has been hard to break into, and intimidating. We can fix that. If anything, we want new users who are jazzed about backpacking to join and share their experiences. They can learn a lot from this group.

I am not interested in taking over these forums, instead I am heading the call of many of you, and putting control back in the hands of the volunteer moderators.

Are they going to volunteer to moderate the threads or moderate the volunteers?

Glad to hear it.

I think one reason there is so much fear among us as to what may happen is that it has probably been a year since new members were even allowed. The new poster feature has been broken. The perception has been that the site would be taken out by cutting off the supply of new folks. Your last post sure shoots that down which is a great thing. If new members had even been available, I think the hate on the political debates would have driven them away. This site does need new blood. Glad to hear that is important to you.

The Dutchess of Road Kill

From my perspective as a relative newby, this forum has been hard to break into, and intimidating.

TT has always been an intimidating place to join. Even back in the “good old days” people were called trolls until they backpacked with someone. Until then it was kind of said jokingly, but it was true, you weren’’t part of TT until someone already vetted here backpacked with you. And then you were a full fledged member all the way. Even if you were a jerk, people knew you were a real live jerk and not just a troll. People joined TT because it was a rough place. You stayed here because people weren’’t thinned skinned like on backpacker. Over there you could complain to a moderator if you got your feelings hurt. Backpacker was The Beatles and TT was the Rolling Stones. Different styles for different people. Some people used both sites. I did, but over time I migrated fully to TT.

In my opinion, TT didn’’t go down hill because of lack of moderation or because it became more intimidating to join. It went down hill because the members stopped treating newbies like Trolls and accepted them into the group without them ever being vetted by hiking with other members. By fighting, debating, arguing, whatever with known trolls those trolls were effectively made members of the group. In my opinion, if someone can’’t be bothered to hike occasionally with other members of TT they should be ignored by those of us that do find that time, even if it is not as often as others get to hike.

So be careful not to turn this place into Backpacker.com. If you do, then what would be the incentive to come here rather than there.

Ken used the word "jazzed." That in itself is not a good sign.

Ken, TT has always loved its trolls especially ones that pretend to be site managers. As a sign of good faith, could you fix the contact email at the bottom of all these pages so that elise is no longer the contact person? That would be a simple task for someone with the capability of naming forum moderators.

Also, I would like to be considered for the position of volunteer moderator. If you could please fix that contact link I will send you an email with my official request.

I have 12 hours of experience as a moderator on TT.

Rosey, what have I done that would lead you to believe that I would not be fair in moderation? If having different political and moral beliefs than someone else disqualifies someone then no one can moderate.

I suggested hyway because he is consistant, he has logical reasons for the beliefs he expresses, he has a self deprating sense of humor, and he is just an all around fun guy. PITA(pain in ...) folks that are OCD would suck as mods.

How about everyone self-moderate? That way we will all be our own moderators, there will never be any disagreements with ourselves, and you know who to complain to for prompt action.

I can answer that. How about accusing me of busting on special needs kids and then harping on me for 2 years afterwards when in fact all I did is blame irresponsible parents of those children who dont respect others. Did you ever admit you were unfair and misrepresenting what I said?

I was fair and I was correct. I don't plan to rehash it or offer an apology. I don't currently have HPD on ignore because you have shown an impressive restraint with this rebirth and haven't shown the inclination to want to fight it out to the bitter end. If you choose this moment to change that then you will soon find yourself arguing with yourself. I don't have any desire to rehash old wars.

I am not rehashing anything. Just pointing out why I think you have been unfair in the past, therefore, make a poor moderator. I clearly said NOTHING negative about the children, yet you insist that I did, and provide no evidence whatsoever. Never have. Never will. Just my 2 cents on something you asked about.

And for the record I forgive you. Does not mean that I trust you though.
