The Spay and Neuter Clinic told me to just let the "outside" cats be outside after I got my cat fixed. They said it was less stress on the cat.

My cat healed just fine.

I also got instructions to keep the outdoor cats somewhere cool and quiet (garage) after getting them fixed, too.

Our mosquitoes never went away this winter, despite a couple of dips down into the low 20's. We've stayed way above normal this winter.

Well, it happened.... The Mrs. was sitting on the garage steps with the big garage door open and not 30 feet away from the door a fox ran by, chasin my chickens. Then again and again and again. This thing's fearless. I got to countin my birds and I'm definitely down 4.
F*#¥K! Its been real rainy here so my dogs have been holed up inside. I guess the fox is smart enough to know when it's safe around here. We looked around up in the ridge where it kept goin and found a chicken
carcass. So now I got 3 hawks and a fox after my birds.

Of course you know this means war.....

Damn roosters are attacking me! bastards. I've found that whacking them in the chest is minimally effective, but whacking 'em upside the head works well. Makes me feel bad though...

Added 3 black giants and 3 more amber links on Thursday.

Fox update;
Well we got bored the other night... Ok we were drinking too, and I decided to make a fox trap out of a dog kennel cage thing I have. We made a sliding door, it's pretty legit. So far nothin but I like my chances.

Added chicks - 3 black giants, 3 tetra tint pullets, 3 red pullets, 2 bantams, 3 amber link pullets...2 chicks were eaten by cats.

Two of last years bantams are sitting on eggs - hope they hatch, should be interesting to see what we get.

We added 6 recently: 2 partridge rocks, 2 egyptian fayoumi, and 2 jersey giants. Had I said that already?

Our big dawg has been missing for 2 weeks, and in that time we lost 8 guineas. He's back now, so no more missing guineas.

Twig, I've got a Batam sitter but she's so stupid she switches boxes sometimes and let's the eggs go cold. I was thinking maybe I have too many nesting boxes(14)
I've also got a Cherry egger that's on about 6 eggs, she never moves, 10 more days and I should get a chicks. I put a few extra ones under her. She has no idea.

mine are both sitting in the same place - one bunch should be hatching within a week if they are going to hatch at all.

What's a cherry egger? never hear of it.

I thought the Cayuga drake was always driving the Mallard we call Survivor away from the group, turns out he was actually trying to "catch" her.

Looks like the Mallard has left us for the bog down the road - and a handsome drake. She looked happy. :)
At least, that's what I want to believe, cause if that wasn't her swimming in the bog, then she was the latest victim of whatever predator is skulking around.

Build a trap Twig, it's easy

The feed store has some Peken ducks chicks for $5.95. Were thinking about buying one for a holiday feast. Anybody know if they're easy to take care of?

I bet all I would catch is a dog.

Looks like one of the Cayugas is gone - saw the neighbors dog up here as well, chasing my cats.

We had Pekins, and if you mean are they easy to prepare for a feast, I'd recommend sooting them in the head. I read that you can hang them like chickens but NOT.

took a little walk out to the chicken coop last night just in time to see the skunk eating the eggs...

I seem to have less chickens every day - I'm going to get the other coop ready and close the doors on the one they are in - the one the damn skunk lives under, and hope my new birds do better.

It's my facebook profile picture now.

First trip to NYC and we were in Macy's, discovered they had a fur salon, so had to check it out. Very nice people, chatted with us and let us try on anything...went back the next year and they posed my granddaughter in a fur coat, was pretty cool for her.

No eggs again today, damn skunk! But I [really] miscounted the other night and still have around 24 birds. Wish the broody hen would actually hatch something.

Apparently I collected eggs and got one that at one time had been under the broody hen - I think this was before I put her and her eggs in a box and they were all over the place. Anyway, I boiled eggs the other night, and first egg I crack open has a chick in it. For about 2 seconds I thought of a show of the Food channel that I watched where the guy tried fetal chicken eggs, then threw it outside for the skunk.

From now on, broody hens and their eggs are going in bird cages.

My broody one's at day 16 on this batch of eggs. I guess it won't be long... I hope to finish my homemade incubator this weekend. I got my egg turner. The only thing I don't have is a hygrometer. Is that a big deal?
Stratd00d

You don't need it Strat. You don't need that egg-turner too. Mine pooped out after a couple of uses. It will turn fine empty, but put eggs in it and it won't slowly turn them. So instead of blowing another 25 bux, I just do roll them over every morning and every evening, pencil an X on one side so you can tell if you've rolled them. My hatching is about as good doing that myself. The grandest trick to an incubator is having that fan. A fan is a must have, and a thermometer to track the temp.

We had one broody hen, some dang sickness I've picked up took out about a quarter of our gals (including her), looks like it's on the downside now, only one bad off gal now, if I make it to Asheville there's a vet that'll do up your chicken for 15 bux, then I'll at least know what I'm dealing with. LOL, izat 1 sentence?

I might hafta get a couple of game hens to do our sittin'.

I have a buddy w game hens and they just wander off in the woods and show up 3 weeks later with a batch of chicks. I guess they got game!
Too late on the turner, I done pulled the trigger
